And an interesting side note is to realize that from Pilate's standpoint, the first two charges were just a wee bit more serious. Yet he sees that they are obviouly trumped up charges, and just presses past, ignoring them, basically.
Pilate knew (or at the very least, had a good idea) just what was really up here. Christ was not a threat to Rome. He did pose some very thorny problems for those in the Jewish Shadow State, threatening their control over certain aspects of their (at least as they saw it) people's lives. I would consider that Pilate knew more about what was going on than casual reading might illuminate.
Get's you to thinking, doesn't it? I mean how many current leaders are well aware of what current religious thought is, and how often do they sidestep and elude the different people (good and bad) who try to manipulate them for their own ends?
Just a penny or two thought...
