And there are times that when asked, the Veteran will reply in perfect honesty, "I was just doing my duty." The medal is not denigrated by that fact, nor is the pain diminshed. Sometimes, we just need to be true to "Our Duty" and honor what was done on our behalf. I am deliberate in the double meanings. I think they are both/all true.
