GOD PARTED THE WATER OF THE JORDAN FOR ELISHA

After Elijah was taken up to heaven, Elisha picked up the coat that had fallen from him. He went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan and struck the water with it. After he called on God, the water divided to the right and left and so he was able to cross over on dry ground.

The company of the prophets from Jericho were watching and said, The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha (2 Kings 2: 15).

ELISHA WILLINGLY RESPONDED TO HIS CALL

God appeared to Elijah when he was spending the night in a cave in Horeb, the mountain of God. God instructed him to anoint Elisha to succeed him as prophet. Elijah went and found Elisha who was plowing his field. So Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha asked for permission to say goodbye to his parents.

After Elisha went to his parents, he slaughtered his yoke of oxen. He used the plowing equipment as wood for the fire to cook the meat which he gave to the people.

After that we read, Then he set out to follow Elijah and become his attendant (1 Kings 19: 21).

    THE MIRACLE OF RAIN

We recall that Elijah had prophesied to Ahab that there was not going to be dew nor rain for the next few years except at his word (1 Kings 17: 1).

So after the prophets were slaughtered in the Kishon Valley, Elijah said to Ahab, Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain (1 Kings 18: 41). Ahab went off as he was asked and Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel. He bent down to the ground and put his head between his knees.

He instructed his servant, Go and look toward the sea (1 Kings 18: 43). His servant came back with the answer that he did not see anything. Elijah repeated the instruction five times and his servant came back with the same response. Elijah sent his servant a seventh time. On this occasion he came back with the answer, A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea (1 Kings 18: 44).

Elijah said to his servant, Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you' (1 Kings 18: 44).

Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. The power of the Lord came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel (1 Kings 18: 45).

WHY DID ELIJAH FLEE TO HOREB?

Ahab informed his wife, Jezebel, about what Elijah had done on Mount Carmel and how he had killed all the prophets of Baal and Asherah with the sword in the Kishon Valley. As a result, Jezebel sent a message to Elijah to say, May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them (1 Kings 19: 2).

When Elijah received the message he was afraid and ran for his life. He went into the desert and sat down under a tree. He prayed that he might die. Then he laid down and fell asleep.

An angel appeared, touched him and said, Get up and eat (1 Kings 19: 5). Elijah looked around and saw a cake of bread baked over coals and a jar of water. He ate and drank and laid down again.

The angel came back a second time and touched him and said, Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you (1 Kings 19: 7). Elijah ate and drank and was strengthened by the food. From there he traveled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night.

God appeared to Elijah and instructed him to go back the way he came to the Desert of Damascus. He was commanded to anoint Hazael king over Aram and Jehu king over Israel. He was also commanded to anoint Elisha to succeed him as prophet.

WHAT MIRACLE TOOK PLACE ON MOUNT CARMEL?

Elijah charged Ahab with abandoning the commands of God and following the Baals. He asked Ahab to summon the people from all over Israel to meet him on Mount Carmel. He also asked him to bring the eight hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and Asherah who were supported by Jezebel.

Ahab did as Elijah requested. Elijah said to the people, How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him (1 Kings 18: 21).

God showed his power by responding to the prayer of Elijah but the prophets of Baal and Asherah were not successful when they called to their gods.

The sacrifice of the prophets was not consumed but the sacrifice of Elijah was consumed by fire from God. Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench (1 Kings 18: 38).

When the people saw how God answered the prayer of Elijah, they fell to the ground and cried, The Lord, he is God! The Lord—he is God (1 Kings 18: 39).

Elijah commanded the people to seize the prophets of Baal. They were taken to the Kishon Valley where they were slaughtered.

    ELIJAH TAKEN UP TO HEAVEN

Some time after Elijah anointed Elisha to replace him as a prophet, they were travelling from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel (2 Kings 2: 2).

But Elisha replied, As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you (2 Kings 2: 2).

So they went down to Bethel. There, the company of prophets came out to Elisha and asked, Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today (2 Kings 2: 3)? Elisha assured them that he knew and asked them not to speak about it.

Then Elijah informed him that the Lord was sending him to Jericho. But Elisha told him that he was not allowing him to go by himself. So they went to Jericho.

The company of prophets at Jericho went up to Elisha and asked him, Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today (2 Kings 2: 5)? Elisha told them that he knew and asked them not to speak about it.

