Great post on truth. I like what A W Tozer said about truth. -- The unattended garden will soon be overrun with weeds; the heart that fails to cultivate truth and root out error will shortly be a theological wilderness.

    Ross,

I don't know about your statement about every sin begining with a lie. Maybe so! However, I am of the opinion the easiest way to determine if something is sin or not is whether or not we have something inside us that wants us to lie about it. If something says to us speak up about a subject, that conversely does not make it the Truth! Gossip is my example there. James talks about the one taming the tongue being capable of hold the rest of his body in check. Something to think about!

Romans talks about how the Law makes sin manifest. If you do something wrong, but have no concept that what you did was wrong, did you commit a crime? Can you sin without knowing it? A rhetorical question that can lead to much debate. However, if you had no intention of doing wrong, you are less likely to lie about what you did. I think that there points to what the nature of sin is and when it demands punishment or sacrifice to make amends. It does not make it right or wrong. It makes it sin with the additional requirements. Don't be crazy here. Paul also talks about people having no excuse for not realizing who God is simply because of all creation pointing to him.

Does that make a person who does horrible things and then speaks freely about them blameless? No. That person might very well be commiting the unforgivable by denying that voice (the Spirit inside us) that helps us to discern the truth about what is right and what is wrong. I say this with trepidation. Am I right in this? I am not sure enough to teach it, I am afraid. But I speak it here in the Spirit of your current post. So I may be wrong, and hold nothing against one who would seek to correct my thinking on this...

The strange thing to think about is what the fruit of the "Tree of Life" was supposed to give us. Hmmm. Sounds good to me on the surface of it, but as you said, Satan lies. It was not meant for us. Then the Spirit of God gives us similar discernement, but not the same. How is that? What is different?

    Hmmmm.

The Truth can be brutal at times. But there is usually a way to say it that is better than another. But the Truth still has to be there. I also think that speaking the Truth of the Word is in its entirety what we are intended to do. Making disciples of all of the world flows from that. The 'Great Commission' is not a task, it is an automatic outflow that comes from constantly speaking the Truth.

I am still not there to the degree that God would have me be. Pray for me in this!

    In Christ,

    Mel

Hey thanks all for your comments. Mel let me clarify a little my take that every sin might be traced back to a lie, not meaning the person tells a lie but that the person bought and took hold of a lie from the father of lies. You take a look at people the way they can reason doing something they know is not right, but convince themselves it might be ok this one time, after all who is it really going to hurt. then maybe next time it is easier. How many marriages have been destroyed because of maybe one simple little affair that really didn't mean anything? How many people have been killed because one more drink won't hurt anybody. How many souls have been lost because a loving God surely wouldn't send a person who tries to be good most of the time. I'm not trying to say lying about something we did or didn't do is the cause of sin I'm simply saying most of our sins derive from the fact we accept one or more of satans lies. Hope that makes more sense
    God bless

That is clearer, yes, and something I think I agree with. I am not sure it is always the case that a lie is behind the sin, but it is plausible to me at least that it could be. I will think on this now and again I am sure. Eventually, I may be blessed with an insight.

    I Christ,
