HOW WAS THE EPHOD USED TO INQUIRE OF THE LORD?

The Amalekites raided the Negev and Ziklag. They burned Ziklag and took all the people captive. No one was killed but the people were taken away.

When David and his men arrived at Ziklag and found their wives and children taken captive, they wept aloud until they were exhausted. David was distressed but he found strength in God.

David asked Abiathar, the priest, to bring him the Ephod. David used the Ephod to inquire of the Lord. He said, Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them (1 Samuel 30: 8)? God informed him that he should pursue them. God said, You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue (1 Samuel 30: 8).

David and six hundred men set out but some were exhausted and could not continue. So David and four hundred men pursued. David caught up with the Amalekites and fought them until the evening of the next day. David recovered everything they had taken including the women and children. David brought everything back.

It is not clear from Scripture how David used the Ephod to inquire of the Lord.

    HOW WAS KING SAUL KILLED?

The Philistines engaged Israel in battle but the Israelites fled. Many of the Israelites were slain on Mount Gilboa. The Philistines advanced towards King Saul and his sons. Their advance resulted in the death of the sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua.

The fighting was intense around King Saul. The archers of the Philistines overtook him and they wounded him severely.

Saul said to his armor-bearer, ‘Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me’ (1 Samuel 31: 4).

The armor-bearer was afraid and did not kill the king. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. As Saul lay dead, his armor-bearer fell on his sword and died as well.

WHY DID SAUL SEEK ADVICE FROM SAMUEL AFTER SAMUEL’S DEATH?

When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid. He sought advice from the Lord but God did not answer him. So Saul asked his attendants to find him a woman who was a medium so that he could inquire of her. His attendants told him that there was one in Endor. Saul disguised himself and went with two of his men during the night.

After some hesitation, the medium said to Saul, Whom shall I bring up for you (1 Samuel 28: 11)? Saul requested Samuel. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, ‘Why have you deceived me? You are Saul (1 Samuel 28: 12)!

Samuel said to Saul, ‘Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up (1 Samuel 28: 15). Saul explained to Samuel that he was in great anguish because the Philistines were fighting against him and he was not receiving answers from God. As a result, he wanted advice from him.

Samuel said to Saul, Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today. The Lord will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also hand over the army of Israel to the Philistines (1 Samuel 28: 18-19).

WHY DID DAVID AND HIS MEN EAT THE CONSECRATED BREAD?

After Saul tried to kill David by hurling his spear at him, David went to the priest , Ahimelech, at Nob. David did not have any food supplies so he asked the priest for some. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find (1 Samuel 21: 3).

The priest said to David, I don’t have any ordinary bread on hand; however, there is some consecrated bread here—provided the men have kept themselves from women (1 Samuel 21: 4).

David assured the priest that that the men did not involve themselves with women. So the priest gave David the consecrated bread. That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.

WHAT LED TO DAVID SPARING SAUL’S LIFE?

After Saul returned from going after the Philistines, he was informed that David was in the Desert of En Gedi. As a result, Saul took three thousand men and set out to look for David and his men.

As they were going, Saul went into a cave to relieve himself. But David and his men were hiding in the cave. David’s men said to him, 'This is the very day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish’ (1 Samuel 24: 4).

David crept up unnoticed and cut off a piece of Saul’s coat. After he had done it he was sorry.  He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord’ (1 Samuel 24: 6).

David did not allow his men to attack Saul. So Saul left the cave and went away.

    SAUL’S ATTEMPT TO KILL DAVID

Because of Saul’s jealousy for David, he told his son Jonathan and all his attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very fond of David and warned him, My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there (1 Samuel 19: 2).

Jonathan promised David that he would go out in the field with his father where David was and would speak with him about David. Whatever he found out from his father, he promised to share with David.

Jonathan spoke well about David to his father. He said, Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason (1 Samuel 19: 4-5).

Saul promised Jonathan that he would not put David to death and Jonathan shared this information with David. However, one day when an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul he attempted to kill David. While David was playing the harp, Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape (1 Samuel 19: 9-10).