Elijah then asked Elisha to stay in Jericho because the Lord had sent him to the Jordan. Elisha insisted that he should go with his master. So both of them walked on.

When Elijah and Elisha stopped at the Jordan, fifty men of the company of prophets stood at a distance facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped. Elijah, rolling up his coat, struck the water with it. The water parted and both of them crossed over on dry ground.

After crossing, Elijah asked Elisha if he wanted him to do anything for him before he was taken away. Elisha replied, Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit (2 Kings 2: 9).  Elijah said to him that he had asked a difficult thing. But if Elisha saw him when he was taken away his request would be granted.

As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2: 11).

GOD PERFORMED A MIRACLE USING THE WIDOW’S OIL

A widow whose husband was a prophet informed Elisha that her husband was dead and his creditor was coming to take her two sons as his slaves.

Elisha asked her how he could help and what she had in her house. She replied that she had nothing except a little oil. Elisha told her to go to all her neighbors and ask for empty jars. After she got them, she was asked to go into her house and shut the door. She was told to pour oil into all the jars.

The widow did as Elisha had asked. After all the jars were filled, the oil from the original jar stopped flowing.

The widow went out and reported to Elisha what had happened to the oil. He said, Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left (2 Kings 4: 7).

THE SHUNAMMITE BOY RAISED FROM THE DEAD

A well-to-do woman and her husband who lived in Shunem had no children. They prepared a room in their house for Elisha so that he could stay there whenever he visited. One day when he was at her home he thought about doing a favor for her. Elisha asked his servant to call the woman. She came and stood in the doorway. Elisha said to her, About this time next year you will hold a son in your arms (2 Kings 4: 16).

The woman said to Elisha that he was misleading her. But she  became pregnant and gave birth to a son the next year. As time went by, one day the boy went to the field to meet his father. As he got there, he complained about his head. His father asked a servant to carry his son to his mother. She held him on her lap for some time and then he died. She took him to Elisha’s room and laid him on the bed. She shut the door and went out.

The woman traveled on her donkey to Mount Carmel to meet Elisha. Elisha saw her in the distance and sent his servant, Gehazi, to ask her, Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right (2 Kings 4: 26)?

The woman answered, Everything is all right (2 Kings 4: 26).

When she reached Elisha she held on to his feet. Elisha’s servant went over to push her away but Elisha said, Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why (2 Kings 4: 27).

Elisha sent his servant with his staff and asked him to run as fast as he could without greeting anyone on the way. He was asked to lay the staff on the boy’s face.

The woman refused to leave so Elisha decided to go with her. Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him that the boy did not awake. When Elisha reached the house he went into his room where the child was lying dead on the couch. He shut the door and prayed to the Lord. Then he got on the bed and lay upon the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out upon him, the boy’s body grew warm (2 Kings 4: 34).

Elisha got up and walked back and forth in the room. Then he stretched out on the boy again. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes (2 Kings 4: 35).

Elisha called his servant and asked him to call the boy’s mother. When she went into the room Elisha asked her to take her son. She fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.

WHY DID THE PROPHET ELISHA REBUKE HIS SERVANT?

Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, offered a gift to Elisha after God healed his leprosy. But Elisha refused the gift. After Naaman had traveled some distance Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, decided to go after him for a gift.

Gehazi caught up with him and after telling a lie to him received gifts of silver and clothing. When he came back to the house Elisha asked, Where have you been, Gehazi (2 Kings 5: 25). Gehazi replied, Your servant didn’t go anywhere (2 Kings 5: 25).

Elisha said to him, Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money, or to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, flocks, herds, or menservants and maidservants? Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever (2 Kings 5: 26-27).

    GOD HEALS AN ARAMEAN COMMANDER

Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, had leprosy. He was told about the prophet Elisha by a young Jewish girl who had been taken captive by men from Aram who had gone down to Israel. She served Naaman’s wife.

She said to her mistress, If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy (2 Kings 5: 3).

Naaman told the king what the girl had said. The king encouraged him to go and gave him a letter to the king of Israel. Naaman left taking with him expensive gifts.

The letter to the king of Israel read, With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy (2 Kings 5: 6).

