O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. Psalm 139:1-4

    Does Evil Exist?

One day a professor of a university decided to defy his pupils. He asked, "Did God create everything that exists?"

A student answered bravely, "Yes, He did."

    "Everything?" asked the teacher.

"Yes, everything," was the answer of the student.

"In that case, God also created evil, correct? Because evil exists," said the teacher.

To that, the student had no answer and remained in silence. The teacher was delighted at the opportunity to prove one more time that faith was only a myth.

Suddenly, another student raised his hand and asked, "May I ask you a question, professor?"

    "Of course," was the answer.

    "Does cold exist?"

"Of course," answered the professor. "Have you never felt cold?"

"Actually, sir, cold does not exist. According to studies in physics cold is the total and complete absence of heat. An object can only be studied if it has, and transmits, energy. And it is the heat of an object that transmits its energy. Without heat, the objects are inert, incapable to react. Cold does not exist. We created the term, cold, to explain the lack of heat."

The student then asked, "And darkness? Does darkness exist?"

    "It exists," replied the teacher.

"Again, you're wrong, sir. Darkness is the total absence of light. You can study light and brightness, but not darkness. The Prism of Nichols shows the variety of different colors in which light can be decomposed according to the longitude of the waves. Darkness is the term we created to explain the total absence of light."

And finally, the student asked, "And evil, sir. Does evil exist? God did not create evil. Evil is the absence of God in people's hearts, it is the absence of love, humanity, and faith. Love and faith are like heat and light. They exist. Their absence leads to evil."

Now it was the professor's turn to remain silent. . .

The name of the student was: Albert Einstein.

Let go of the life behind you, and reach forth with the guidance of the Lord

    Philippians 3:13 (King James Version)

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

    Prayer

    James 5:17

Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

Praying lightly throws contempt upon God's name and authority. In the midst of a storm in life nothing is more seasonable than prayer. We are then most humble, and the heart is broken and tender. It is necessary to exercise faith and hope under affliction, and prayer is the appointed means for obtaining and increasing these graces. In a time of turmoil it is not cold and formal prayer that is effectual, but the prayer of faith. The power of prayer is proven by the history of Elijah. In prayer we must not look to the merit of man, but to the grace of God. It is not enough to simply say a prayer. Thoughts ought to be fixed. Our desires need to be firm and ardent. The very power of prayer should encourage every Christian to be earnest in prayer.

Prayer for those in the crossfire

I spent most of my day yesterday behind the wheel of a big rig transporting equipment between Orange County, San Bernardino County, and Riverside County in Southern California. When days like this come up where I spend most of my day driving, it enables me to spend a lot of time listening to the radio. I was shocked at the events developing at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

A gunman went on a rampage, reportedly killing 32 plus himself, and injuring twenty plus, in the most horrific and worst mass killing in the history of the United States. This campus shooting began, authorities believe, with a killing of two in a dormatory, and then two hours later, equipped with a 9mm and .22 caliber weapon, and a jacket of clips, the gunman went from class to class at Norris Hall killing at will.

On Michelle Malkin's site, an e-mail from a student at Virginia Tech that had been trapped in one of the classrooms, baracaded as the shooter fires shots through the door they blocked only seconds before, gives a chilling first-hand account of the events.

I have no opinion on yesterday's events other than that they are chilling, and that thoughts of my wife who goes to a local university in pursuit of her bachelors degree, and my children who are roughly the same age as the students at Virginia Tech, came to mind. My prayers go out to those slain, to the parents of those gunned down, and to the students who survived, but will be affected by this for the rest of their lives.

Pray with me for their healing.

    Micah 2:1

Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

Woe to people that plan evil things, carrying out their lives simply to carry their evilness into execution! It is not right to do wrong things on a whim, but it is much worse to do it with design and forethought. When we give in to the world's desires and offerings, covetousness inhabits the heart, and compassion is banished. When the heart falls under the enemy's influence, violence and fraud commonly occupy one's activities. The best defense is to not turn away from God, but to put all into His caring hands. It is the world's desire to cut us off from the congregation of the Lord, or cut us short in the enjoyment of its privileges.

The LORD is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh him.

    Lamentations 3:25 KJV

The essence of this verse is to trust in the Lord. To wait on the Lord is wise. God is good to those who wait on Him. Waiting, though difficult, is the way through trials. This is advice from Jeremiah to Israel. Scripture tells us that the things that happened to Israel were for our example. How God dealt with them is how He will deal with us. How we should respond to Him is also the same. When faced with trial, we, too, should quietly wait on the Lord. The response to trials is to receive humbly at the hand of God that which He sends, remaining humble. Those who are under God's hand of affliction must realize from whom it comes, and trust Him who sent it. No matter the apparent source of a trial, it is the Lord’s doing. Romans 8:28 tells us that all things work together for good to those who love God, who are called according to His purpose. The most awful things that can come our way will in the end bring about glory to God, and growth in Him for us. The most obvious example of this is David who committed the sins of adultery and murder. But his predecessor to the throne was born of the same woman. God’s hand is always on His own. And His ways are always right regardless. These things being so, the believer is called to lean on and trust God. God's goal is not affliction or grief just for the fun of it. God is compassionate. He desires nothing but the best for those that are His. But, what is best is not always what we think is the best. God's view of things is so much longer than ours. When we come into affliction, God's mighty hand is upon us. To those in Jerusalem at the time this verse was written, the invasion by Babylon and destruction of the city, was a great trial. One can only imagine the fear, heartache, loss, and pain. Undoubtedly hunger and sleeplessness were part of the ordeal, too. But here Jeremiah makes it clear to those who know God that God's plan includes their ultimate good. This trial is not to their destruction. Hereby God will prove His faithfulness to them. They will know of His care. They will see that He is faithful. This affliction is not something that will end in their destruction.
So what is the way in trials? Lamentations 3:27-30 gives the answer; quietly wait on and trust in Him. The Israelites in Jerusalem, who were God's, had no choice in their affliction. It came upon them, and turned their world upside down. The only choice they had was to trust the Lord - and wait. We really have no other choice, either. So we are to look to Him in affliction. We are to humble ourselves under His hand. We are to lean on Him, and trust in Him. He does not afflict willingly, neither grieve. He will have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. And He will be faithful.

    He is Risen!

    Luke 24:1-6 Happy Easter

NOW upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen...
