    Webmaster in a Nutshell

    Webmaster in a Nutshell

First, there was HTML. Then along came JavaScript. Close on the heels of JavaScript came CSS and before you mastered that, along came XML. Behind every successful web page is an overworked and underappreciated webmaster with a big pile of books about various web technologies spilling out across their desk. That collection of books is a valuable resource for delving into the topics at depth (and at leisure). But when you need an answer fast, the dog-eared book you'll turn to again and again is the new third edition of Webmaster in a Nutshell. This concise and portable quick reference distills an immense amount of information on several languages and technologies into one compact reference book. This is one book that will pay for itself a thousand times over in time saved and increased productivity. Webmaster in a Nutshell puts a fast-paced introduction, detailed reference section, and quick reference guide to each technology all within easy reach. It's packed full of the genuinely useful information a webmaster needs daily, whatever the technology, including: HTMLCSSXML CGIJavaScriptHTTPPHPApacheThis thorough, clear, and accessible reference makes it easy to find the information you want about the technologies you use. You'll keep your other books on the shelf; you'll keep Webmaster in a Nutshell next to your keyboard.

    What is a domain name?

    What is a domain name?
A domain name is a Web address, such as godaddy.com, that is linked to an IP address (which represents a physical point on the Internet). When someone types a domain name into a Web browser, the requested Web page displays.

A domain name consists of a top-level and a second-level domain. A top-level domain (TLD) is the part of the domain name located to the right of the dot (godaddy.com). The most common top-level domains are .COM, .NET, and .ORG. Some other popular top-level domains are .BIZ, .INFO, .NAME and .WS. These TLDs have certain guidelines but are, for the most part, available to any registrant, anywhere in the world.

The part of the domain name located to the left of the dot — "godaddy," in this case — is called the second-level domain (SLD) name. The second-level domain name is the "readable" part of the address and refers to the organization or entity behind the Internet address. Second-level domain names must be registered with an Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)-accredited registrar.

    Hello! A few thoughts...

Well, perhaps you have started your list of keywords for a domain name.. maybe you gotten a little stuck?

Remember, we will want to name our website after a word that gets searched by Google. So, for my sweepstakes site for example has the word "winning" in it. People who enjoy entering contests (not gambling!) will in fact type in win or winning during a search...

Lets try to stay away from your main product or service. We don't want for example : blushables for sale.com  (what is a blushables?) Most people who are looking to purchase online for makeup will not put your product in a search bar unless they already know you. Instead they will put something like make up for darker skin, and so on...

    ok, here is another example:

lets say you are thinking of creating a new website about a verse that you love from the Bible.. How can we come up with a good domain name?

Well.. I personally love to read what Paul has to say. But if we type in Corinthians in Google, chances are my small website will not show up. But if my new domain is

     Corinthians . com

I may have much better luck of Google placing me on the list. :)

food for thought as you come up with your list of words.. Get stuck be sure to comment so I can help!

    What is a domain name?

A domain name is your website address. See, when you want a website you are given a number. The numbers mean nothing to us, but is tractable for computers, gov't and others. We get to name our numbers what ever we want, for our sake and for those seeking us out.

These names that we give our website needs to be easy to remember so that when a new friend stumbles upon us, they can remember who we are, and will come back another rainy day.

The .com, .net, .edu, .uk, .ca and that sort of thing tells where you are or what type of business you are.

Most people in the USA will use .com

.net is part of the world of networking with others and is also related to MSN/ Microsoft (to the best of my knowledge that is)

.edu is if you are an educational institution

.ca is if you are a Canadian

    .uk is England

There are even more but chances are you will use .com, .ca or .uk

Next time I write I will show you how to register, and how to make sure you are getting what you need and at a low price or even free depending on your needs and type of website you are creating.

Oh and by the way.. I posted a free Bible offer on my website that some of you may be interested in. There is a website that is giving out Free Bibles to anyone who asks.. KJ and American Standard. There is no catch, just a wonderful group of people who are sharing The Word of God ...
