Hi Mel!
You are right. Jesus showed them, and us, that to serve others is to lead by example in the Christian life. Christian leadership is totally opposite of the world's version. If Jesus was refused the opportunity to clean his feet then there would be some question as to how much trust he had in Christ? Any other thoughts on this?
