I don't know if those little girls would have wanted their parents to forgive him so quickly. If society would take care of these problems like the Bible instructs us to we wouldn't have so many of this type of people out there hurting innocent people. Forgiveness is one thing but letting evil run rampant and just saying it's okay, we forgive you...wouldn't that almost encourage this type of behaviour? It's important not to carry around bitterness for sure, but it's equally important to protect society against this type of thing as well.

    Just my 2 cents,

Forgiveness is not the same as not having consequences. When you punish your child, do you loose the ability to forgive them? Certainly it can mean forgoing any claim of renumeration or compensation. And it does mean forgoing retribution. But personal forgiveness is not something that ties the hands of the ruler who bears the sword. He (or she) can pardon a person, but the law of consequences is still there and it is their duty to enforce that, tempered with mercy where it is clearly appropriate.

    My 2 cents,

Jesus' example is inLuke 23:34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Mel said it already. Offering someone God's forgiveness is hardly letting evil run rampant and just saying it's okay.

That's my point exactly. Thanks for the clarification Mel. Sometimes it's hard to come up with just the right words to express what I'm trying to say. Just because we forgive, that doesn't mean that we should let these people run free.

I am also concerned that people focus too much on forgiving the perpetrator rather than on protecting the innocent. Though the Amish set an exemplary example of forgiveness, this country simply is not tough enough on these types of criminals. We would not have so much to forgive if these crimes were properly dealt with.

It's hard to convey tone in a written post. I am not angry, but I am concerned that people will feel compelled to blindly forgive everyone for everything and let it go at that.

Jesus did ask God to forgive them because they didn't know what they were doing. God is not a liar. If He said that they did'nt know, then they didn't. Some people do not know what they are doing...some people do. I think a distinction should be made there as well. We are accountable for what we know. I think this man clearly knew that what he was doing was wrong.

I also think it is important to note that we need to repent to receive God's forgiveness. If God just willy-nilly forgave everyone for everything as soon as it happened, everyone would be going to Heaven.

It is important to forgive people in the sense that we do not carry around debilitating emotions. We cannot live in bitterness because of what others have done to us and we do not have to. The fact that the Amish so quickly forgave shows some degree of maturity in realizing that God is in control of everything and we may not know all the answers, but we know the One who does and can trust Him to make everything right in the end.

    Best Regards :),