When the king of Israel read the letter he was very upset and tore his robes. When Elisha heard what the king had done, he sent a message to the king asking him to send Naaman to him. When Naaman arrived Elisha did not come out but he sent a messenger instructing Naaman what he had to do. But Naaman became angry and left.

But Elisha’a servants went after him and encouraged him to do what the prophet had instructed. Naaman agreed. He dipped in the Jordan seven times and he was healed.

Naaman and all his attendants went back to Elisha. He stood before Elisha and said, Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. Please accept now a gift from your servant (2 Kings 5: 15). But Elisha refused to accept the gift even though Naaman encouraged him. He said, As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing (2 Kings 5: 16).

WHY WAS THE KING OF ARAM ENRAGED WITH HIS OFFICERS?

The king of Aram was at war with Israel. So he decided to set up his camp after discussing it with his officers.

But the prophet Elisha sent a message to the king of Israel advising him not to go where the army of Aram was camped. The message read, Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there (2 Kings 6: 9). The king of Israel checked on the place because Elisha had warned him several times before.

The king of Aram was enraged because he believed that one of his officers was informing the king of Israel. He called together his officers and demanded of them, Will you not tell me which of us is on the side of the king of Israel (2 Kings 6: 11)?

One officer replied, None of us, my lord the king, but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom (2 Kings 6: 12).

WHY DID GOD STRIKE THE ARAMEANS WITH BLINDNESS?

After learning that it was not one of his officers who was informing the king of Israel about the place of their camp but it was the prophet Elisha, the king of Aram ordered his officers to find out where Elisha was so that he could be captured.

It was reported to him that Elisha was in Dothan. So the king sent horses and chariots and soldiers to Dothan. They went by night and surrounded the city.

When Elisha’s servant went out the next morning he saw the city surrounded by Arameans. He said to Elisha, Oh, my lord, what shall we do (2 Kings 6: 15)?

Elisha answered, Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them (2 Kings 6: 16).

Elisha prayed, O Lord, open his eyes so he may see. Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha (2 Kings 6: 17).

As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed that God would strike them with blindness. God answered Elisha’s prayer. Elisha led them to Samaria into the hands of the king of Israel pretending that he was leading them to the man they were looking for, that is, himself.

Elisha prayed that God would remove their blindness so that they could see. The king of Israel asked Elisha if he should kill them but Elisha asked him not to. Elisha encouraged the king to prepare a meal for them which he did. After they were finished eating and drinking they returned to their master, the king of Aram.

After this incident, the bands from Aram stopped raiding the land of Israel.

GOD PROVIDES FOOD DURING THE FAMINE

The king of Aram with his army marched up and laid siege to Samaria. There was a great famine in the city of Samaria and the people were without food. So four lepers who were at the entrance of the city gate decided to go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender.

God had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army so they fled leaving behind their supplies. The Arameans said to one another, Look, the king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us! So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives (2 Kings 7: 6-7).

The four lepers were able to eat and drink and take away silver, gold and clothes.

The king of Israel was informed about the situation and after taking the necessary precautions the people were able to plunder the camp of the Arameans.

THE GOD OF ISRAEL INTRODUCED TO THE  “ASSYRIANS” IN SAMARIA

When Israel was exiled in Assyria, the king of Assyria sent people from Babylon and other areas to the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites.

God sent lions among them and some of the people were killed. The reason for this was because the people were not worshiping God. This was reported to the king of Assyria. The people you deported and resettled in the towns of Samaria do not know what the God of that country requires. He has sent lions among them, which are killing them off, because the people do not know what he requires (2 Kings 17:26).

The king ordered that one of the priests who was taken captive from Samaria should go back and live there to teach the people what the God of the land required. So one of the priests was sent to live in Bethel and taught the people how to worship God.

They worshiped God but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they were sent.

ALL ISRAEL EXILED EXCEPT THE TRIBE OF JUDAH

In 721 B.C. the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to his country. They were settled in several areas.

This happened because the Israelites sinned against God. They worshiped other gods and followed the practices of the nations around them. They built high places in all their towns. They set up sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree. They burned incense at every high place as the heathen nations. They bowed down to all the starry hosts and they worshiped Baal. They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sorcery and did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

As a result, the Lord was very angry with them and removed them from their land. So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria … (2 Kings 17: 23).

    WHAT HAPPENED WHEN JERUSALEM FELL?

Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah as the governor over all the people who were left in Judah, when Judah went into captivity in 586 B.C. When the army officers learned that Gedaliah was appointed governor they went to him. He told them, Do not be afraid of the Babylonian officials. Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you (2 Kings 25: 24).

But in the seventh month of Gedaliah’s reign, Ishmael, son of Nethania, who was of royal blood, went with others and assassinated Gedaliah and other men from Judah as well as Babylonians who were with him at Mizpah.

When this took place all the people along with the army officers fled to Egypt for fear of the Babylonians.

WHAT ACCELERATED THE FALL OF JERUSALEM?

Jehoiachin was king of Judah. But Nebuchadnezzar made his uncle, Mattaniah, king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah. Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king and he reigned in Jerusalem for eleven years.

Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. So in the ninth year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar marched against Jerusalem with his whole army. He encamped outside the city and built siege works all around it  (2 Kings 25: 1).

Jerusalem was kept under siege and at the end of two years the famine in the city was very severe. There was no food for the people. The Babylonians broke the city wall and Zedekiah and his men fled at night through the gate. The Babylonians pursued him and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. His soldiers were separated from him and they scattered.

Zedekiah was captured and he was taken to the king of Babylon at Riblah. They killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon (2 Kings 25: 7).

    MANASSEH SAVED!

Manasseh was extremely wicked. God spoke to Manasseh and the people of Israel but they paid no attention. So God brought against them the army of the king of Assyria. Manasseh was taken prisoner.

We read, So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner, put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon (2 Chronicles 33: 11).

In his distress in Babylon, Manasseh sought the favor of God and he humbled himself. When he prayed, God was moved by his pleading and listened to him. As a result, God brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom.

    Then Manasseh acknowledged God.

    HEZEKIAH’S ILLNESS

Hezekiah became ill and was about to die. The Lord gave the prophet Isaiah a message for the king. The message was, This is what the Lord says: ‘Put your house in order, because you will die; you will not recover (2 Kings 20: 1).

After receiving the message, Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, ‘Remember, O Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion  and have done what is good in your eyes.’ And Hezekiah wept bitterly (2 Kings 20: 2-3).

While Isaiah was going away, he received a message from the Lord. Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David (2 Kings 20: 5-6).

Isaiah asked Hezekiah to prepare a poultice of figs. His servants did so and applied it to the boil. Hezekiah recovered.

HEZEKIAH ASKED THE PROPHET ISAIAH FOR A SIGN

God instructed the prophet Isaiah to say to Hezekiah that he had heard his prayers and seen his tears and that he would heal him.

Hezekiah asked the prophet for a sign that would indicate that God would heal him and that he would go up to the temple on the third day.

The prophet gave Hezekiah a choice as to what he wanted the Lord to do regarding a  sign that God had promised. Do you want the shadow to go forward ten steps or do you want it to go back ten steps on the stairway of Ahaz?

Hezekiah said that it was a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps. So he requested that the shadow go back ten steps.

Then the prophet Isaiah called upon the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz (2 Kings 20: 11).

    HEZEKIAH, A UNIQUE KING

Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king and he reigned in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord just as David had done. He removed the high places, broke to pieces the sacred stones and got rid of the Asherah poles. He broke to pieces the bronze snake Moses had made during the Exodus because the Israelites were burning incense to it.

We read about him, Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. He held fast to the Lord and did not cease to follow him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. And the Lord was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. From watchtower to fortified city, he defeated the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory (2 Kings 18: 5-8).

In the fourteenth year of his reign, the king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. Hezekiah asked the king of Assyria to withdraw and he would be paid whatever money he demanded. Hezekiah gave silver and gold to the king of Assyria to meet his demand.

JOSIAH RENEWED THE COVENANT AND SERVED GOD WHOLEHEARTEDLY

After the high priest and others took the message (2 Kings 22: 18-20) from the prophetess Huldah to king Josiah, he called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. They went up to the temple accompanied by all the people of Judah and Jerusalem as well as the priests and the prophets.

He read to them all the words of the Book of the Covenant which had been found in the temple. The king renewed the covenant to follow the Lord and keep his commands, regulations and decrees with all his heart and all his soul.

Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.

