I believe the reason is that the Christians of today do not believe in God but in Mama god - in Mammon. To Mammon an independent soul is dangerous. The congregation, the church, is supposed to be a brotherhood. A brotherhood is frightening to those believing in Mama god, who wants everyone to be safe and sorry in the warm regime of her - of Mammon.
