My children. Just what does it take to 'exasperate' them? NAS uses 'provoke your children to anger' and New Life Version says 'do not be too hard on your children so they will become angry'.

The different translations seem to change the emphasis. What is the true message?

It's one of those life lessons, don't cause your children to look at you and what you stand for, assuming that is Christ to be viewed as a distastful thing . Don't bring them to a point where they say I don't want to be like you, don't be unreasonable and cause them to turn away from you and the Lord
I think what you are saying about the different emphasis is in interpretation on your behalf they pretty much all say the same thing exasperate-to enrage or to cause irritation or annoyance, so it's all in the translation

A literal interpretation of the word would be that we exasperate them by not training them at all. Don't exasperate them, train them. Parents in America get comfortable in the "christian country" and assume that they would grow up christian. They send them to church instead of take them. I think it implies active teaching, the ultimate being living the example.

I think that what Jon and I are saying is pretty much the same thing just different wording and thus we have different versions of the Bible which for the most part say the same thing
    Be blessed

How important parenting has become in today's world. No longer can we here in South africa send our children to school (unless it is a christian) thinking that they will learn about God. When we were kids, our school assembled everyday to say the Lord's prayer before class - no longer. We used to have a compulsory subjuect "Religous Instruction" (unless you were Jewish or Muslim) but no longer. The only place where kids learn about God is at home and at church, but if the parents don't go to church, where do they learn? No where. Scary to see how satan has managed to down play the importance of God by simply removing anything godly from the schools. If our generation of children grow up not hearing about God, the chances are that their children hear even less and their grandchildren would never even know there was a God. How devious is satn?
