    WOW!!!

Quite a bit of excitement from one little verse in Daniel!

OK, first of all, let me say that I am not opposed to what Bob is saying to the degree that it might seem. This is a very esoteric point, but it is heartfelt on my part. I take it as very important to keep one's word as much as one can. I feel it even more important for one in authority, for without that all authority falls. That may be a very worldly view to many of you, but to me it is scripturally supported.

I look at the Proverbs and what is said about rulers, pledges and honesty versus not keeping one's word as well as the wisdom in taking oaths. I see the decree from Darius in this light. That is probably the primary difference between my point of view and Bob's if I am understanding him right. I do not see Darius as having freedom to change his decree, as much as he might like to.

If Darius has total freedom, Bob is certainly right. If not, Daniel might be righteous for breaking the decree while Darius is righteous for keeping it despite his desire to the contrary.

    Be Blessed,

    A thought as an illustration:

A father has a young teenage daughter and they lve in a dangerous neighborhood. SHe feels threatened and expresses her concern to her father. He feels her fear and tells her he will protect her, even if he has to kill to do it!

Unwise? Oh, yes! Possible? I think very much so.

Later, maybe in months or years to come, she gets pregnant and it is likely that carrying the child to term would kill her, or at least that is what the doctors believe. She is afraid and wants an abortion. She cannot get it without him signing the papers. What does he do?

Yes, abortion is wrong, and you should have faith that if it is God's will, this will all work out with no harm coming to the girl. But is it God's will, or is this one of those times where the consequences of our actions will be against us?

Ask yourself, should he keep his word, foolish as it was, or should he break it and not participate in killing an innocent unborn child? I ask you not to debate this example, but to ponder this on your own heart. If you have a better example, I encourage you to share it.

My view is sin is sin is sin. Barring the potential for consequences in this world, they are all the same in the eyes of the Lord. The smallest failing is as bad as the largest and God opposes lies as he opposes murder, so breaking ones' word is a sin, pure and simple.

Contreversial, I am sure, for we are trained to think of them as big and little sins. Is that the way God sees them? That is the real question I am trying to ask, and is the one you should respond to.

    In Christ,

    Mel