WHY WAS KING SAUL JEALOUS OF DAVID?

As the men were returning home after David had killed Goliath, the women came out from everywhere to meet king Saul. They were singing and dancing. They played tambourines and lutes. As they danced, they sang: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’ (1 Samuel 18: 7).

Saul was very angry because of what they sang. They gave more credit to David than to him. And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David (1 Samuel 18: 9).

    DAVID AND GOLIATH

Goliath issued a challenge to the army of Israel. He asked them to choose a man who will fight him. If the man that Israel chose fought and killed him, the Philistines would become the subjects of Israel. But if Goliath fought and killed the Israelite, then Israel would become the subjects of the Philistines and serve them.

Goliath said, This day I defy the ranks of Israel!  Give me a man and let us fight each other.’ On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified (1 Samuel 17: 10-11).

Goliath came forward every morning and evening ready to fight. He did so for forty days. Finally David volunteered to be the man who would fight Goliath. After David shared with king Saul how God had used him to kill both a lion and bear while tending his father’s sheep, Saul gave him permission to represent Israel.

David said to Goliath, You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands (1 Samuel 17: 45-47).

As Goliath moved closer to attack David, David ran to meet him. David slung a stone and it struck Goliath on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground (1 Samuel 17: 49).

David went and stood over Goliath. He used Goliath’s sword to kill him and cut off his head.

The Philistines seeing what had happened ran away. Israel pursued them killing many. On returning, the men plundered the camp of the Philistines. David brought Goliath’s head to Jerusalem and he placed Goliath’s weapons in his tent.

DAVID IN THE SERVICE OF KING SAUL

Samuel announced to Saul that God was taking the kingdom away from him and giving it to one of his neighbors. But Saul was not removed from the throne immediately.

We are informed in Scripture that after Samuel told Saul about God’s choice of David as king, the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and an evil spirit tormented him.

Saul’s attendants suggested to him that he should send his servants to search for someone who was able to play the harp. The playing of the harp will make him feel better when the evil spirit from the Lord came upon him.

One of Saul’s servants told him about David. He said that the Lord was with David and since he could play the harp, he would be a suitable choice.

Saul sent for David and so he entered the king’s service.

HOW DID THE ANOINTING OF DAVID COME ABOUT?

After Samuel announced to Saul that God had taken the kingdom away from him, he informed Saul that God was giving the kingdom to one of his neighbors. The person was better than he was.

Some time later God said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king (1 Samuel 16: 1).

Samuel was hesitant. He said to God that Saul would hear about it and kill him.

God gave Samuel the following instruction. Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate (1 Samuel 16: 2-3).

Samuel arrived at Bethlehem and invited the elders of the town as well as Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice. Samuel saw the seven sons of Jesse who were present and informed Jesse that the Lord had not chosen any of them to be anointed king.

Samuel then said to Jesse, Are these all the sons you have (1 Samuel 16: 11)? Jesse replied, There is still the youngest but he is tending the sheep (1 Samuel 16: 11).

Samuel asked Jesse to send for him. The youngest son came and God said to Samuel, Rise and anoint him; he is the one (1 Samuel 16: 12).

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power (1 Samuel 16: 13).

The Bible says about David, He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features (1 Samuel 16: 12).

God testified about David elsewhere in the Bible, I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do (Acts 13: 22).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

WHAT WAS SAMUEL’S LAST ACT OF KINDNESS TO KING SAUL?

After Samuel informed King Saul that God had taken the kingdom of Israel from him and given it to another, Saul asked Samuel to honor him before the elders of his people and before Israel by going with him so that he would be able to worship God.

Samuel accompanied him and Saul worshiped the Lord.

Samuel asked that Agag, king of the Amalekites, be brought to him and Samuel put him to death.

Samuel mourned for Saul, but until the day Samuel died, he did not go to see Saul again.

WHY DID GOD REJECT KING SAUL?

Samuel gave King Saul a message from the Lord. This is what the message said, I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt (1 Samuel 15: 2).

God instructed Saul through Samuel that he should attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything that belonged to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys (1 Samuel 15: 3).

