I think this verse bothered me for a while, being a mother myself. Mary was strong in faith and truly blessed by God in order to have to "share" her child with every mother, and his brothers with every brother and sister. I can't imagine it was easy for her, wanting to see her child but knowing that, He had a much greater gift for this world to share before His time on earth was done.

I wonder, many times if I could have been that strong.

    God Bless,
    Kelly

A point that perhaps Jesus was trying to show us that we are all family and need to treat each other just as we would our own mother, brother, sister. But I still struggle with these verses. Can anyone cast more light on the issue for me?

    Thank you

If any [man] come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
    Luk 14:26)
In the above passage as well as in the one that Marsha has cited, Jesus refers to natural family members which represent all natural relationship we have in this world. Naturally they hold a very powerful place in our heart and affections. But these must be denied (not that they are bad in themselves)in order to achieve a place in His Father's kingdom.
Then we find new relationships in the spiritual realm, new brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters. I have one natural daughter (who is a Christian) but, hopefully I have many other daughters and sons in the church. My natural sisters are not sisters in Christ. Two different areas of relationship, and one must be denied in order to possess the other.
