Interesting passage. Looking at just it, makes me ask a couple of questions. Did Joab sin because he didn't completely submit to King David's orders even tho King David's orders were wrong?
The reason I ask, is thinking about a situation when a senior pastor asked an assistant pastor to resign and the assistant pastor refused. I was told by a 3rd pastor that the assistant pastor was wrong because he didn't submit to the authority of the senior pastor. Thoughts?

Depends. I would say that if there was not a compelling reason for the assistant pastor to refuse, he did not submit, and in that he was wrong. But, just with the information given here, I could not begin to fathom the reasons.
What I can say is this: Talk along these lines can also become damaging in and of itself. In what context did the third pastor share this to you? If it was in casual conversation as in social small talk, I think there is another aspect to consider scripturally. Thoughts are many, and the heart is deceitful, but God knows a heart that is truly seeking him. Thoughts. Hmmm...
Still Thinking,
