    SAUL’S ATTEMPT TO KILL DAVID

Because of Saul’s jealousy for David, he told his son Jonathan and all his attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very fond of David and warned him, My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there (1 Samuel 19: 2).

Jonathan promised David that he would go out in the field with his father where David was and would speak with him about David. Whatever he found out from his father, he promised to share with David.

Jonathan spoke well about David to his father. He said, Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason (1 Samuel 19: 4-5).

Saul promised Jonathan that he would not put David to death and Jonathan shared this information with David. However, one day when an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul he attempted to kill David. While David was playing the harp, Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape (1 Samuel 19: 9-10).

WHY DID SAUL SEEK ADVICE FROM SAMUEL AFTER SAMUEL’S DEATH?

When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid. He sought advice from the Lord but God did not answer him. So Saul asked his attendants to find him a woman who was a medium so that he could inquire of her. His attendants told him that there was one in Endor. Saul disguised himself and went with two of his men during the night.

After some hesitation, the medium said to Saul, Whom shall I bring up for you (1 Samuel 28: 11)? Saul requested Samuel. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, ‘Why have you deceived me? You are Saul (1 Samuel 28: 12)!

Samuel said to Saul, ‘Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up (1 Samuel 28: 15). Saul explained to Samuel that he was in great anguish because the Philistines were fighting against him and he was not receiving answers from God. As a result, he wanted advice from him.

Samuel said to Saul, Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today. The Lord will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also hand over the army of Israel to the Philistines (1 Samuel 28: 18-19).

    ISRAEL’S FIRST KING

The people of Israel refused to listen to Samuel and demanded a king. ‘No!’ they said. We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles (1 Samuel 8: 19-20).

Samuel spoke to the Lord about what the people had demanded. God said, Listen to them and give them a king (1 Samuel 8: 22).

One day as Saul was out with a servant looking for his father’s donkeys, the servant directed him to Samuel. When Samuel saw Saul the Lord said to him, This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people (1 Samuel 9: 17).

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, ‘Has not the Lord anointed you leader over his inheritance’ (1 Samuel 10: 1).

Saul was an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the others (1 Samuel 9: 2).

WHAT LED TO DAVID SPARING SAUL’S LIFE?

After Saul returned from going after the Philistines, he was informed that David was in the Desert of En Gedi. As a result, Saul took three thousand men and set out to look for David and his men.

As they were going, Saul went into a cave to relieve himself. But David and his men were hiding in the cave. David’s men said to him, 'This is the very day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish’ (1 Samuel 24: 4).

David crept up unnoticed and cut off a piece of Saul’s coat. After he had done it he was sorry.  He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord’ (1 Samuel 24: 6).

David did not allow his men to attack Saul. So Saul left the cave and went away.

    HIS GLORIOUS RESURRECTION

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification (Rom. 4: 25).

    QUESTIONS FOR SKEPTICS

    1) Why did the majority of Jesus' disciples suffer martyrdom if they were not certain that he rose from the dead and ascended into heaven (Acts 1: 1-8)?

    2) Why did Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee, a Rabbi, a scholar, an expert in the Old Testament Law, a blasphemer and a persecutor of Christians become the best known witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the most prolific author of New Testament books, if he was not absolutely certain that the vision he had on his way to Damascus was from the risen Christ who had ascended into heaven (Acts 22: 1-21)?

    3) If Jesus did not rise from the dead and if he did not possess a spiritual body, how was he able to appear to his disciples and to disappear from their presence (Mark 16: 9, 14; Luke 24: 36-39; John 20: 24-29; John 21: 1-14).

    4) If Jesus did not rise from the dead and if he did not receive a spiritual body, how was he able to defy the law of gravity by ascending into heaven (Luke 24: 50-53: Acts 1:9-11)?

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

PROOF THAT JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD

    PARTS 5 and 6

    5) THE TESTIMONY OF THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor (the Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you (John 16:7).

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them (Acts 2:1-4).

