    Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what peace is mine,
    leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, ( on Jesus) leaning, ( on Jesus)
    Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, ( on Jesus) leaning, ( on Jesus)
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
Oh, how bright the path grows from day
    to day,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, ( on Jesus) leaning, ( on Jesus)
    Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, ( on Jesus) leaning, ( on Jesus)
    Leaning on the everlasting arms

What have I to dread, what have I to
    fear,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so
    near,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, ( on Jesus) leaning, ( on Jesus)
    Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, ( on Jesus) leaning, ( on Jesus)
    Leaning on the everlasting arms

My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,

but God remains the strength of my heart; He is mine forever.

    In Jesus . . .
      my debt is paid,
      my sins are forgiven,
      my soul is saved,
      hell is vanquished,
      heaven is opened,
      eternity is made mine!

O Holy Spirit, deepen in me these
    saving lessons. Write them upon
my heart, that my walk be . . .
      sin-loathing,
      sin-fleeing,
      Christ-loving.

    Seek His Strength

Seek the Lord, and His strength: seek His face evermore.
    PSALMS 105:4

O JESUS CHRIST, grow Thou in me,
    And all things else recede;
My heart be daily nearer Thee,
    From sin be daily freed.

Make this poor self grow less and less,
    Be Thou my life and aim;
Oh, make me daily, through Thy grace,
    More worthy of Thy name.

Your sins, and errors, and follies

(William S. Plumer, "The Rock of Our Salvation" 1867)

Jesus knows your sins, and errors, and follies--but
He still loves you tenderly! Your weakness affords Him
a welcome opportunity to show pity. There are heights,
and depths, and lengths, and breadths of mercy in Christ
--beyond all human necessities, miseries, and sins!
He has helped myriads to glory--who were as weak, as
unworthy, as desponding as any of us! His mercies are . . .
      shoreless,
      fathomless,
      eternal,
      unchangeable!

Some humble child of God may say, "I have made but
poor progress. I have sore troubles, "fears within, and
fightings without." Let such remember, that whatever
makes us humble is good for us. Humility is the most
lovely of graces. Without it, there is no real progress
heavenward. It is a precious token of God's regard to
us, that He so deals with us, as to . . .
      destroy our carnal security,
      mortify our pride,
make us loathe and abhor ourselves,
and yet gives us a relish for spiritual enjoyments,
and leads us to seek them above all other things.

He is a growing Christian, to whom Christ is more and
more precious. As our estimate of Christ rises--our
estimate of ourselves necessarily becomes lower. To
believers, Christ is everything. He is all their salvation.

If we are guilty, He has atoned.

If we are vile, He is worthy.

If we are nothing, He is all in all.

To be in Christ is heaven begun! To be with
Christ and like Christ is heaven completed!

    He . . .
      to whom Christ is precious,
to whom the word of God is sweeter than honey,
      to whom sin is odious,
to whom secret devotion is a delight,
who strives to honor his Master in his life,
who regards the world as a broken idol
--has passed from death unto life.

    Tell Them
    -(Author Unknown)

Some 14 years ago, I stood watching my university students file into the classroom for our opening session in the theology of faith.

That was the day I first saw Tommy. He was combing his hair, which hung six inches below his shoulders. My quick judgment wrote him off as strange – very strange.

Tommy turned out to be my biggest challenge. He constantly objected to or smirked at the possibility of an unconditionally loving God. When he turned in his final exam at the end of the course, he asked in a slightly cynical tone, "Do you think I'll ever find God?" "No," I said emphatically. "Oh," he responded. "I thought that was the product you were pushing."

I let him get five steps from the door and then called out. "I don't think you'll ever find Him, but I am certain He will find you." Tommy shrugged and left. I felt slightly disappointed that he had missed my clever line.

Later I heard that Tommy had graduated, and I was grateful for that. Then came a sad report: Tommy had terminal cancer. Before I could search him out, he came to me. When he walked into my office, his body was badly wasted, and his long hair had fallen out because of chemotherapy. But his eyes were bright and his voice, for the first time, was firm.

"Tommy! I've thought about you so often. I heard you were very sick," I blurted out.

