Through history these two witnesses have probably most often been interpreted as the Old and new testaments. It seems a little forced to me. They are described in very human terms. The testaments powers seems like they would be more like convicting and enlightening.
More often recently, they have been interpreted as Elijah and Moses. (Sometimes Enoch because it is said that he didn't die) They uses the powers decribed here in their ministries. They appeared on the Mount of Transfiguration. Elijah rode into Heaven. And there is an intriguing verse in Jude about Michael contending for the body of Moses.
(sorry, Revelation was an old hobby of mine)