Saul and his men completely destroyed the people except Agag, king of the Amalekites. They took him alive. They also spared the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs—everything that was good. They destroyed everything that was weak.

Then God spoke to Samuel, I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions (1 Samuel 15: 10).

Next morning Samuel went out to meet Saul. Saul said to Samuel that he had carried out the Lord’s command but he was not being honest.

Samuel said to him, What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear? Saul said, The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest (1 Samuel 15: 15).

Saul admitted to Samuel that he had sinned by violating the Lord’s command and Samuel’s instructions.

Samuel said to Saul, The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you. He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind (1 Samuel 15: 28-29).

WHY DID SAMUEL REBUKE KING SAUL?

The Philistines assembled to fight Israel. They were well equipped. They had three thousand chariots, six thousand charioteers, and a great amount of soldiers.

When Israel saw that it was a critical situation and believed it was impossible for them to defeat the Philistines, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns (1 Samuel 13: 6).

Some of the men crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead.

Saul remained at Gilgal and all the troops with him were fearful. He waited for seven days for Samuel as had been arranged but Samuel did not show up. Saul’s troops began to scatter.

Saul said to some of his men, Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings (1 Samuel 13: 9).

Saul offered up the burnt offering. As soon as he was finished, Samuel arrived. Saul went to meet him.

Samuel said to Saul, ‘What have you done’? Saul replied, ‘When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Micmash, I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering’ (1 Samuel 13: 11-13).

'You acted foolishly,' Samuel said.'You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord's command (1 Samuel 13: 13-14).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

    ISRAEL’S FIRST KING

The people of Israel refused to listen to Samuel and demanded a king. ‘No!’ they said. We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles (1 Samuel 8: 19-20).

Samuel spoke to the Lord about what the people had demanded. God said, Listen to them and give them a king (1 Samuel 8: 22).

One day as Saul was out with a servant looking for his father’s donkeys, the servant directed him to Samuel. When Samuel saw Saul the Lord said to him, This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people (1 Samuel 9: 17).

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, ‘Has not the Lord anointed you leader over his inheritance’ (1 Samuel 10: 1).

Saul was an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the others (1 Samuel 9: 2).

WHY DID THE  ISRAELITES REQUEST SAMUEL TO APPOINT A KING?

When Samuel became an old man, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. Their names were Joel and Abijah. His sons were wicked men. They were involved in dishonest activities and accepted bribes. Their decisions were not just.

As a result, the elders of Israel went to Samuel and said to him, You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have (1 Samuel 8: 5).

Their request displeased Samuel so he prayed to God. God said to him, Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected as their king, but me (1 Samuel 8: 7).

God told Samuel to warn the people what the king would do. He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. … He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves, and give them to his attendants. Your menservants and maidservants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the Lord will not answer you in that day (1 Samuel 8: 11-18).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

WHEN SAMUEL SET UP A STONE AS A MEMORIAL, WHY DID HE NAME IT EBENEZER?

When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the army of the Philistines went up to attack them. The Israelites, on hearing this, were afraid.  So they asked Samuel to cry out to the Lord so that he could rescue them. Samuel offered up a suckling lamb as a burnt offering to the Lord and cried out on Israel’s behalf.

As Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. The Lord answered Samuel’s cry and he threw the Philistines into a great panic. As a result the Philistines were defeated. Many of them were slaughtered.

After this Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shem. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far has the Lord helped us’ (1 Samuel 7: 12).

    Ebenezer means stone of help.

After that defeat, the Philistines were subdued and never invaded Israel again.

WHY WAS THE ARK OF THE LORD RETURNED TO ISRAEL?

After the Philistines captured the ark, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. They took the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. Early the next morning the people of Ashdod observed that Dagon had fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord. The people put Dagon back in his place but the following morning the same thing happened. Dagon was on the ground. His head and hands were broken off and lying on the threshold. His body was on the ground close to where it was erected. After that incident, the priests of Dagon and the people who entered the temple never stepped on the threshold.

