When Jacob went from the land of Canaan to Paddan Aram (Mesopotamia) he lived with his uncle, Laban. Jacob fell in love with his cousin, Rachel, and sought permission from his uncle to marry her.

The wedding was arranged and the time came. But instead of giving his daughter Rachel, Laban gave his daughter Leah. The next morning, Jacob realized that he was tricked by his uncle. He confronted his uncle. His uncle responded, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one. Finish out this daughter’s bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work” (Gen. 29: 26-27).

Jacob was married to Rachel at a later time.

But through Judah, Leah’s son, the ancestry of Jesus is traced (Matt. 1: 3-16).

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Rom. 8: 28).

WHAT MOTIVATED PHARAOH, THE EGYPTIAN RULER OF EGYPT, TO PLACE JOSEPH, AN ISRAELITE, IN CHARGE OF HIS PALACE AND THE WHOLE LAND OF EGYPT?

God enabled Joseph to give the interpretation of the dreams of both the cupbearer and the baker who served in Pharaoh’s palace when they were in the same prison as himself. As a result Joseph had an audience with Pharaoh. Joseph was able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams which bothered him greatly.

Based on Joseph’s interpretation, he advised Pharaoh “to look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt” (Gen. 41: 33). The plan was accepted by Pharaoh and all of his officials.

Pharaoh asked them “can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God” (Gen. 41: 38). So Pharaoh placed Joseph in charge of his palace and the whole land of Egypt.

I believe that Pharaoh’s decision was motivated by the Holy Spirit because God had a plan for Joseph and the Israelites. God had said to Abraham, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions” (Gen. 15: 13-14).

Is it not strange that Pharaoh, an unbeliever, would recognize that Joseph’s ability to interpret his dreams and advice him was a gift from God? You see God can use an unbeliever to further his plans. Do you remember how God used King Cyrus, an unbeliever, to give the necessary assistance to the returning exiles (Isa. 45: 1-7).

God has a plan for your life. As he gifted Joseph, he can gift you and use you for his glory.

WHAT INCIDENTS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR JOSEPH'S AUDIENCE WITH PHARAOH?

Pharaoh became angry with two of his officials, his cupbearer and his baker. They were put into prison where Joseph was confined.  After they were in prison for some time they both had a dream on the same night. Each dream had a meaning of its own. The next morning when Joseph came to them he realized that something was wrong. They both looked dejected.  Joseph inquired of them about their sadness. They informed him about their dream and stated that there was no one to interpret them.

Joseph asked them to tell him their dreams because God knows their meaning. They related their dreams to Joseph. Joseph informed the cupbearer that he was going to be restored to his position. But Joseph had bad news for the baker. He was told that Pharaoh would put him to death.

The cupbearer was restored to his position and the baker was hanged. Joseph’s interpretations were fulfilled.

Joseph had asked the cupbearer to mention him to Pharaoh so that he could be released from prison.

The cupbearer forgot about Joseph. But two years later Pharaoh had two dreams. He sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt but no one was able to interpret the dreams. The cupbearer remembered Joseph at that point and mentioned him to Pharaoh. He explained that the baker and himself had dreams and Joseph interpreted them. Joseph’s interpretations turned out to be true.

    Pharaoh sent for Joseph.

PLEASE READ THE COMPLETE STORY in the Book of Genesis, chapters forty and forty-one.

Joseph showed kindness and concern for the cupbearer and the cupbearer remembered him at a significant time. But everything had to wait for God’s timing.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Prov. 3: 5-6).

HOW DID JOSEPH SHOW HIMSELF TO BE A GODLY PERSON?

Joseph was a very young man when he was sold into slavery. The Bible records that he was well-built and handsome. He was placed in charge of Potiphar’s household because Potiphar saw that the Lord was with him. God gave Joseph success in everything he did (Gen. 39: 1-3).

Potiphar’s wife desired to have a sexual relationship with Joseph but he refused. He said, “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God? But Potiphar’s wife did not give up. She plotted to seduce him but he escaped. Because she felt rejected she lied to her husband concerning Joseph. She said to her husband, “He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed” (Gen. 39: 6-14).

This incident resulted in Joseph going into prison. But in prison his godly behaviour resulted in his gaining favor with the prison warden and he was given great responsibility. His godly character in dealing with Potiphar’s wife and his circumstances in prison eventually led to his elevation as second only to Pharaoh.

His godly character showed greatly when he revealed himself to his brothers and forgave them for their “unforgivable action” (selling him into slavery). They volunteered to be his slaves. “We are your slaves” (Gen. 50: 18). Joseph said to them, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Gen. 50: 20).

