Can I still worry about next week? (The wedding is Saturday and my, "i'm sure everyone is sick of hearing about it," sermon is Sunday)

I guess not, since worry is the opposite of trust and hope.

Read the Lords prayer, there Jon, we are not to worry, but yet we are asking for so much. Other scriptures tell us to cast our anxieties on the Lord, but how can that be, except that we have anxieties to cast? I'd say that to worry is to dwell unconstructively upon it. We all have things that make us anxious, but as we become aware of them, what are we supposed to do with those worries?

    Dwell in His Peace,

Mel, I'd say you have the right idea in both your post to Lee and your answer to Jon.

As for the whole biblical numerology/Bible Code issue, I've read a book or two about the symbolic meanings of numbers in the Bible, and thus far I haven't found anything in scripture to contradict what I read. However, I don't look for some hidden code in the Bible's numbers; I figure if the passage about the disciples catching 153 fish is in there, it means God wanted the disciples to make an exact count of their catch on that particular occasion. Why? I don't know, and I don't care. It mattered to them how many fish they caught without their net breaking; it doesn't matter to me.

As for the Bible Code book by Drosnin, I read it years ago. I found it interesting reading, but I don't keep up with that stuff and expect exact prophecies about current and future events to be found there. If it's there, that's no surprise, because the God who created the universe and everything in it in six days can certainly encode the events of that universe into His written Word to us, if He so chooses. However, I see actively looking for it as akin to divination; it takes our focus off of the God who will make a way for us through all things, and causes us to focus instead on the things themselves. I think that God has already revealed to us what we need to know in the Bible's text as we read it, not as we would "decode" it with some algorithm.

As for your response to Jon, we are told both not to worry and also to cast our cares upon the Lord, for He cares for us. God knew that we would encounter things, people and situations that would cause us to worry. As you said, though, the crux of the matter is this: what do we do with those worries? If we are to follow God's Word, we will acknowledge that we can't control the situation, the other person's actions, or even our own in many cases, and we will leave the burden of that worry in God's hands.

This goes not only for worry, but also for anger or any other destructive emotional response to a situation.

Quick example: At work the other day, I was about two minutes from flying into a rage over the petty annoyances of the day. As I stalked down the hall back to my office, I said aloud (no one was there at the time, thank goodness!), "Lord, I know I shouldn't be feeling and acting this way, and I'm glad no one is around to receive the brunt of it right now. But frankly, I have no control over the way I'm feeling, and I can't do a cotton-pickin' thing about it. So if You don't want me biting anyone's head off, You'll have to take this away from me, 'cause I can't handle it myself."

As I admitted that to myself and the Lord, I almost immediately felt calmer, much to my relief. By acknowledging that I couldn't control my emotions and reactions to the things that were bothering me, I had put the whole matter in God's hands. He immediately dissolved my anger - which had been driven by menopausal hormone havoc as well as incessant phone calls from the boss and people looking for the boss - and my day got a lot better really fast.

Sorry if I'm babbling; seems like today is blog catch-up day for me.

    God bless y'all!

Presumably the number of fish caught would be the number for sale in the market!! simple stocktaking. Jesus had already caught the fish for breakfast v 9 of Jn 21
Thats how I see it. Traci glad your day improved after communication whith Our God.
