I think what you are talking about is leadership. Not being in charge, but leading! Jesus says, I know my sheep, my sheep know my voice. He is the good shepherd. Jn. 10:1ff
That is our task as leaders in the church, not to Lord it over people, but to serve. See also 1 Peter 5:2ff
Hope this helps Mel, in your family situation, everyone deserves respect, even little children, Paul in Eph. 5 reminds us all the way forward for Parents, Children & their relationships with each other & Christ. If only we all followed the way of Christ, there would be a lot less domestic violence in the world. Thank you for reminding us all of our responsibilities to each other & to Christ.
Love in His Name Stuart

I think you are right there Stuart. I see what I was trying to say in the light of humility. We are proud by our very fleshly nature. At least I am. 1 Peter 5:1-6 or so is talking along those lines with the imagery of the Good Shepherd that was the topic of your reference in John 10.
And Ephesians 5:1 and the first several verses of chapter 6 point in the direction I am seeing this going. I am sure there is more, and will look for it.
In Thanks,
Mel