    6) THE TESTIMONY OF THE SCRIPTURES (PROPHECY)

    a) He (JESUS) must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets (Acts 3:21).

    b) Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, ... Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness (the Antichrist) is revealed, the man doomed to destruction (2 Thess.2:1-3).

    c) When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory (Col.3: 4).

    d) But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body (Phil.3:20-21).

    e) God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you (2 Thess. 1:6-10).

CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!

Sons of men and angels say: Alleluia!

Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!

Dying once, He all doth save: Alleluia!

Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done. Alleluia!

Fought the fight, the battle won; Alleluia!

Death in vain forbids Him rise; Alleluia!

PROOF THAT JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD

    PARTS 3 and 4 of  6

    3) THE TESTIMONY OF POSTRESURRECTION APPEARANCES

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. Greetings, he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me (Matt. 28:8-10).

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. ... Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen (Mark 16:9, 14).

While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have (Luke 24:36-39).

Afterwards Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. ... Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, Friends, haven't you any fish? No, they answered. He said, Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, It is the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. ... When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish you have just caught. ... Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. None of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you? They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came , took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead (John 21:1- 14).

    4) THE TESTIMONY OF THE ASCENSION

When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God (Luke 24:50-53).

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. Men of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven (Acts 1:9-11).

PROOF THAT JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD

    PARTS 1 and 2 of  6

    1) THE TESTIMONY OF THE EMPTY TOMB AND THE GRAVECLOTHES

The four gospel writers recorded that the body of Jesus was prepared for burial. He was placed in a new tomb belonging to Joseph of Arimathea. A guard (a number of soldiers) was placed and the stone was sealed to prevent the body from being stolen (Matt.27:57-66; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42).

The gospel of John gives an eyewitness account of what both Peter and himself saw when they went to the tomb on the first day of the week. We read: So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached he tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead) (John 20:3-9).

What did the other disciple (John) see? He saw the strips of linen and the headcloth. What did he believe?  The apostle John believed that Jesus was risen from the dead.  The Holy Spirit had injected divine life into the lifeless body of our Lord and spontaneously disrobed the body of its graveclothes and clothed it with a royal garment woven by the very hands of God.

When some of the guards went to the chief priests and reportd what had happened, the chief priests went to the elders and contrived a plan. They paid a large sum of money to the soldiers and told them what to say. You are to say, His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep. If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble. So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day (Matt. 28:13-15).

The eyewitness account of the apostle John concerning the left behind graveclothes shattered the fabrication  of the chief priests and the elders that the body of Jesus was stolen by his disciples.

If the body of Jesus was stolen by his disciples, then Peter and John, two of the inner circle disciples, would have known and they would not have gone to the tomb on the first day of the week.

Peter and John were fully convinced that Jesus was risen from the dead by the evidence in the tomb.

    2) THE TESTIMONY OF THE HEAVENLY VISITORS

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. ... The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.Come and see the place where he lay (Matt.28: 2, 5-6).

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. ... But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. Don't be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him (Mark 16: 1, 4-6).

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood before them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again. Then they remembered his words (Luke 24:1-8).

CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!

Sons of men and angels say: Alleluia!

Raise your joys and triumphs high. Alleluia!

BIBLE STUDY - KNOW YOUR BIBLE

HOW LONG WAS JESUS IN THE TOMB?

I believe with all my heart that Jesus died for our sins and rose for our justification (Rom. 4: 25). I thank him that he died for me.

If Jesus was crucified on Friday and placed in the tomb on Friday evening, then he was in the tomb for 36 hours or less because when the women went to the tomb early on Sunday morning, just after sunrise, to anoint his body, he was not there. He was already risen (Mark 16: 1-6).

But Jesus taught that he would be in the grave for three days and three nights. We read, For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth (Matt. 12 : 40).

We are informed in the Gospel of John, Now it was the day of preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath … (John 19: 31).

Does a special Sabbath mean that it was not the regular Sabbath (Saturday)? If Jesus died on Wednesday, then Thursday was a Sabbath (John 19: 31). A special Sabbath could have fallen on a week day.