The Philistines were punished by God because of what they did with the ark. God brought devastation upon them and afflicted them with tumors. When the people saw what was happening, they said, The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon our god (1 Samuel 5: 7).

The people called together the rulers of the Philistines and the rulers decided that the ark should be taken to Gath. So the ark was moved.

But God continued to punish the people, afflicting them with tumors. So the ark of God was moved from Gath to Ekron. But the people of Ekron objected and asked their rulers to send the ark to Israel because they feared that they would be killed. The hand of God was heavy upon the city.

The ark was sent to Beth Shemesh but God struck down seventy of the men of that place because they had looked into the ark of the Lord.

The people of Beth Shemesh sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim, saying, The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your place (1 Samuel 6: 21).

The men of Kiriath Jearim went down and took the ark.  They took it to Abinadab’s house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord (1 Samuel 7: 1).

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT DAGON?

Dagon was the pagan deity with body of fish and head and hands of man. He was probably the god of agriculture. He was worshiped in Mesopotamia and Canaan. There were Dagon temples in Ashdod (1 Samuel 5: 1-7), Gaza (Judges 16: 21-30) and in Israel (1 Chronicles 10: 10). Samson destroyed the temple in Gaza (Judges 16: 30).

HOW WAS THE ARK OF THE LORD CAPTURED?

The Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines camped at Aphek. Israel suffered defeat at the hands of the Philistines. The Philistines killed about four thousand men on the battlefield.

When the soldiers returned to camp the elders of Israel asked, Why  did the Lord bring defeat upon us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that it may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies (1 Samuel 4: 3).

The ark of the covenant was brought back from Shiloh and Hophni and Phinehas were there with the ark.

The Israelites were delighted that they had the ark of the covenant but the Philistines were afraid. A battle took place. The Israelites were defeated and every soldier fled to his camp. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died (1 Samuel 4: 10).

WHY WAS IT THE LORD’S WILL TO PUT THE SONS OF ELI, THE HIGH PRIEST, TO DEATH?

Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli, the high priest, were wicked men. They sinned against the Lord by treating the Lord’s offering with contempt (1 Samuel 2: 12-16).

They also sinned against the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting by sleeping with them (1 Samuel 2: 22).

Eli said to his sons, ‘Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the Lord’s people. If a man sins against another man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him?’ His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death (1 Samuel 2: 23-25).

WHY DID SAMUEL HAVE GOD’S FAVOR?

After Samuel was weaned he was presented to the Lord. Samuel lived in the temple, where the ark of God was. There he  ministered before the Lord under Eli.

Because of his dedication to the Lord, Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men.

The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord. The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word (1 Samuel 3: 19-21).

WHY DID THE SONS OF ELI, THE HIGH PRIEST, NOT HAVE THE FAVOR OF GOD?

Eli lived at Shiloh in a dwelling adjoining the Tabernacle. He was a good and pure man but weak and indecisive.

The Scripture informs us that the sons of Eli were wicked and did not have any regard for the Lord. They treated the Lord’s offering with contempt (1 Samuel 2: 12-16).

The sons of Eli also slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting (1 Samuel 2: 22).

Eli rebuked his sons about their terrible behavior but they did not listen to their father’s rebuke.

His sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were killed in battle with the Philistines and the ark of God was captured (1 Samuel 4: 17).  When Eli was informed about his sons and the ark, he fell off the chair on which he was sitting. He was old and heavy and died from a broken neck.

WHAT LED TO SAMUEL RECOGNIZING GOD’S CALL?

During the priesthood of Eli the word of the Lord was rare and there were not many visions.

When Samuel’s mother gave him over to the Lord, the boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. One night as Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel, thinking that it was Eli who had called him, answered. But Eli said to Samuel that he did not call him. Eli asked him to go back and lie down.

The Lord called Samuel a second and third time and the same thing happened. He answered and went to Eli. On the third occasion Eli realized that it was the Lord who was calling Samuel. Eli asked Samuel to go back and lie down and if he calls again, say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3: 9).

