At the start of vs.8 "the cowardly" is an interesting inclusion. I wonder if that is a good translation?

    Worthy of research, I'd say.

Hi, Mel and Jon. Have you ever used the Amplified Bible for research or study? Because our English doesn't always capture the full meaning of a word in the original language, the Amplified Bible was compiled and published in order to give us a more comprehensive understanding of the biblical text. There are three primary ways this is done:
    1. The full meaning of the word is simply inserted into the passage, when that meaning is clear and a single English word doesn't capture the full concept.
    2. Parentheses ()are used to include additional meanings of a word, phrase or clause where more than one meaning was in use for the original.
    3. Brackets [] are used when there's a justified word or comment that will clarify the concept but that isn't included in the original text. Brackets also are used to insert definitions of Hebrew and Greek names and to reference other verses of the Bible.

Also, conjunctions are italicized to show where additional English meanings for a word have been inserted or where meanings not stated in the original language, but nevertheless implied by it, have been included. (Since I can't italicize here, I'll use quote marks to indicate italicized conjunctions in the verse below.)

I say all of this because the Amplified Bible has the following rendering of Rev. 21:8 (you'll notice that there aren't any parentheses or brackets in the part Jon commented on):

But as for the cowards "and" the ignoble "and" the contemptible "and" the cravenly lacking in courage "and" the cowardly submissive, and as for the unbelieving and faithless, and as for the depraved and defiled with abominations, and as for murderers and the lewd "and" adulterous and the practicers of magic arts and the idolaters (those who give supreme devotion to anyone or anything other than God) and all liars (those who knowingly convey untruth by word or deed) - [all of these shall have] their part in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone. This is the second death. [Isa. 30:33.]"

What a mouthful! The single word "cowardly" is shown here (will all of its English definitions inserted) as "the cowards "and" the ignoble "and" the contemptible "and" the cravenly lacking in courage "and" the cowardly submissive."

In the KJV Bible, the word used isn't even "cowardly;" it's "fearful." It's the Greek word "deilos" (di-los), Strong's Concordance word 1169 in the Greek Dictionary of the New Testament. It comes from the word "deos," meaning "dread," and it's translated/defined as meaning "timid, i.e. (by implication) faithless: - fearful." Notice that being timid about our faith is seen by implication as being faithless and therefore fearful, or cowardly. What an admonition that is!

May we never be timid-faithless-fearful-cowardly in our role as ambassadors for Christ in this fallen world. Jesus said that if we were ashamed of the Gospel before men, he would be ashamed of us before God the Father. God forbid; may it never be so.

Thanks for a research-provoking post, Mel! I had fun exercising my spiritual and cranial muscles on this one!