Then Wednesday at sundown (possible time of burial) until Saturday at sundown (possible time of resurrection) would have given three days and three nights (72 hours).

The Bible does not tell us that Jesus was buried on Friday and rose from the dead on Sunday morning. It simply tells us that he was buried on the day that he was crucified and the tomb was empty when the women went with the spices on the first day of the week, Sunday.

PLEASE RECEIVE JESUS AS YOUR SAVIOUR AND LORD AND SURRENDER YOUR LIFE TO HIM.

Perhaps the following prayer or one like it will be fitting. Remember, what is important is the faith that Jesus will save you.

Almighty God, I thank you that you sent Jesus to die on the cross for my sins. I believe that you raised him from the dead as the Bible declares. Jesus, I now receive you as my Savior and Lord. I am sorry for my sins and I turn away from them. Lord Jesus, please fulfill your plan for my life. Amen.

    JESUS DIED FOR YOU

Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1: 29, NIV)!

O the love that drew salvation’s plan!

O the grace that brought it down to man!

O the mighty gulf that God did span

    At Calvary!  —Newell

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son (John 3: 16-18, NIV).

Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to The Place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). Here they crucified him and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle (John 19: 16-18, NIV).

PLEASE RECEIVE JESUS AS YOUR SAVIOUR AND LORD AND SURRENDER YOUR LIFE TO HIM.

    WHAT WAS THE EPHOD?

The ephod was a sacred vestment originally worn by the High Priest and made of gold, blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen. It had two shoulder pieces attached to two of its corners, so that it could be fastened. The ephod had a waistband.

Two onyx stones were mounted in gold filigree settings and fastened on the shoulder pieces of the ephod. On the stones were  engraved the names of the sons of Israel, six names on one and six names on the other in the order of their birth. The stones were memorial stones for the twelve sons.

WHY WAS THE AMALEKITE WHO BROUGHT SAUL’S CROWN TO DAVID, KILLED?

An Amalekite brought Saul’s crown and armband to David informing him that Saul and Jonathan were dead. David asked him how did he know that Saul and Jonathan were dead. The man told David that when Saul saw him, Saul said to him, Stand over me and kill me! I am in the throes of death, but I’m still alive. So I stood over him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them her to my lord (2 Samuel 1: 9-10).

David asked the Amalekite if he was not afraid to kill the Lord’s anointed. David then instructed one of his soldiers to kill the Amalekite.

WHAT WAS JEPHTHAH’S VOW AND DID HE KEEP IT?

Gilead had sons by his wife. But he also had a son, Jephthah, by a prostitute. Jephthah was a mighty warrior. When his step brothers were grown up, they drove him away. Jephthah fled from his step brothers and settled in the land of Tob.

Later on when the Ammonites made war on Israel, the elders of Gilead went to the land of Tob to invite Jephthah to be their commander. At first Jephthah refused because he was driven away from his home. But when the elders promised him to be their head if the Lord gives him the victory, he consented.

Jephthah sent a message to the king of Ammon but the king paid no attention to the message. The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah and he advanced against the Ammonites.

Jephthah made a vow to the Lord. If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering (Judges 11: 30-31).

The Lord gave Israel the victory over the Ammonites. When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him dancing to the sound of tambourines. She was his only child.

Jephthah, in order to be faithful to his vow, offered up his only child as a burnt offering. After the two months, she returned to her father and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin (Judges 11: 39).

HOW DID GOD REVEAL HIMSELF TO GIDEON?

As Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress, the angel of the Lord appeared to him. He said to Gideon, The Lord is with you, mighty warrior  (Judges 6: 12). Gideon inquired, if the Lord is with us why has all this trouble befallen us? The Lord instructed him to go in the strength that he has and save Israel from the hands of the Midianites.

But Gideon complained that his clan was the weakest and he was the least in his family. The Lord said to him, I will be with you, and you will strike down the Midianites as if they were but one man (Judges 6: 16).

Gideon asked for a sign that it was really God speaking to him. Gideon went in and prepared an offering. He presented the offering to the Lord.