"Oh, yes, very sick. I have cancer. It's a matter of weeks."

    "Can you talk about it?"

"Sure. What would you like to know?"

"What's it like to be only 24 and know that you're dying?"

"It could be worse," he told me, "like being 50 and thinking that drinking booze, seducing women and making money are the real 'biggies' in life."

Then he told me why he had come.

"It was something you said to me on the last day of class. I asked if you thought I would ever find God, and you said no, which surprised me. Then you said, 'But He will find you.' I thought about that a lot, even though my search for God was hardly intense at that time. But when the doctors removed a lump from my groin and told me that it was malignant, I got serious about locating God. And when the malignancy spread into my vital organs, I really began banging against the bronze doors of heaven. But nothing happened. Well, one day I woke up, and instead of my desperate attempts to get some kind of message, I just quit. I decided I didn't really care about God, an afterlife, or anything like that. I decided to spend what time I had left doing something more important. I thought about you and something else you had said: 'The essential sadness is to go through life without loving. But it would be almost equally sad to leave this world without ever telling those you loved that you loved them.' So I began with the hardest one: my dad."

Tommy's father had been reading the newspaper when his son approached him.

"Dad, I would like to talk with you."

    "Well, talk."

    "I mean, it's really important."

The newspaper came down three slow inches.

    "What is it?"

"Dad, I love you. I just wanted you to know that."

Tommy smiled at me as he recounted the moment. "The newspaper fluttered to the floor. Then my father did two things I couldn't remember him doing before. He cried and he hugged me. And we talked all night, even though he had to go to work the next morning.

"It was easier with my mother and little brother," Tommy continued. "They cried with me, and we hugged one another, and shared the things we had been keeping secret for so long. Here I was, in the shadow of death, and I was just beginning to open up to all the people I had actually been close to.

"Then one day I turned around and God was there. He didn't come to me when I pleaded with Him. Apparently He does things in His own way and at His own hour. The important thing is that you were right. He found me even after I stopped looking for Him."

"Tommy," I added, "could I ask you a favor? Would you come to my theology-of-faith course and tell my students what you told me?"

Though we scheduled a date, he never made it. Of course, his life was not really ended by his death, only changed. He made the great step from faith into vision. He found a life far more beautiful than the eye of humanity has ever seen or the mind ever imagined.

Before he died, we talked one last time. "I'm not going to make it to your class," he said. "I know, Tommy."

"Will you tell them for me? Will you . . . tell the whole world for me?"

"I will, Tommy. I'll tell them."

"Christ died for the ungodly." Romans 5:6

    O what a melting consideration is this, that . . .
      out of Christ's agony--comes our victory;
      out of His condemnation--comes our justification;
      out of His pain--comes our ease;
      out of His stripes--comes our healing;
      out of His gall and vinegar--comes our honey;
      out of His curse--comes our blessing;
      out of His crown of thorns--comes our crown of glory;
out of His death--comes our life!

"Hearts must be harder than the rocks--if the love
and death of Christ do not move them!"

If Jesus came to your house

If Jesus came to your house
To spend some time with you,
    If He came unexpected,
    I wonder what you'd do.

Oh, I know you'd give your nicest room
    To such an honored guest
And all the food you'd give to Him
    Would be the very best.

And you would keep assuring Him
You're glad to have Him there--
That serving Him in your home
    Is joy beyond compare.

But when you saw Him coming,
Would you meet Him at the door
    With arms outstretched in welcome
    To your heavenly visitor?

Or would you have to change your clothes
    Before you let Him in
    Or hide some magazines
And put the Bible where they'd been

Would you hide your worldly music
and put some hymn books out?
Could you let Jesus walk right
in, or would you rush about?

And I wonder - if the Saviour
spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing, the
    things you always do?

Would you go right on saying, the
    things you always say?
Or would life for you continue
as it does from day to day?

Would you take Jesus with you
    everywhere you go?
Or would you maybe change your
plans for just a day or so?

Would you be glad to have Him
    meet your closest friends?
Or would you hope they stay away,
    until His visit ends?

