Jesus and the woman at the well
John 4 - Jesus and his disciples travel to Galilee but unlike most Jews who avoided Samaria at ALL cost, yet Jesus chose to go through Samaria. He sent his disciples for food while he sat by a well. And if it wasn't bad enough that he went through Samaria he choose to speak to a Samaritan... and a woman no less. (a major no no!). He shocked the woman by speaking to her and asking for water.
When she ask why he would talk to her a Samaritan woman for a drink his answer is more of a riddle. "If you knew who was speaking to you, you would be asking me for a drink"
This confused her but yet, when Jesus asks her to get her husband she responds with the truth. "I don't have a husband." Then Jesus tells her she's answered correctly she has had 5 husbands and the man she was living with was not her husband. At that she begins to understand this is not an ordinary Jew.
Jesus picks unlikely people to touch. When the Samaritan woman went to the well that day she didn't expect to encounter the Living God.
Each one of us could be the Samaritan woman... some dark secret but yet when we least expect it we can encounter the one that gives us the living water.
In our Adult Bible Fellowship classes we are studying the book of John and this past Sunday we looked at the woman at the well. I saw something that I hadn't seen before. One of our class mentioned about how physical needs often mirror spiritual needs. All of us know we should drink plenty of water to stay healthy... but think about Jesus offers the living water so we never thirst again... but do we only drink once??? Or should we drink daily!?!?!?!