The king ordered that all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts be removed from the temple. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. He did away with all the pagan priests who were appointed by previous kings. He also destroyed the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes which were in the temple. The king also had the priests desecrate the high places where incense were burned and he got rid of everything that was displeasing to God.

The king gave this order to all the people: ‘Celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.’ Not since the days of the judges who led Israel, nor throughout the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah, had any such Passover been observed. But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the Lord in Jerusalem (2 Kings 23: 21-23).

We read concerning Josiah, Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses (2 Kings 23: 25).

WHY DID THE NEW KING OF BABYLON SHOW KINDNESS TO JEHOIACHIN?

Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king and he reigned in Jerusalem for three months. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord just as his father had done.

Nebuchadnezzar advanced with his army on Jerusalem and Jehoiachin surrendered and was taken as a prisoner to Babylon.

But in the thirty-seventh year of the exile, Evil-Merodach became king of Babylon and he released Jehoiachin from prison. He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table. WHAT MADE JOSIAH AN OUTSTANDING KING?

Josiah was only eight years old when he became king and he reigned in Jerusalem for thirty-one years. We read, He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left (2 Kings 22: 2).

Josiah ordered that repairs be done to the temple. While they were working on the repairs the high priest found the Book of the Law. When the king was informed about the Book of the Law he ordered the high priest and others to inquire of the Lord concerning the Book.  So they went to the prophetess Huldah. She said to them, “This is what the Lord says: I am going to bring disaster on this place and its people, according to everything written in the book the king of Judah has read. Because they have forsaken me and burned incense to other gods and provoked me to anger by all the idols their hands have made, my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched’ (2 Kings 22: 15-17).

The Lord through the prophetess gave this message to the men for the king. Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its people, that they would become accursed and laid waste, and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the Lord. Therefore I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place’ (2 Kings 22: 18-20).

The men took the answer back to the king.

WHY DID GOD NOT TURN AWAY FROM HIS FIERCE ANGER DESPITE JOSIAH’S FAITHFULNESS?

Despite Josiah’s renewal of the covenant and the people’s pledge to it, God did not turn away from his fierce anger. His anger continued to burn against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke him.

Manasseh did evil in the eyes of the Lord. He rebuilt the high places his father had destroyed. He also erected altars to Baal and made an Asherah pole. He bowed down to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. He built altars to all the starry hosts in both courts of the temple. Manasseh sacrificed his own son in the fire.

God said, I will remove Judah also from my presence as I removed Israel, and I will reject Jerusalem, the city I chose, and this temple, about which I said, ‘There shall my Name be’ (2 Kings 23: 27).

HOW WAS ELIJAH TAKEN CARE OF SUPERNATURALLY?

Ahab, king of Israel, did more to provoke the Lord to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him. Because of what he did, Elijah pronounced a curse. He said to Ahab, As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word (1 Kings 17: 1).

God directed Elijah to leave at once and hide in the ravine of Kerith, east of the Jordan. God said to him, You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there (1 Kings 17: 4).

Elijah did what the Lord told him. While he was in the ravine, The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook (1 Kings 17: 6).

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN REHOBOAM ATTEMPTED TO REGAIN THE KINGDOM OF ISRAEL FROM JEROBOAM?

Rehoboam assembled the whole house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand fighting men, to make war against the house of Israel and to regain the kingdom.

But God spoke to Shemaiah, a man of God, and instructed him to speak to Rehoboam and to the whole house of Judah and Benjamin. This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, everyone of you, for this is my doing (1 Kings 12: 24).

Rehoboam and the fighting men with him obeyed the word of the Lord and went home.

WHY DID ISRAE REBEL AGAINST REHOBOAM, SON OF SOLOMON?

When Rehoboam became king, Jeroboam along with many Israelites went to him complaining of the heavy yoke his father, Solomon, had placed on them. They asked him to lighten the yoke and promised to serve him.

Rehoboam asked them to come back in three days. So he consulted with the elders who had served his father. The elders advised him to give the people a favorable answer. But he rejected their advice and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and who were serving him. They advised him to tell the people, … My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions (1 Kings 12: 10-11).

Three days later the people went back to Rehoboam. He told them what the young men.

So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite. This was the message from the Lord, See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes (1 Kings 11: 31).

The Israelites went home. King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day (1 King 12: 18-19).