Would you be glad to have Him
    stay forever on and on?
Or would you sigh with great
relief when He at last was gone?

It might be interesting to know,
the things that you would do,
If Jesus came in person, to spend
    some time with you.

Jesus said unto him, "`Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.'   This is the first and great commandment.

True testimony is the best.  Below is one from my very own Aunt Violet.

I just wanted to tell you what,'s been going on with me.  And what a Great God we have.  I was mowing my grass on July 3.  In the back yard there was a dog leash attached to the apple tree inn the back yard.  I had taken it and wrapped it up in the tree.  The end was hanging down about l8 inches off the ground and I knew I could mow under it with no problem,   As I passed by it the loop on the end of the leash lapped around the ball of my foot and I didn`t realize it until it tightened.  I was going forward in 3rd gear full speed.  I tried to put the brake on and screaming for Jesus to help me all the same time.  Suddenly  the lawnmower went into reverse and I started backing up for no logical reason. I thought my ankle was being broken.  I was in serve pain.  I wasn`t sure I could walk.  I drove the lawnmower over to the back steps and got off.  To my suprise nothing was broken.  Praise God.  I immediately went into the house.  Put ice packs on my ankle and twisted knee.  Called my best friend to pray.  The swelling has almost gone down .  I am a little uncomfortable when I try to rest and still limping some but Praise God,  I know he is real.  And most of all he is caring for me.  I love you all.  Mark me up as a nut if you want to but that`s OK.  But I know who I am in Christ Jesus.  I am his child.  Love Violet Timms

God goes beyond answered prayer....He gives us Blessed Assurance of Peace of mind...

Joseph, our 9 year old, came down sick a couple of Saturdays ago. Started out as a stomachache, nausea, and no appetite. As time progressed, pain increased. We initially thought it was a virus...one had been going around at the time. Karen, my wife, and I each said our private little prayers for healing for Joe.

Around about 9:30, Karen remembered some similar symptoms with the onset of her diabetes and she became concerned. She checked Joe's ketones and they were high...an indication of possible diabetes. We immediately went to our knees in prayer. We sought strength and confidence in God's sovereignty and mercy. Karen did what she could to comfort Joe with hopes that it was indeed a virus and it would pass but the pain continued to get worse. Joe slept fitfully. I stayed up till about 1 Sunday morning, Karen spelled me and I went to bed hoping to get enough sleep to successfully pull off the scheduled TV production that morning at our church (I am one of 2 producers for our church TV ministries). But...

Karen woke me at 2:30 and said she thought we should go straight to the emergency room because she thought it might be appendicitis. I quickly dressed and we loaded up poor Joe in the car and rushed to the hospital.

Ya know...God is so incredibly "in charge" and not one single solitary detail is overlooked. It is difficult at best to go to a strange place for help (We avoid the hospital every chance we get! LOL), but to turn one's child over to strangers, as it were, for help is really a challenge. You moms know exactly what I'm talking about without having to experience it. Well...God in His sovereignty, had already prepared the way. The nurse in charge of the ER was not just any nurse. She was someone from our church. And she was not just someone from our church, but one of our elder's daughters. Not only that, but she is a very dear friend whose brother is also on the production crew. Not only that, she was not too long ago one of Joe's teachers at church and he has a special place in his heart for this young lady. Words will never describe the huge weight that was lifted off our backs when we saw Mariah's face in that ER. We knew immediately that God was LARGE AND IN CHARGE and we could rest in Him.

Tests proved that appendicitis was the problem. By 9:15, it was all over. I did make it to the first (of 3) service and made production notes and left for my compatriot who graciously filled in for me for the production so I could hustle back to the hospital. The surgery, post surgery, and recovery went perfectly in the way that only God Himself could orchestrate.

He is indeed sovereign. He is indeed merciful. He is indeed God.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

    Amen and amen.

    Love in the Home
If I live in a house of spotless beauty with everthing in its place, but have not love, I am a housekeeper--not a homemaker.

If I have time for waxing, polishing, and decorative achievements, but have not love, my children learn cleanliness--not godliness.

