    How Desperate are You, Really?

    HOW DESPERATE ARE YOU, REALLY?

    by Rev. Lynn Fowler

A number of times throughout my Christian life and ministry, the Holy Spirit has challenged me to really consider the words of the hymn or chorus which I happened to be singing at the time. This was one of those occasions. We were singing the beautiful chorus, “This is the Air I Breathe”: when we reached the line, “I'm desperate for You”, the Spirit whispered, “How desperate are you, really?”

It's so easy to sing the words, isn't it? It's so easy to feel our hearts lifted in that sentiment, and to feel a passionate longing for God. There is nothing wrong with that. Our feelings are part of who we are, and they should be part of our worship. It's just that there needs to be more than feelings, more than words. If the feelings and words are all there is, then we are simply tickling our soul realm. It is not true worship, and it is not a true measure of our desperation for God.

How desperate for God are we, really? Are we desperate enough to choose time with God over our favourite television program or sporting event? Of course God understands that we do have things which must be done in our lives, and also that we need time simply relaxing, but if we are honest each one of us has time that we could give to God, but instead we waste indulging our flesh.

Are we desperate enough to seek God's will and way in everything we do, or do we make our plans (including our plans for ministry) and simply expect God to rubber -stamp them? Are we desperate enough to lay down our own views, desires and ways of doing things, in order to do God's thing in God's way?

Are we desperate enough to change? So many of us say, “This is who I am. I don't want to become a different person.” Yet change is intrinsic to growth. How would it be if a baby refused to allow the changes necessary to become an adult? Many people protest, “But God loves me just the way I am.” It's true, He does. He also loves you too much to leave you the way you are. Our destiny is to be conformed to the image of Christ (Rom 8:29). Unless you are there already, that means change.

Are we desperate enough to seek God for Himself, even if there is nothing else in the package? When I return from a ministry trip, the first question my grandchildren ask when they see me is, “What have you brought us, Grandma?” Whilst I am delighted to bring them some small gifts from my travels, I so look forward to the day when they will be mature enough to welcome me for myself, not just for what I bring. We in the west have been brought up in the faith to believe that God brings with Him all kinds of “presents” - healing, provision, peace, and just about anything we need or want. God delights to give us those things, but He has something better for us – Himself. Jesus told us to “seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” (Matt 6:33) Babies seek God only for what He can give them. Mature Christians, those who are truly desperate for Him, have come to a place where even if they are never healed, even if their most pressing needs are never met, they still want God.

Are we desperate enough to truly lay down our lives? To put God before everything else, including ourselves? To risk our reputation, our security, and everything else for the sake of the Kingdom? Would we be prepared to pay the ultimate price of literally giving our lives for our Lord? Those who minister to the persecuted church estimate that around the world one person every three to four minutes loses his or her life for Christ. That means that, if you spent two hours in church on Sunday, between 30 and 40 of your brothers and sisters around the world died for Jesus during the time you were worshipping. Now, that's desperate.
