John,
One of our most esteemed and noble statesmen, Ben Franklin, was not what you would call an adherant to this philosphy that this is a "Christian" Nation. He sought freedom from relgious persectution and this is corrrectly pointed out by many on the left of this matter. These are the people who now currently seek to make Atheism the Official Religion of this Country. They want "Science" (as they see it, not how you or I see it) to be the ONLY God. Unfortunately for them, "Science" is not what they make it to be. They bastardize it, each to their own liking, and refuse to acknowledge their own hypocrisy.
I want to bring an article to light. If you truely understood what Franklin was about, you would understand further exactly what even he, as "unrelgious" as he was, meant by Freedom of Religion. I find it amusing to note that "scientific" people are the most afraid to Quote the First Amendment. Instead, they will speak the "Seperation of Church and State" line that is their only Mantra, and an inaccurate one at that.
The link, (and there are many more good ones like this if you are not afraid to seek the truth) is:

Well, I think you and I are on the same page, and dear old Ben is not as far from us "dirty christians" as most historical revisionists would have everyone be taught.
Keep Speaking Truth,
