THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD-IN THE WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST

There is no need to speculate whether the plans of the Levitical priesthood to kill Jesus Christ came at the spur of the moment for it did not. They knew better than anyone the prophecies and signs of His coming: Mat 2:1-6.

When Herod the king slaughtered infants of a certain age to kill the promised Messiah in order to keep from losing his kingdom, the Bible is silent here as to whether the Levitical priesthood was either in opposition or collusion with Him.

It would be later, that the Bible in the words of Jesus Christ Himself would reveal in great detail that the Levitical priesthood had a long violent history of killing off any perceived opposition to their rule, although they knew God planned the obsolescence of their ministry to replace it with the better eternal Messianic one in the person of the Christ.

Jesus Christ reveals that the Levitical priesthood continued the wicked tradition of their forefathers in killing off anyone sent from God to tell the people about the promised Messiah to come. They had no compunction against killing the Messiah Himself, just as Herod the king had tried and failed to do. They were intent on succeeding where Herod failed.  

Jesus again warned the people, it remains the same now about the Levitical priesthood, “the husbandmen”: Luk 20: 9Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. 10And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. 11And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. 12And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. 13Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. 14But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. 15So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? 16He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

17And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

Warning to all enemies against Jesus Christ-opposition to Him is futile.

18Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD-IN THE WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST

The depths of the depravity of the Levitical priesthood, their total ruin in not having a scrap of true righteousness, their making up their own law while totally disregarding obeying the Law of God is clearly shown when Judas Iscariot knocked on their door. When Judas Knocked, the devil was with him occupying his heart. When Judas Iscariot showed up seeking to betray Jesus Christ whom they all knew was innocent, they knew that under the Law they should have put Judas Iscariot to death but this is what they did instead: Mark 14:10And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them. 11And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

They were no better than Judas Iscariot seeing that they were the ones who had put a bounty on the head of Jesus Christ in the first place.

Yes, indeed, the Levitical priesthood itself was looking for false witnesses against Jesus Christ; although they knew anyone doing these things were to be condemned to death for bearing false witness against anyone:  Mat 26:59 - Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

The penalty for false witness under the Law: Deu 19:16 - If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;

Deu 19:19 - Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

Deu 19:21 - And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

There was not the slightest chance that the Levitical priesthood would actually apply the Law to themselves. Run!!! Run!!! Do not walk away from anyone unrepentantly patterning themselves in part or in whole after the Levitical priesthood of the Law of Moses-RUN!!!

THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD-IN THE WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST

The common people gladly heard Jesus Christ. However, the Levitical priesthood hated Jesus. They envied His power, stalked Him, lied on Him, insulted and slandered Him trying to ruin, overthrow His ministry and destroy His reputation and credibility with the common people. Yet Jesus showed the Levitical priesthood mercy in not holding back the eternal truth from them:

Jhn 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

The Levitical priesthood challenged the authority of Jesus at every turn. Nevertheless, Jesus even in anger always in perfect control, struck back without fear, boldly exposing them for the sham they had become, a useless empty greedy cabal of foolish blind guides; cruel, brutal, corrupt, purveyors of false doctrines, false righteousness gleaned in vain from the useless washings of pots and pans pertaining to outer cleanliness only; while willfully neglecting true inner spiritual cleanliness from obedience to God in doing His will and showing mercy and care for the people.

They had put murder on the table to get rid of Him, and now the table was fully dressed and set with plates and utensils.  Jhn 11:47Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation. 52

THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD-IN THE WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST

Mat 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Extortion: the act of plundering, robbery. To plunder spoil.

Excess: want of self-control, incontinence, intemperance.

Jesus knew who and what the Levitical priesthood was capable of and the Levitical priesthood knew who and what Jesus is. Jesus Christ ramps up His mega wattage assessment and condemnation of the Levitical priesthood:

Jhn 8:37 - I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. Jhn 8:40 - But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

Jhn 8:44 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

There can be no doubt that Jesus Christ still has the same condemnation for anyone knowingly, unrepentantly promoting the Levitical priesthood above, equal to or in place of His everlasting priesthood, composed of all nations that believe in Him.

THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD IN THE WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST

We continue with this study with an addition to its title of “IN THE WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST” that we should be fully appraised that it is not a flawed opinion of just a man who has critiqued the Levitical priesthood, but Jesus Christ who has examined it in eternal truth and found it wanting. Jesus Christ has the absolute authority to do so, and it is impossible for God to lie.

