I admit that I was a bit offended the first time I heard this song, but reading the lyrics, I realize that there are several ways you could take her song. Is she singing from the point of view of a nonbeliever, a seeker, or a believer confronting an unbeliever?

It's still not my favorite song in the world, but for a song "in the world," it's not too bad. I much prefer what I hear on my local Christian station, but this song isn't as bad as one might think if one didn't know the lyrics and couldn't hear them clearly. It's a thought-provoker, and that's probably why it offends some.

Its important to point out that this is not from a Christian artist. For a secular song it has some insight.

    Traci,

My point in posting this was that you don't have to agree with my view that "Imagine" is offensive. I don't find this one particularly offensive, but find it somewhat stretching my thought process. You don't have to like this one. I won't be offended by your tastes in this matter. I am not particularly fond of this song, it was just one I had an anecdotal [sp] angle to use. It was the only reason that I consciously made the choice to use it.

    Jon,

You are right, and to some, that may make a big difference. It is probably wise to point this out. Amy Grant, maybe depending upon what part of her life you are talking about, is considered one or the other by different people. If you look at my poetry, there are aspects of the world and my faith that bleeds through even where I have no intention one way or the other. As for the unsaid assumption that songs from a Christian Artist are going to be somehow more meaningful or deeper, I will accept that as a generalization. We start messing with the freedom issue here. I would say it is wise to listen to music where you are more sure the content is going to be edifying and uplifting. Make it a cerimonial [sp] hand washing type of thing, and you probably know full well what my reaction will be...

    Brothers and Sisters: Be blessed.

    In Christ,

Mel, your response made me realize that I didn't mention the song "Imagine" at all in my comment on that posting! Just goes to show how easily we go off on side trails.

For the record, I don't like the song "Imagine" either; it offends my beliefs at the very core of my being. Now, Mercy Me's "I Can Only Imagine," on the other hand (Lois mentioned it in her comment), is wonderful and brings me to tears whenever I hear it and contemplate the moment in eternity when I will be before Jesus.

As for the song in this post, it's okay and it does make you think, if you actually know what the lyrics say. Thanks for posting them, Mel; I didn't know it before simply because Alanis doesn't always enunciate when she sings.

And I sing all sorts of weird keys, if I am on key at all!!! LOL!