Joseph is regarded as an Old Testament type of Christ because of his godly character. He repaid good for evil. He gave thanks to God in all circumstances.

Joseph is an ideal model for us. Will you pattern your behavior after his? God will grant you favor as he granted favor to Joseph. The Lord gave him success in everything he did ((Gen. 39: 3).

WHAT DID JOSEPH PROPHESY ABOUT THE ISRAELITES?

Joseph died in Egypt when he was a hundred and ten years old (Gen. 50: 22). Before he died he said to his brothers, But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Gen. 50: 24).

The Israelites suffered mercilessly at the hands of the Egyptians. After Joseph’s death they remained in the land of Egypt for many years. But Joseph’s prophecy was fulfilled in the exodus. God chose Moses for the task.

We read: When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, ‘If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.’ So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt armed for battle’ (Gen. 13: 17-19).

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He had said, ‘God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place’ (Exod. 13: 19).

God used Joseph as an administrator in the land of Egypt. But God also used him as a prophet. God will ask you to serve him. When he does, he will give you the ability to carry out his will and plan. Please be faithful to God’s call.

WHY DID JOSEPH’S BROTHERS SELL HIM INTO SLAVERY? WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM HIS LIFE?

Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob (Israel). Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons because Joseph was born when his father was an old man. Because of his love for Joseph, Israel made him “a richly ornamented robe.” As a result, Joseph was hated by his brothers.

One night Joseph had a dream. When he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. Joseph had a second dream which he told to his brothers and father. This caused his brothers to become jealous of him.

One day when his brothers were out caring for the flocks, Israel sent Joseph to make sure that everything was well with them. They seized the opportunity and sold him to a group of merchants who took him to Egypt. The merchants sold Joseph to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh,s officials.

PLEASE READ THE ACCOUNT IN GENESIS, CHAPTER 37.

Through a series of events, Joseph was placed by Pharaoh to be in charge of the whole land of Egypt. (Genesis, chapters 39-41).

Because of a famine in the land of Canaan, Joseph’s brothers were sent to Egypt to purchase grain. On one of their journeys to Egypt, Joseph made himself known to his brothers (Genesis, chapter 45).

After the death of Israel the brothers of Joseph said to him, “We are your slaves” (Gen. 50: 18). Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children” (Gen. 50: 18-21).

God has a plan for your life. The road may be rough sometimes but trust in God. He will accomplish his plan for your life as He did for Joseph.

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT ISAAC AND WHY WAS HE A SIGNIFICANT PERSON?

Isaac was a miracle child. God promised Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son (Gen. 15: 4). But they had to wait for God’s timing. Isaac was born when Sarah was ninety years old and Abraham was a hundred years old (Gen. 17: 17).

Later on God commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering. God was testing Abraham.  Abraham set out to accomplish what God commanded him to do. As he was about to slay Isaac for the burnt offering, God intervened. God provided a ram for the burnt offering (Gen. 22: 1-2, 9-13).

When Isaac was forty years old, he married his cousin, Rebekah. She was barren. Isaac prayed to God on his wife’s behalf and she became pregnant. She gave birth to twin boys, Esau and Jacob (Gen. 25: 19-26).

Jacob’s name was later changed by God to Israel (Gen. 32: 28). He became the father of the twelve tribes of Israel.

In man’s eyes, Isaac does not seem to have played a significant role but in God’s eyes he was a very important person. Through his grandson, Judah, the ancestry of our Lord, Jesus Christ, is traced (Matt. 1: 1-17).

What about you? In God’s eyes you are a very important person. As a believer in Jesus Christ, God dwells in you and you dwell in God (1 John 4: 15). Please be faithful to God’s call on your life.

What is the Galeed or Mizpah covenant?

When Laban received news that Jacob, his wives, concubines and his entire household as well as all his animals had gone, he pursued them. After seven days, Laban caught up with Jacob and all those who accompanied him. But  Laban was warned by God in a dream to be gentle with Jacob (Gen. 31: 1-24).

Laban suggested that they make a covenant as a witness between themselves (Gen. 31: 44). So Jacob and his relatives  piled stones in a heap. Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha and Jacob called it Galeed. Laban also called the pile of stones Mizpah because he said, May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other (Gen. 31: 49).

How many sons were born to Abraham?

When this question is asked, there is almost always an automatic response. Abraham had two sons, Ishmael and Isaac.

Ishmael was born when Abraham was eighty-six years old (Gen. 16: 16) and Isaac was born when Abraham was a hundred years old (Gen. 21: 5).

Did Abraham have other children? After Sarah died, Abraham took another wife. We read in the Bible: Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah  (Gen. 25: 1-2).

The Bible records that Abraham had eight sons.
