HOW DID GOD SHOW HIS PATIENCE IN DEALING WITH GIDEON?

After the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and assured him of success against the Midianites, Gideon asked him for a sign to indicate that it was really the Lord speaking to him. The angel of the Lord give him a sign by producing fire that consumed the offering that Gideon presented.

As the Midianites and those who were fighting with them crossed over the Jordan and camped in the valley of Jezreel, the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon. But Gideon was hesitant to go into battle.

Gideon asked the Lord for another sign. He said to the Lord that he will place a  wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there were dew only on the fleece and all the ground was dry, then he would be sure of victory. That was exactly what happened the next morning. Gideon was able to squeeze the fleece and get a bowlful of water.

But was Gideon now confident? No! He asked the Lord for a third sign. He requested one more test with the fleece. He asked the Lord to keep the fleece dry and to cover the ground with dew. That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with dew  (Judges 6: 40).

HOW DID GOD MANIFEST HIS POWER IN THE DEFEAT OF THE MIDIANITES?

Gideon called together the army of Israel after God called him to deliver the people. But the Lord said to Gideon, You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, announce now to the people, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained (Judges 7: 2-3).

God said to Gideon that he still had too many men. So God gave Gideon a plan whereby the number of men will be decreased. He was asked by God to take the men down to the water to drink and separate those who lapped the water with their tongues like dogs from those who knelt down to drink. Three hundred men lapped the water from their hands while nine thousand seven hundred got down on their knees to drink.

The Lord said to Gideon, With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the other men go, each to his own place (Judges 7: 7).

During the night, God asked Gideon to go down to the camp of the Midianites and listen to what they were saying. Gideon reached the camp in time to listen a man who was telling a friend about a dream that he had and also the meaning of the dream that his friend gave to him.

When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped God. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, ‘Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands’ (Judges 7: 15).

Gideon divided the three hundred men into three units and gave them a strategy. ‘When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords’ (Judges 7: 22). The Midianite army fled. The army of Israel pursued the Midianites and God enabled them to be victorious.

    WHAT IS CHRISTMAS ALL ABOUT?

Millions of people around the world celebrate Christmas, the birthday of Jesus. But do they know the Christ of Christmas? Why December 25th ? December 25th was chosen by early Christians to coincide with a pagan festival (the celebration of the Winter Solstice). Why did Christians do that? It was done with the hope of attracting pagans to Christianity.

But when was Jesus really born? The Bible does not give us the date. But since the shepherds were out in the field looking after their flocks, it is concluded that Jesus was not born in the month of December. His birth could have taken place during the Fall of the year.

The date is not really important. If it were, then the Bible would have recorded it. What is important is the reason why Jesus was born. Jesus was born to die for the sin of the world. The apostle John says of Jesus, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1: 29).

The reason for the birth of Jesus and the facts surrounding his birth could not have been invented by the human mind. They had to be from God.

Why should people believe in Jesus and put their trust in him? People should  believe in Jesus and put their trust in him because of God’s great love for us. The apostle Paul describes God’s gift to us in these word. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift (2 Cor. 9: 15).

Approximately 700 years before Jesus was born the prophet Isaiah wrote about him. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isa. 9: 6).

God does not compel people to believe in Jesus. We can accept him or we can reject him. But the Bible warns us that there will be a day of judgment. Those who believe in Jesus will spend eternity with him and those who reject him will spend eternity in the lake of burning sulfur (Rev. 21: 1-8).

... This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed ... (2 Thess. 1: 7-10).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12).

He did not use a silvery box

HOW DID GOD SHOW HIS GOODNESS TO THE ISRAELITES AFTER THEIR EVIL DEEDS?

After Deborah’s victory over the Canaanites (Jabin, a king of Canaan), the land had peace for forty years. But the Israelites again did evil in the eyes of the Lord. So God gave them over for seven years into the hands of the Midianites.

The Midianites impoverished the Israelites. The Israelites again cried out to the Lord. God listened to their cries and gave them a deliverer, Gideon. The Israelites under Gideon subdued the Midianites. During the lifetime of Gideon the land enjoyed peace for forty years.

But as soon as Gideon died the Israelites again did evil in the eyes of the Lord. They turned to the worship of pagan gods. They were also very ungrateful because they failed to show gratitude to the family of Gideon.  God used Gideon to end the oppression of the Midianites.

WHO WAS THE ONLY FEMALE JUDGE GOD GAVE TO ISRAEL?

After Ehud’s death, God gave Israel another judge, Shamgar. He was known for striking down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad.

But the Israelites once again did evil in the eyes of the Lord. So God gave them into the hands of Jabin, a king of Canaan. The commander of his army was Sisera. He had nine hundred iron chariots and had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years.