Love leaves the dust in search of a child's laugh. Love smiles at the tiny fingerprints on a newly cleaned window.

Love wipes away the tears before it wipes up the spilled milk. Love picks up the child before it picks up the toys.

Love is present through the trials. Love reprimands, reproves, and is responsive. Love crawls with the baby, walks with the toddler, runs with the child, then stands aside to let the youth walk into adulthood.

Love is the key that opens salvation's message to a child's heart.

Before I became a mother I took glory in my house of perfection. Now I glory in God's perfection of my child. As a mother, there is much I must teach my child, but the greatest of all is love.

Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often?
When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror. The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand.
Bob? Bob from Church? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow.

Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform.
"Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this."
    "Hello, Jack." No smile.
"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids."
"Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good.
"I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit -just this once."
Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?" "I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct ." Ouch. This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics.

    "What'd you clock me at?"
"Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?"
"Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.
    "Please, Jack, in the car"
Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window.
The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad.
Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?
Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.

"Thanks." Jack could not quite keep the sneer out of his voice.
Bob returned to his police car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost?

Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke?
Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:
"Dear Jack, Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it- a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters, all three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until Heaven before I can ever hug her again.
A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful, Jack, my son is all I have left."

    "Bob"
Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived.
Life is precious. Handle with care. This is an important message; please pass it along to your friends. Drive safely and carefully. Remember, cars are not the only things recalled by their maker.
"May today there be peace within you. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

    The Never Ending Call

The boy walked along the ocean shore... trying not to stray.
He looked up to his Father saying "Dad I want to play."
His Father looked upon him, with love showing in his eyes.
"Do what you want to, my son... but do not leave my side."
"I would never leave you daddy, I love you way too much."
But the boy took a step away, out of his fathers range of touch.
He walked through the surf, The waves tickling one toe.
"If I take one more step in... " he thought "Father will never know."
His father called out to him, "Son, to me remain true."
The boy thought with glee... "At the moment I don't need you."
His Father felt a sadness, But he held his tongue.
Sometimes lessons need to be learned... even when so young.
The boy stepped out a little further... the water covering his waist.
His Father spoke with urgency... his father spoke with haste.
"My Son come Back to me," he said "The day is almost done."
Not yet, Dad," the boy yelled, "I'm having too much fun!"
But the Boy did not have his fathers sight... So he could not tell...
The Tide was coming in fast... There would be no time to yell.
"Father!" he tried to scream As the water covered his head.
"I need you now daddy!" was what the boy had said.
And in a single instant his father was by his side.
"I thought you left me daddy... I thought you went to hide."
The Father looked upon his son... a tear streaming down his cheek.
The Boy looked upon his father. and cried the sobs of the meek.
"I would never leave you son... For I love you just the same."
"I was only waiting... for you to call upon my name."

    From the mouth of babes....

A four year old was at the pediatrician for a check up. As the doctor looked down her ears with an otoscope, he asked, "Do you think I'll find Big Bird in here?" The little girl stayed silent. Next, the doctor took a tongue depressor and looked down her throat. He asked, "Do you think I'll find the Cookie Monster down there?" Again, the little girl was silent. Then the doctor put a stethoscope to her chest. As he listened to her heart beat, he asked, "Do you think I'll hear Barney in there?" "Oh, no!" the little girl replied. "Jesus is in my heart. Barney's on my underpants."

    Abortion

Would you consider abortion in the following situations?

    1. There's a preacher and wife who are very, very, poor. They already have 14 kids. Now she finds out she's pregnant with her 15th. They're living in tremendous poverty. Considering their poverty, and the excessive world population, would you consider recommending she get an abortion?

    2. The father is sick with sniffles, the mother has TB. They have 4 children. 1st is blind, 2nd is dead, 3rd is deaf, 4th has TB. She finds she's pregnant again. Given the extreme situation, would you consider recommending abortion?

    3. A white man raped a 13 year old black girl and she got pregnant. If you were her parents, would you consider recommending abortion?

    4. A teenage girl is pregnant. She's not married. Her fiance is not the father of the baby, and he's very upset. Would you consider recommending abortion?