Samuel did as Eli had asked him. The Lord came and stood in the presence of Samuel and called, Samuel! Samuel’  (1 Samuel 3: 10).

Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening’ (1 Samuel 3: 10).

The Lord said to Samuel, See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears it tingle. At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons made themselves contemptible, and he failed to restrain them. Therefore, I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering’ (1 Samuel 3: 11-14).

WHAT WAS UNIQUE ABOUT SAMUEL’S BOYHOOD?

Samuel’s mother promised God that if he gave her a son that she would give him back to the Lord. And that was exactly what she did. When the child was weaned his mother took him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. She said, So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord. Samuel remained in the house of the Lord and worshiped there (1 Samuel 1: 28).

HOW DID THE BIRTH OF SAMUEL COME ABOUT?

Hannah, one of Elkanah’s wives, was barren. On one occasion when the family was in the temple, Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord. She said to God that if he would give her a son she would give him back to the Lord for all the days of his  life.

Eli, the priest, who was sitting on a chair nearby observed Hannah’s lips moving but did not hear any words. The priest thought that she was drunk and said to her, How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine (1 Sam. 1: 14).

Hannah said to him that she was not drunk but she was pouring out her soul to the Lord. Eli said to her, Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him (1 Samuel 1: 17).

After that they went back to their home in Ramah. Elkanah had sex with Hannah and the Lord remembered her. In the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, Because I asked the Lord for him (1 Samuel 1: 20).

HOW DID ELKANAH SHOW HIS LOVE FOR HANNAH?

Elkanah had two wives, one was Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children but Hannah did not have any. Year after year Elkanah went up to worship and sacrifice to the Lord at Shiloh.

Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, Peninnah provoked her till she wept. As a result Hannah would not eat. Her husband, Elkanah, would say to her, ‘Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons’  (1 Samuel 1: 8).

Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb (1 Samuel 1: 4-5).

HOW DID GOD USE A GENTILE WOMAN, A MOABITESS, TO FIGURE IN THE ANCESTRY OF JESUS?

The Moabites were idol worshippers. This nation came from Moab, the son of the older daughter of Lot from a sexual affair with her father whom she made drunk. But there is a recorded good that came from that nation.

Ruth was a Moabitess. She became the daughter-in-law of Naomi, who was an Ephrathite from Bethlehem, Judah. Naomi and her husband, along with their two sons, went to live in Moab when there was a famine in Bethlehem. Ruth was married to one of Naomi’s sons who later died. Naomi’s husband and her other son died as well (Ruth 1: 1-5).

Ruth accompanied her mother-in-law to Bethlehem when the famine was over (Ruth 1: 6-7).

Ruth was married to Boaz and their son’s name was Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse. Jesse was the father of David (Ruth 4: 13-21).

So God used Ruth, a Moabitess, to figure in the ancestry of JESUS, by becoming the great grandmother of King David.

GOD CAN USE YOU FOR HIS PURPOSE. PLEASE BE FAITHFUL TO HIS CALL (Prov. 3: 5-6).

All the way my Savior leads me –

What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt His tender mercy,

Who through life has been my Guide?

WHAT WAS THE SOURCE AND SECRET OF SAMSON’S STRENGTH?

The source of Samson’s strength was God. Whenever the Holy Spirit came upon him, he was able to do great exploits (Judges 14: 6, 19; 15: 14-15; 16: 29-30).

The secret of Samson’s strength was his hair.

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife he said to her that no razor must be used on her son’s hair because the boy is to be a Nazarite, set apart to God from birth.

After many days, Delilah was able to get Samson to reveal to her the secret of his great strength. So he told her everything. ‘No razor has ever been used on my had,’ he said, ‘because I have been a Nazarite set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man’ (Judges 16: 17).

Having found out the secret of Samson’s strength, Delilah betrayed him to the rulers of the Philistines. Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him (Judges 16: 19).

Delilah called out to Samson saying that the Philistines were upon him. He awoke and thinking that he could take care of the situation went out to the Philistines. But Samson did not know that the Lord had left him. The Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes. They bound him with bronze shackles and took him to prison.