The Israelites once again cried out to God and he gave them a fourth judge, Deborah. She was a prophetess and wife of Lappidoth. She was the greatest judge Israel ever had.

She summoned Barak and said to him, ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: ‘Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead the way to Mount Tabor. I will lure Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River and give him into your hands’  (Judges 4: 6-7).

Barak said to her, ‘If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go’  (Judges 4: 8).

Deborah decided to go with Barak and told him that because of his attitude the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman and the honor will be hers.

Barak advanced with ten thousand men and all the troops of Sisera fell by the sword. Not a man was left. Sisera fled on foot and went to the tent of Jael because there were friendly relations between Jabin, king of Hazor, and the clan of Heber.  Jael’s husband was from the clan of Heber.

As Sisera was sleeping, Jael killed him by driving a peg through his temple. So God subdued Jabin, the Canaanite king, and Israel eventually destroyed him.

HOW WAS MOAB MADE SUBJECT TO ISRAEL?

Israel had a habit of reverting to their evil ways after receiving the blessings of God. Under Judge, Othniel, God gave Israel success over the king of Aram. Israel had peace for forty years until their Judge, Othniel died.

Once again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord. Because of their evil, God gave Eglon, king of Moab, power over Israel. The Israelites were subject to the king of Moab for eighteen years. But the Israelites cried out to God again and he gave them a deliverer, Ehud, a left handed man.

The Israelites sent Ehud with a tribute to the king of Moab. After the tribute was presented the men left the king. On his way Ehud turned back, went to the king, pretending that he had a secret message for him. The king asked his attendants to leave so that only Ehud was with him.

Ehud approached the king while he was sitting in the upper room of his summer palace. He said, I have a message from God for you (Judges 3: 20). As the king stood, Ehud drew his sword which was strapped to his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly. The king was a fat man so the sword went in and came out his back. Ehud escaped. A little later the king’s attendants went in and found him dead.

That day Moab was made subject to Israel and the land had peace for eighty years.

AS AN OLD MAN, WHAT ADVICE DID JOSHUA GIVE TO THE LEADERS OF ISRAEL?

As time passed and God gave Israel rest from all their enemies, Joshua gathered all Israel and said to them, I am old and well advanced in years. You yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the Lord your God who fought for you. … Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. But you are to hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have until now (Joshua 23: 2-3, 6-8).

The Lord has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. One of you routs a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, just as he promised. So be very careful to love the Lord your God (Joshua 23: 9-11).

But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them, then you may be sure that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the Lord your God has given you (Joshua 23: 12-13).

The people of Israel failed to keep their commitment and they received the punishment that Joshua warned them about.

We know from the Bible that the Israelites were taken into Assyrian captivity and later into Babylonian captivity. As God had promised, he allowed a remnant to return to the land of Canaan when they sought him (Ezra, chapter 2).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12).

DID ISRAEL RECEIVE ALL THE LAND THAT GOD PROMISED TO ABRAHAM?

There are some Bible scholars today who claim that Israel did not receive all the land that was promised to them by God. Dr. David Jeremiah writes, When you look at a map and locate that tiny strip of land Israel now claims as hers, you can see that she does not now, nor has ever fully occupied the land that was described to Abraham in God’s covenant promise. If Israel were currently occupying all the land promised to her, she would control all the holdings of the present day Israel, Lebanon, the West Bank of Jordan, and substantial portions of Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Not until the millennium will Israel occupy all the land the Lord gave her in His promise to Abraham (WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON? Thomas Nelson, Nashville, TE; 2008, pp. 10-11.

The land promised to Abraham (Gen. 15: 18-21) stretched from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.

Joshua tells us that Israel received all the land that God had promised to their forefathers, So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there (Joshua 21: 43).

We read in the Book of Kings, And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River  (the Euphrates) to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt (1 Kings 4: 21).

Israel does not have to wait for the land that God promised to Abraham. Israel possessed the land in the past.

WHAT INCIDENT LED TO THE SUN STANDING STILL?

When King AdoniZedek of Jerusalem heard about Joshua’s capture of Jericho and Ai as well as his treaty with the people of Gibeon, he and his people were alarmed so he sought the help of four other kings to go up with him to attack Gibeon because it was an important city. All the men of Gibeon were good fighters. Come up and help me attack Gibeon because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites (Joshua 10: 4).

The other five kings of the Amorites joined with the king of Jerusalem and the four other kings whose help he received. They moved all their troops against Gideon and attacked it. The Gibeonites sent word to Joshua seeking his help. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us (Joshua 10: 6).

Joshua responded to the Gibeonites and God promised him victory. Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you (Joshua 10: 8).

On the day that God gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua prayed, O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the valley of Aijalon (Joshua 10: 12).