The angel of the Lord said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth (Judges 6: 20). Gideon did as he was asked to do. The angel of the Lord used the tip of the staff which he had and touched the meat and the unleavened bread.

Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, ‘Ah, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face1’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die’ (Judges 6: 21-23).

WHAT LED TO DAVID BEING ANOINTED KING OF JUDAH?

After Saul’s death David inquired of the Lord if he should go up to one of the towns of Judah. The Lord told him that he should. David asked to what town. The Lord answered, To Hebron (2 Samuel 2: 1).

David went up to Hebron with his two wives Ahinoam and Abigail. He took his fighting men and their families with him and they settled in Hebron and the neighboring towns.

After David and his men settled, the men of Judah came to Hebron and they anointed David king over the house of Judah.

WHO IS THE ANGEL OF THE LORD?

Manoah’s wife was barren. The angel of the Lord appeared to her and informed her that she was going to conceive and have a son. The son was to be a Nazarite, set apart to God from his birth.

In response to Manoah’s prayer the angel of the Lord appeared a second time. Manoah told the angel of the Lord that they would like to prepare a young goat for him. But the angel of the Lord told him that he will not eat any of their food. But he could prepare a burnt offering and offer it to the Lord.

Manoah asked the angel of the Lord his name. The angel of the Lord responded, ‘It is beyond understanding’ (Judges 13: 18).

Then Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and made a sacrifice on a rock to the Lord. As Manoah and his wife looked on the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame, as the flame blazed up from the altar toward heaven.

Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the ground. Manoah said to his wife, ‘We are doomed to die! We have seen God (Judges 13: 22).

A WIFE FROM AMONG THE PHILISTINES?

God had instructed the Israelites that they should not take wives for their sons or husbands for their daughters from the pagan nations around. Also, the angel of the Lord had informed Samson's mother that her son was to be a Nazarite, set apart to God from birth.

So when Samson requested his parents to get a Philistine wife for him, they were alarmed.

Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman. When he returned, he said to his father and mother, ‘I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife’ (Judges 14: 1-2).

His father and mother replied,Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife? But Samson said to his father, ‘Get her for me. She’s the right one for me’ (Judges 14: 3).

His parents did not know that this was from the Lord, who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel (Judges 14: 4).

WHAT INCIDENTS DEMONSTRATED SAMSON’S SUPERNATURAL STRENGTH?

As Samson and his parents approached the vineyards of Timnah, a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat (Judges 14: 6).

Because of what Samson had done to the Philistines, the men of Judah bound him with two new ropes. As they led him away, on approaching Lehi, the Philistines came toward him shouting.

The Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power. The ropes on his arms became like charred flax, and the bindings dropped from his hands. Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men (Judges 14: 14-15).

After the Philistines had gouged out Samson’s eyes, they placed him in prison. When the rulers of the Philistines had assembled to offer a sacrifice to their god, Dagon, the people requested that Samson be brought out of the prison to entertain them. He was taken to the temple and placed among the pillars. Samson asked the servant who held his hand, ‘Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple , so that I may lean against them’ (Judges 16: 26).

Then Samson prayed to the Lord, ‘O Sovereign Lord, remember me. O God, please strengthen me once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes' (Judges 16: 28). Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. He braced himself against them, with his right hand on one pillar and his left hand on the other. Then Samson said, ‘Let me die with the Philistines!’ Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than when he lived (Judges 16: 28-30).

WHY WERE REUBEN’S RIGHTS AS FIRSTBORN TAKEN AWAY?

Jacob, whose name was changed by God to Israel, had twelve sons. Reuben was his firstborn and therefore had certain rights.

But his father prophesied concerning him, Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up unto your father’s bed, onto my couch and defiled it (Gen. 49: 3-4).

Because Reuben had sex with his father’s concubine, his rights as firstborn were taken away and given to the sons of Joseph (1 Chronicles 5: 1). As a consequence, he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright. The rights of the firstborn were given to Joseph (1 Chronicles 5: 2).
