    Ah Mel,
Like this post today! I have always hated math because I never understood it, and I can't remember ever hearing the word "axiom"...but now I know what it is, and thank you! Wish you had been my teacher so many moons ago... but hey, you are my teacher now and I'm not too old to learn! I could probably learn to enjoy math even. :-)
    God bless you!

Hi, Mel! This reminds me of an argument I had with my dad a few years ago about faith vs. fact and absolute truth vs. relativism. I stumped him with a simple math question (he used to be a math teacher, so I knew he'd either get defensive or actually think about what I was trying to point out). I asked him WHY 2+2=4. Of course, he said it just does, but then I took it further and asked who decided what 2 meant and what 4 meant and who decided that 2 sets of 2s equal a 4. "If everything is relative, who's to say that 2+2 doesn't equal 5 or 17 or some other number?" Of course he didn't have a solid answer that would allow him to justify the relativist position he'd taken and still explain why 2+2 had to equal 4, so he got defensive and changed the subject.

Regardless of what we take to be true, there's a level of faith involved. That's what some scientists and mathematicians refuse to acknowledge because it would upset them to accept that their "facts" are every bit as faith-based as our reality is. Truth to tell, many of the basic facts of math and science were established by Bible-believing Christians (of course, this doesn't include the theory of evolution, which has been propagated by people who are afraid of what God will say when they finally have to face Him).

Anyway, thanks for another interesting post, Mel!

Well Sharon, many years ago, I probably would have had a terrible attitude. One thinkg I have learned over the years is that if you really want to know something, prepare to teach on it. You will ask questions you might not otherwise. Thanks!

Lois, I think along this line a fair amount. It has its merits, but like anything, too much wearies the body... Enjoy yourself, and thanks as well.

Traci. It seems you have first hand experience in knowing how stubborn a person can be facing this challenge. Don't worry, it is not for us to "win" an arguement. Rather it is for us to "plant" a seed that could grow. I am glad you use the qualifier "some" when speaking of mathimaticians and scientists. Some are aware of what I allude to here: Everything, even that which seems concrete, is indeed, just FAITH! I hope this doesn't work anyone up too much...

    In Christ,

    Mel
