The Virgin Birth Is Central In The Christmas Story

In today’s devotion, I want to probe your mind with the question, “Is it important for Christians to believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ?” And I respond to my own question with an empathic “Yes”! Now, I understand that my salvation wasn’t secured by faith in the virgin birth, but without the virgin birth, my salvation couldn’t have been secured at all.

I want to share four reason as to why especially Christians should believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. First, God promised the virgin birth.  Isaiah, a prophet in the Old Testament some 681 years plus before Jesus’ time, wrote in his book, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call His name Immanuel”.

That seemed an impossible prophesy to fulfill. No one had ever heard of a virgin giving birth. But as it entered into the teachings among the Jewish people, the prophet’s words came to sink deep into many a family. As young girls were born and began to grow older, there was surely the anticipation that perhaps the right young woman had been chosen in their time. Yet, as the years came and passed, there was no fulfillment.

Had God really spoken to Isaiah or to Ahaz to give to them this hope for their future? Or had these good men missed the point or had they merely made up the story? Perhaps people wondered if ever this promise would be fulfilled.

One important thing we can carry from this story at this season of the year is that God always keeps His promises. Since we know the end of the story, we can say with all assurance that we should believe in the virgin birth because God promised it to come to pass.

Second, we should believe in the virgin birth of Jesus because the angel proclaimed it. First, there was the angel’s visit with Joseph. The gospel writer Matthew begins the angel’s visit with these words: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit”(1:18).

Joseph was a good and just man and sought to have Mary put away without public fanfare so as to do no further harm to her reputation. But the angel informed him that he had nothing to fear. Mary had not been unfaithful to him, she had not been involved in sexual sin. Rather, Mary was that single chosen virgin the prophet told the Jews about some 681 plus years before.

There are disputes about what Isaiah meant when he promised the virgin in his prophesy. But when we come to the New Testament, the meaning becomes clear. “Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus”(Mt. 1:24-25). Mary remained a virgin throughout the nine-month pregnancy but didn’t remain a virgin after the birth of Jesus Christ.

The angel also visited Mary (Lk. 1:26-35) to tell her what was about to take place in her life. Listen to what Mary said to the angel. “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”(v. 34). The word know is better understood as a sexual relationship. Mary was that virgin chosen by God.

Third, we should believe in the virgin birth of Jesus because the Holy Spirit produced it. Hear the angel’s words to Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God”(Lk 1:35).

Finally, we should believe in the virgin birth of Jesus because the sinner pleads for it. At the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist, the baptizer cried out, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”(Jo 1:29). The sinner under the convicting power of the Holy Spirit knows the blood of a thousand animals could never cleanse a sinner from sin. That convicted sinner comes to realize that “. . . having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”(Ro 5:1).

For those who are reading these lines prior to Christmas day, please remember with every gift given and every gift received, that God has already given the greatest of all gifts — His one and only of a kind Son! For those reading these lines after Christmas day, it’s still not too late to thank God for His unspeakable gift. Merry Christmas!
