It may look and sound a little like Mohammed's harsh laws, but there is a difference.
1. If we today, took heed of this admonition to completely obliterate our enemies in the land of promise, that is those hidden and secret sins that would plague and dog us, we would be free to enjoy all of the benefits we are given in this land of (spiritual) promise now.
2. As far as avenging murder and other crime. Swift and sure punishment, though not a total protection, is nevertheless a strong deterrent to it. I know, having been in the judicial/penal system.
3. Give a man a fair chance to fight, without ganging up on him by your friends and loved ones.

I never question what God does, even tho by todays standerds it some times seemed harsh , But God has a reason for everything.