The Levitical priesthood saw Jesus, the great promised Jewish Messiah for all who will believe as a usurper of the kingdom they felt rightfully belonged to them and not God.

It is great error for anyone to hold forth the Levitical priesthood as an example to follow or pattern themselves after in any manner. Jesus Christ had little good to say about the Levitical priesthood. His long list of scathing condemnation and disapproval of them should totally prevent anyone else from doing so.  Jesus said of them: Mat 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

The Levitical priesthood serves as an example of a ministry gone horribly wrong off the charts, totally derailed in that they became everything a ministry should never be: greedy, cruel, merciless, leading people away from instead of to God, substituting their own man- made traditions over the word of God, willing to kill any body that threatened their power, authority and money etc.

Jesus in His own words,  completely shreds and blows the cover off of the Levitical priesthood to reveal its tawdry hypocrisy, callousness, depravity, and rebellion against God.

Jesus well understood the depths of the corruption and degeneration of the Levitical priesthood. He well knew they would murder anyone who posed a threat to their priesthood, even those sent to them from God Himself. In every sense they knowingly were fighting against God Himself.

Jesus said:

 Mat 23:34 - Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:35 - That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

Just as Cain killed Abel in anger because Abel offered to God a better more acceptable sacrifice than the rejected sacrifice of Cain, the Levitical priesthood would seek to kill Jesus Christ because Jesus Christ is the surpreme only eternal, final, finished and complete sacrifice acceptable to God to make atonement for all sins for all time, for everyone who believes in Him. The sinless sacrifice of Jesus Christ would permanently end and make the Levitical priesthood and their sacrifices for sins forever obsolete- un-necessary and never accepted anymore by God for all eternity. Amen, world without end.

THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD

It is shocking that some try to imitate the Levitical priesthood of the Law, in tithing, in “ecumenical clothing” calling themselves “men of the cloth”.  Among these imitators are some who falsely claim to have the power and authority to forgive men of their sins. In some cases, they falsely offer men forgiveness on the basis of giving them various “sacrifices” to gain forgiveness from God.

Jesus Christ had nothing good to say about the Levitical priesthood. Throughout scripture and here throughout His earthly ministry Jesus Christ gives a concise critique, assessment and evaluation of the failed Levitical priesthood exposing that it had degenerated into a sham, corrupt, rebellious, greedy and cruel ministry serving itself only:

Jesus said:  Mark 7:6He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Mark 7: 7Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

Mark 7:9And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Mark 7: 13Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

Jesus exposes the true nature of the actions of the Levitical priesthood- defiled hearts. Mark 7: 14And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: 15There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. 16If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

Mark 7: 21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

God’s handwriting was on the wall. The signs of the end of the Levitical priesthood was at hand as long prophesied. The Messianic promise was at the door, the Messiah, the real eternal Saviour and high priest had come to town. Instead of rejoicing at the eternal permanent coming new covenant, the Levitical priesthood had just this one thought in mind-how to prevent it from ever happening so that they could retain their power, authority and rule.

THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD

Let us keep in mind as we continue this study that the first believers were Jewish: Rom 11:1 - I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. There is no condemnation of the Israel intended here in any way. The intent is to show that neither the forgiveness of sins nor salvation can be gained through the Levitical priesthood. They have no share in part or whole as a ministry through which men can be forgiven of sins and be saved. Jesus Christ alone is the sole eternal appointed Saviour and High Priest for all who will believe in and on Him.

Let us continue to look further into the hard-core degeneracy of the Levitical priesthood. They no longer cared for the widows and others as God commanded. They had instead tricked this poor widow into believing she had to give instead of receive from the Levitical priesthood.

Even today, we find derived through them a pernicious and calloused lack of compassion to provide any subsidy to the poor out of the idea that poor people should give and not be given “something for nothing”.

There is nothing of praise, from Jesus for the sacrificial giving of the poor widow. This is an example of the merciless greed of the Levitical priesthood who oppressed and stooped to drain even the poor widow of what little she had.

How widows were to be treated under the Law: Widows were not required by God to pay a tithe, instead they along with the fatherless, poor, and strangers were to receive a portion of the tithes that was given to the Levitical priesthood as commanded by God.

The only exception was that all had to bring a sacrifice to the priests to make an atonement for themselves after their confession of sin: Exo 30:15 - The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

Some try to use the above verse to defend demanding a tithe from the poor. However, this is error seeing that the Levitical priesthood provided income from the poor as commanded by God. What the poor gave was through the continual largess of a portion of the tithe.

Deu 26:12 - When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled;…
