1 Thessalonians 4
1 Thessalonians 4
A disciple abstains from sexual immorality.
3For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that
you abstain from sexual immorality; 4that
each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5not
in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;6that
no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an
avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7For
God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 8Therefore
whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit
to you. (ESV)
A disciple loves
others.
9Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to
you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, 10for
that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But
we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, (ESV)
A disciple aspires to
live a quiet life, minding his own business and to work with his own hands so
that he does have to depend on others.
11and
to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your
hands, as we instructed you, 12so
that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one. (ESV)

Colossians 3
Colossians 3
A disciple seeks the things that are above and not the
things of the earth.
1If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are
above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.2Set your
minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3For you
have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When
Christ who is yourlife appears, then you also will appear with
him in glory. (ESV)
A disciple puts to
death what is earthly in him such as sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil
desire, and covetousness.
5Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality,
impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6On
account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7In these
you too once walked, when you were living in them (ESV)
A disciple puts away
anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene talk, and dishonesty and puts away the
old self and puts on the new self in Christ.
8But now
you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk
from your mouth. 9Do not
lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10and have
put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its
creator. 11Here
there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian,
slave, free; but Christ is all,
and in all. (ESV)
A disciple puts on a
heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. He bears with one another and forgives one
another. A disciple puts on love and
lets the peace of Christ rule in his heart.
He lets the word of Christ dwell with in him and sings with thankfulness
to God. Everything he does he does in
the name of Jesus.
12So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a
heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a
complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14Beyond all these things put
on love, which is the perfect
bond of unity. 15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were
called in one body; and be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom
teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with
thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks through Him to God the Father. (NASB)