As a result of Joshua’s prayer, the sun and moon stood still until the nation was able to defeat those who attacked her.

The sun and moon standing still means that the earth had stopped its rotation during that period.

    WHAT WAS THE GIDEONITE DECEPTION?

When all the kings west of the Jordan, that is, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizetes, Hivites and Jebusites, heard about the exploits of the Israelites they came together to make war against Joshua and Israel.

However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai they decided on a scheme (trick). They went as a delegation pretending that they had come from a distant country. Their donkeys carried worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. The men were dressed with patched sandals and worn out clothes. Their food supply had dry, moldy bread. They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal.

They asked Joshua and the men of Israel to make a treaty with them saying that they had heard about the fame of Israel’s God recalling what he did for them in Egypt and on their way to the promised land.  They promised to be servants of Israel. The men of Israel sampled their food and believed them.

Joshua and the men of Israel failed to do the most important thing, that is, to inquire of the LORD.

Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by an oath. Three days later the Israelites learned that the Gibeonites were their neighbors.

A short time later the Israelites went out to attack the neighbouring cities but Gibeon was not attacked because of the oath that was sworn. The Gibeonites became the woodcutters and water carriers for the entire Israelite community.

Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and pronounced a curse on them because of their trickery. You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God (Josh. 9: 23).

WHY WAS JOSHUA’S SECOND ATTEMPT TO CONQUER AI SUCCESSFUL?

The reasons for the failure of the Israelites to conquer Ai the first time were:

    1)   Israel had sinned – Achan’s sin

    2)   Joshua did not seek a plan from God.

After Joshua and the Israelites appeased God by putting to death Achan and all those belonging to him as well as his cattle, donkeys and sheep and getting rid of the stolen articles, he received God’s promise to be successful against the people of Ai the second time.

He was commanded to use the whole army.  Here was Joshua’s strategy. He sent out thirty thousand of his best fighting men at night.  They were ordered to set an ambush behind the city and not to go very far from it. They were required to be on the alert.

Joshua and the remainder of the army were to advance on the city. When the fighting men of Ai went out against them they had planned to flee from them. When Joshua and the men with him had lured the fighting men of Ai away from the city, then the men in ambush were to take the city.

The men who were in ambush were commanded to set the city on fire after they had taken it.

After the city was taken and set on fire, the fighting men of Israel turned back and finally the men of Ai who were lured away from the city were caught in the middle. Because Joshua and the men with him who were fleeing from the men of Ai towards the desert turned back against their pursuers. There were Israelites in front of them and at the back of them.

In this way Israel was able to completely wipe out the inhabitants of Ai.

Please read the story in the Book of Joshua, chapters seven and eight.

WHY WAS JOSHUA’S FIRST ATTEMPT TO CONQUER AI A FAILURE?

God informed the Israelites what they had to do when they took the city of Jericho. He said to them, … keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring disaster on it. All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury (Joshua 6: 18-19).

When the people did what God had commanded Joshua to do, the wall of the city collapsed. The Israelites charged in and took the city. They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they placed the devoted things into the treasury of the Lord. But Achan of the tribe of Judah took some of the articles that they were forbidden to take. As a result the Lord was angry with Israel.

As the Israelites attacked the city of Ai they were defeated and the fighting men became very frustrated. Ai was smaller than Jericho and the Israelites believed that it was a sure victory for them. When Joshua inquired of the Lord the reason for their defeat, God told him that the Israelites had sinned. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. … I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction (Joshua 7: 11-12).

God instructed Joshua what he had to do and he did. When Joshua got to Achan he asked him what he had done. Achan replied, It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done (Joshua 7: 20). Achan told him where he had placed the articles. Messengers were sent. They found the articles that were stolen by Achan and brought them to Joshua.

Joshua and all the Israelites took Achan, all the articles that were recovered, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor. They stoned Achan and all the others with him and burned them. They then heaped up a large pile of rocks over Achan

The Lord removed his anger against Israel.

WHAT DID RAHAB DO FOR THE ISRAELITES THAT BROUGHT BLESSINGS TO HER FAMILY AND HERSELF?

Before the Israelites crossed the Jordan, Joshua, the newly appointed leader, secretly sent two spies from Shittim to look over the land. He said, ‘Go, look over the land, especially Jericho' (Joshua 2: 1). The spies went and entered the house  of a prostitute and stayed there. Her name was Rahab.

The king of Jericho was told about the spies so he sent a message to Rahab. ‘Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land' (Joshua 2: 3).

But Rahab had hidden the men. She said to the messengers, ‘Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, the men left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them' (Joshua 2: 4-5).

But Rahab had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under stalks of flax that she had put on the roof. So the messengers went after the two spies.

