I hear an echo, of masters and freedom. So many people in this world are mastered by things and they choose to call it freedom to perform those things. Their understanding is very dim. They have no freedom at all, and have sold themselves into slavery!

Mel,
It could be that they are oblivious to being chained. Their shackles could be very similar to that of the trained elephant's bondage. A tiny rope tied to one of its hind legs and attached to a small post is sufficient to keep it from roaming off. It has decided in its mind that it can't escape so why bother.