In the first case, you have just killed John Wesley. One of the great evangelists in the 19th century.

In the second case, you have killed Beethoven.

In the third case, you have killed Ethel Waters, the great black gospel singer.

If you said yes to the fourth case, you have just declared the murder of Jesus Christ!

The Seven Wonders of the World

A group of students were asked to list what they
thought were the present "Seven Wonders of the World."
Though there were some disagreements, the following
    received the most votes:

    1. Egypt's Great Pyramids
    2. Taj Mahal
    3. Grand Canyon
    4. Panama Canal
    5. Empire State Building
    6. St. Peter's Basilica
    7. China's Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one
student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked
the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The
girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up
my mind because there were so many."

The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and
maybe we can help. "The girl hesitated, then read, "I
think the 'Seven Wonders of the World' are:

    1. To See
    2. To Hear
    3. To Touch
    4. To Taste
    5. To Feel
    6. To Laugh
    7. And to Love.

The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.
The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that
we take for granted are truly wondrous!

A gentle reminder that the most precious things in
life cannot be built by hand or bought by man.

    The Empty Chair

A man's daughter had asked the local pastor to come and pray with her father. When the pastor arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows and an empty chair beside his bed. The priest assumed that the old fellow had been informed of his visit. "I guess you were expecting me," he said.

    "No, who are you?"

"I'm the new associate at your local church," the pastor replied. "When I saw the empty chair, I figured you knew I was going to show up."

"Oh yeah, the chair," said the bedridden man. "Would you mind closing the door?"

Puzzled, the pastor shut the door.

"I've never told anyone this, not even my daughter," said the man. "But all of my life I have never known how to pray. At church I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer, but it always went right over my head.."

"I abandoned any attempt at prayer," the old man continued, "until one day about four years ago my best friend said to me, 'Joe, prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here's what I suggest. Sit down on a chair, place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It's not spooky because he promised, 'I'll be with you always.' Then just speak to him and listen in the same way you're doing with me right now."

"So, I tried it and I've liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I'm careful, though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she'd either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm."

The pastor was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the old guy to continue on the journey. Then he prayed with him, and returned to the church.

Two nights later the daughter called to tell the pastor that her daddy had died that afternoon.

"Did he seem to die in peace?" he asked.

"Yes, when I left the house around two o'clock, he called me over to his bedside, told me one of his corny jokes, and kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, I found him dead. But there was something strange, In fact, beyond strange--kinda weird. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on a chair beside the bed."

    Two Boxes

I have in my hands two boxes
which God gave me to hold
he said, "put all your sorrows in the black
and all your joys in the gold

I heeded his words, and in the two boxes
both my joys and sorrows I store
but though the gold became heavier each day
the black was as light as before

with curiosity I opened the black
I wanted to find out why
and I saw in the base of the box a hole
which my sorrows had fallen out by

I showed the hole to God, and mused aloud,
I wonder where my sorrows could be
he smiled a gentle smile at me
my child they're all here with me

I asked, "God, why give me the boxes,
why the gold and black with the hole?"
"My child the gold is for you to count your blessings,
the black is for you to let go."

What if God couldn't take the time to bless us today because we couldn't take the time to thank Him yesterday?

What if God decided to stop leading us tomorrow because we didn't follow Him today?

What if we never saw another flower bloom because we grumbled when God sent the rain?

What if God didn't walk with us today because we failed to recognize it as His day?

What if God took away his messge because we failed to listen to the messenger?

What if God didn't send His only begotten Son because He wanted us to be prepared to pay the price for sin?

What if the door to the church was closed because we did not open the door of our heart?

What if God stopped loving a caring for us because we failed to love and care for others?

What if God would not hear us today because we would not listen to him yesterday?

What if God answered our prayers the way we answer His call to service?

What if God met our needs the way we give Him our lives?

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you,

Jesus Christ and the American G.I.

    One died for your soul,

    the other for your freedom.

    Let's thank them both.

Malachi 3:3 says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."
This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.
One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.
That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.
As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.
The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says:  "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."  She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.
The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?"
He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it"
If today you are feeling heat of  the fire, remember that God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.