After they left, Rahab went up on the roof and told the spies that she knew the Lord had given them the land and there was great fear among the inhabitants. She also mentioned to the spies that the people had heard about the miracles the Lord had performed for them.

She asked the spies to swear to her that they would show kindness to he family because of her kindness to them. They said to her, ‘If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land'  (Joshua 2: 14).

Rahab let the spies down by a rope through the window, since her house was part of the city wall. She asked the spies to go to the hills and hide themselves for three days until the messengers had returned. After three days they should go on their way.

The spies said that the oath they swore to her  would only be valid if she brought all her family into her house and tied a scarlet cord in the window through which they were let  down.

The spies kept their oath. Rahab and her family were safe when the Israelites possessed the land. Rahab through her marriage to an Israelite became the great grandmother of King David (Matt. 1: 5; Ruth 4: 18-21). As such, Rahab is listed in the ancestry of Jesus. What blessings!

WHY IS THE BURIAL SITE OF MOSES UNKNOWN?

And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. (Deut. 34: 5-6).

After Moses addressed the Israelites in the presence of Joshua, God commanded him to go up into the Abarim Range to Mount Nebo in Moab, across from Jericho, and view Canaan, the land that he was giving to the Israelites as their own possession. The Lord further told Moses that he would die on the mountain. There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people (Deut. 32: 50).

Since Moses climbed up the mountain by himself there were no witnesses to identify the place where he was buried. Moses was buried by God. He is the only person in Biblical history to be buried by God.

WHO WERE SERVANTS OF THE LORD?

And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said (Deut. 34: 5).

A servant of the Lord or the servant of the Lord is a special title used to refer to those whom the Lord, as the awesome God, the Great King, has called to be in his service. They serve as members of God’s royal administration.

The title was used for Abraham (Gen. 26: 24), Moses (Exod. 14: 31; Joshua (Josh. 24: 29); King David ( 2 Sam. 7: 5), the prophets (2 Kings 9: 7), the nation of Israel (Isa. 41: 8), and King Nebuchadnezzar (Jer. 25: 9).

It is interesting that Jesus is referred to as my servant ( Isa. 42: 1; 52: 13).

As a member in God’s service, God had a special name for King Cyrus of Persia my anointed (Isa. 45: 1). Jesus is called the Anointed One (Dan. 9: 26).

The apostle Paul called himself a servanr of Christ Jesus (Rom. 1: 1). The designation a servant of Christ Jesus or Jesus Christ could be applied to all of the apostles and any minister who is faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If they are servants of Jesus Christ then they are also servants of God.

    WHAT ARE URIM AND THUMMIM?

As Moses blessed the tribes, About Levi he said,  Your Thummim and Urim belong to the man you favored. You tested him at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah (Deut. 33: 8).

Urim and Thummim (lights and perfections). These objects were not specifically described. Perhaps they were stones which were placed in the breastplate of the high priest, by which he determined the will of God in any important matter relating to the nation (Exod. 28: 30; Lev. 8: 8).

One theory is that they were used as dice and the manner in which they fell revealed the Lord’s will (1 Sam. 10: 19-22; 14: 37-42).

Another theory is that they were a symbol of the authority of the high priest to seek God’s will. God’s will being revealed to him through inner illumination (Exod. 28: 30; Num. 20: 28; Neh. 7: 65).

HOW DID GOD REVEAL TO MOSES HIS PLAN FOR THE GENTILES?

In the Song of Moses, he talked about what the Israelites did that angered God and tells about God’s plan for the Gentiles

Of the Israelites he said, They made him jealous with their foreign God’s and angered him with their detestable idols. They sacrificed to demons, which are not God—gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your fathers did not fear. You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth. The Lord saw this and rejected them because he was angered by his sons and daughters. ‘I will hide my face from them,’ he said, ‘and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, children who are unfaithful  (Deut. 32: 16-20).

He said about the Israelites concerning the Gentiles, They made me jealous by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols. I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding (Deut. 32: 21).

    Obedience is better than sacrifice.

WHO WAS “THE MAN” WITH THE DRAWN SWORD?

When Joshua was near Jericho he saw a man standing in front of him with a sword in his hand. Joshua inquired of him whether he was for the Israelites or their enemies. The man said neither for them nor their enemies. He further said, ‘But as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come' (Joshua 5: 14). In reverence, Joshua fell facedown to the ground. Joshua asked him, ‘What message does my Lord have for his servant' (Joshua 5: 14)? The commander of the Lord’s army replied, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy' (Joshua 5: 15). Joshua did as he was commanded.

Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its kings and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in’ (Joshua 6: 2-5).

Joshua got up early next morning and did exactly as he was commanded. On the seventh day, when the trumpets sounded a long blast, the people shouted and the wall collapsed. The people charged straight in and took the city.
