THE
LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD
Before
continuing this study, great care must be taken to understand that despite the
rebellion of the nation of Israel, including the Levitical priesthood, God has
not cast them all off. This does not mean that people can be saved based on
their nation of origin. This means that all peoples, including those of the
nation of Israel will be saved who believe on the name of Jesus Christ. God has
no divided camp between Jew and Gentile, as all who believe in His Son Jesus Christ,
are all one in Him.
2
Cor 3: 12Seeing
then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: 13And not as
Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could
not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: 14But their minds
were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the
reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 15But even unto
this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. 16Nevertheless
when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. The Bible speaks
with absolute authority-there is no other name under heaven by which men can be
saved:
Act 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all
the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye
crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man
stand here before you whole.
Act 4:11 This is the stone which was set at
nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
Act 4:12 Neither is there
salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among
men, whereby we must be saved.
God
according to His sovereign will and plan has designated both believers out of the nation of Israel
and believing gentiles together to participate in the work of the gospel and in the end
times as well, for His purposes. Nevertheless, it must be kept in mind that all
believers are one body in Jesus Christ. All believers are delivered from the
Law through faith in Jesus Christ alone. (See Rom 11:23-36).

THE
LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD
We
continue to examine this old corrupted Levitical priesthood. Question? Did the
Levitical priesthood’s greed for money arise out of the eternal truth that
their ministry was programmed by God for termination? Were they trying to lay
aside money for when their income derived from tithing to them would end? I do
not know and the Bible does not say, so that is where we must end too. But this
is true, they were without a single doubt extremely avaricious for money and
property too, and they did not care who they took it from.
The
Levitical priesthood was commanded by the Law to give a portion of the tithe to
certain indigent persons, such as widows, the fatherless and the poor.
It
is rarely even mentioned by those today among modern day advocates who love
commanding a tithe for Christians, that the poor, fatherless and widows are
exempt by God from tithing. Instead, those who in error claim the right to
receive a tithe use the example of the widow’s mite, to claim “no one is too
poor to give”.
Mar 12:41 - And Jesus sat over against the treasury,
and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich
cast in much.
Mar 12:42 - And there came a certain poor
widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
Mar 12:43 - And he called unto him his
disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow
hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
Mar 12:44 - For all they did cast in of
their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even
all her living.
Jesus did not cite this parable in any way to
endorse extracting money from the poor or widows etc., in that He made a
scathing condemnation against extracting a tithe from widows and others to the
extent that they were made even worse off. Mat 23:14
- Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long
prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

THE
LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD
What
did the Levitical priesthood know about the coming Messiah and when did they
know it? They knew that none received salvation under the Law, as God appointed
it to show that all men were abject sinners, but allowed temporary forgiveness
only, until the next sin, nevertheless people died in sin as it was impossible
for them to keep up with or even remember all the various sins they committed.
For this reason, the whole of Israel begged God for a Deliverer, who would save
them from all their sins permanently, which the Law never could as ordained by
God.
This
Deliverer was known to them by such names not only Deliverer, but Saviour,
Messiah, Anointed One or Christ. Therefore, all Israel knew at the very
beginning that God had planned the obsolescence of the Levitical priesthood
through the promised coming of a new, and better covenant inaugurating a new
eternal high priest in the Saviour to come, with a new priesthood under Him
that would be for all believers, not just the nation of Israel.

THE
LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD
In this study we take a hard look at the Levitical priesthood of the Law, given by God to
obtain temporary atonement for men through offering of sacrifices for the sins
of people who when they confessed them would escape punishment or death by
substituting an animal in their place.
By
the time of Malachi, the Levitical priesthood was in open disobedience to the
Law. It is true that some were faithful, however God commanded that the whole Levitical
priesthood was to be faithful. Instead, the majority of them had become so corrupt
and greedy for money that the Bible tells us: Malachi 1: 10Who is there even among you
that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire
on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you,
saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
Before
this in their greed they were doing many other corrupt things that greatly
angered and insulted God, Mal 1: 6A
son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be
a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is
my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O
priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised
thy name? 7Ye offer polluted bread
upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The
table of the LORD is contemptible. 8And if ye offer
the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil?
The
Levitical priesthood is promoted in error by some as a great and good example of faithfulness. The truth is that
they were far from it, as they deliberately and openly rebelled against God,
and became corrupters of the people by the multitude of their depraved examples.
Where
is the good news in this bad news of the corrupt Levitical priesthood?
The
good news is that the Law does exactly what God purposed; it reveals the
eternal truth that all men, even those purported to be the best of men are
sinners at heart, have no power over sin, and that neither they nor anyone can
ever be made righteous under the Law. The Law establishes that all who violate
the Law are all sinners perfectly deserving of its punishment, condemnation and
death.
For
this reason, we must beware of false teachers who preach that men can please God
or obtain salvation under the Law whether in whole or in part. The only things
certain in the Law is that all under It justly receive condemnation, punishment and
death.

"To the contrary, 'if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.' Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:20-21
Joe
"Yes, because were purchased at the price of his blood, you don’t belong to you anymore. But that is a good thing. The One who now owns you is wiser and more powerful manager of your life than you ever would have been. He cares for you with magnificent grace, incalculable wisdom, and limitless power. Being owned by him means you are in the best of hands. It means that you’re no longer burdened by living for you. A new owner has taken control of your life, and this new owner is more capable than anyone or anything you can give your life to." Paul Tripp, "New Morning Mercies," May 30th.
