Getting Wisdom
James 1:5 is often
used to lightly dismiss the need for personal study by interpreting this to
mean that God will supernaturally endow a Christian with wisdom without effort
on a Christian's part. The fallacy of this interpretation is made plain by
applying this reasoning to other areas. For example, when Jesus taught us to
pray for our daily bread was He encouraging laziness and idleness? No, a job
that enables you to obtain basic necessities should be considered an answer to
prayer for necessities. Consider the context and note the way that James 1:21
is worded: The writer is making an assumption about the readers, that the Word
of God is already engrafted or is supposed to already be engrafted. Are you a
student of the Bible? (Psalm 19:7-8; 119:130; Proverbs 2:3-9; 3:5-7; Matthew
4:4; I Peter 2:2)
