What is the first announcement in the Bible of the defeat of Satan and the victory of Jesus – a victory in which all believers will share?

God said to the serpent who symbolizes Satan: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel (Gen. 3: 15).

The seed of the woman does not refer to Cain as some believe. The seed of the woman refers to Jesus. Satan through the crucifixion of Jesus struck his heel  but Jesus through his glorious resurrection crushed Satan’s head  thereby making eternal life a reality.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians: Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15: 55-57).

Satan had his way and his day; his way in deceiving Eve and Adam (through Eve) (Gen. 3:6); his day in deceiving the nations (Gen. 20: 3). But his doom is certain (Rev. 20: 10).

What does the Bible teach us about Lot?

Lot was Abram’s  nephew, the son of his brother Haran. Abram took Lot with him to the land of Canaan. When famine plagued the land of Canaan, Abram and his household went to Egypt accompanied by Lot. When Abram left Egypt and went to the Negev, Lot went along. Once in the Negev, Abram moved from place to place. Lot moved with him. Because of quarrelling between Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen, Abram suggested to Lot that they should part company.  Lot was given the opportunity to choose where he wished to settle (Genesis 11: 31-13: 8).

Lot chose the plain of Jordan and pitched his tents near Sodom (Gen. 13: 10-12). “Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord” (Gen. 13: 13, NIV).

Four kings seized all the goods and food of Sodom and Gomorrah and went away. They took Lot and his possessions as well ( Genesis 14: 11-12). When Abram heard about his nephew, he pursued the kings, defeated them and brought Lot and his possessions back (Genesis 14: 11-16).

So far the Bible does not place a blot on Lot’s character.

When the angels who had visited Abraham arrived in Sodom, Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. What was he doing there? Was he engaging in idle talk or was he sharing his faith in God? (Most likely he was sharing with the elders of Sodom about God's greatness, holiness, goodness and above all his love. For the apostle Peter tells us that he was "distressed by the filthy lives" of the men ( 2 Pet. 2: 7). But we cannot say for certain).  When Lot saw the angels, he stood up and bowed down with his face to the ground. He also addressed them as “my Lords.” Lot’s action and words demonstrated his respect for and submission to the angels. Lot invited the angels to spend the night with him but they declined. He insisted strongly and they agreed. Lot prepared a meal for them which they ate (Genesis 19: 1-4).

Before Lot, his family and the angels had gone to bed, all the men from the city of Sodom surrounded the house and ordered Lot to bring out the men (angels) so that they could have sex with them (Genesis 19: 4-5). Lot, out of reverence for the heavenly visitors, did not allow them to go outdoors. Instead he offered his virgin daughters to the men so that they could do whatever they wished with them. But God,  through his mercy, allowed the angels to strike the men with blindness so that they could not find the door. (We recall that Jephthah offered up his virgin daughter as a burnt offering to fulfill a vow he had made to the Lord (Judges 11: 1-39)).

When the angels asked Lot if he had anyone else in the city who belonged to him, he went to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He did so because the angels said to him that they were going to destroy the place. His sons-in-law thought that he was joking and paid no attention to him.

There is only one thing that we could question about Lot, that was his hesitation when the angels urged him to hurry and take his wife and two daughters out of the city. Why did Lot hesitate? The Bible does not give us the answer. Was it because he was concerned about what was going to happen to his sons-in-law and all the inhabitants? We do not know. But the angels led Lot, his wife and his two daughters safely out of the city.

There is nothing in the Bible that could be held against Lot. He showed respect and reverence for the angels and compassion for his sons-in-law.

The apostle Peter under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit mentions Noah and Lot as righteous men. He writes about God’s  rescue of Lot, “ … and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard) -  if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous  for the day of judgment, while continuing  their punishment” ( 2 Peter 2: 7-9, NIV).

Are you trying to please God with your life? Please remember that the Holy Spirit is interceding for you in accordance with God’s will (Rom. 8: 27).

    How was the deceiver deceived?

When Isaac was old and he could not see , Rebekah, the mother of Esau and Jacob, overheard him promising to give Esau his older son his blessing when he returned from hunting and prepared him some tasty food. Before Esau returned, Rebekah disguised Jacob as Esau by a well thought out sheme and sent him to his father with some tasty food that she prepared. Isaac was very suspicious but because he could not see he gave in to the scheme. In this way Jacob was able to deceive his father and receive the blessing that Isaac had promised to give to Esau (Genesis 27: 1-29).

The above incident resulted in Jacob leaving home and going to his uncle’s home in Paddan Aram (Mesopotamia). Once there Jacob fell in love with his cousin, Rachel, and promised to work for his uncle in exchange for Rachel as his wife. The wedding night came and his uncle deceived him by giving him Leah, the older sister, as his wife. When Jacob woke up in the morning he realized that he was deceived (Genesis 29: 14-26). He said to his uncle: I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me? Laban, his uncle, replied, It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one (Genesis 29: 25-26). Jacob continued working for his uncle in exchange for Rachel as his wife.

How was Esau’s selling of his birthright relevant to God’s plan for Jacob’s life?

One day Esau came in from the field famished. He requested some food from his brother Jacob who was cooking. In exchange for the food, Jacob asked Esau to sell him his birthright. Esau swore an oath selling his birthright (Gen. 25:  29-34).

When Isaac was old he requested some tasty food from Esau. So Esau had to go hunting. His father promised to bless him when he came back (Gen. 27: 3-4). Rebekah overheard their conversation (Gen. 27: 5).

But before Esau and Jacob were born, God said to their mother Rebekah that the older will serve the younger (Gen. 25: 23).

In order for Jacob to receive the blessing from his father, Isaac, he had to deceive him by pretending to be Esau. This was accomplished by a scheme designed by his mother, Rebekah.

She prepared the food and dressed her younger son, Jacob, to feel and smell like Esau and sent him to his father before Esau arrived. Although Isaac had his doubts, he ate the food and pronounced Esau’s blessing on Jacob. Jacob now had the birthright, the blessing and God’s word that the older will serve the younger (Gen. 27: 3-40).

Was Lot responsible for the incest in which he was involved (Genesis 19: 30-38)?

The Grosset Webster Dictionary (New Revised Edition) defines incest as follows: Sexual intercourse between persons too closely related to be legally married.

How did the incest come about? Lot and his daughters were taken by the angels out of Sodom and they settled in Zoar. But Lot was afraid to remain in Zoar so he took his two daughters to the mountains and they lived there in a cave.

Since there were no men around for his daughters to be married to and have children as a means of preserving their family line, the young ladies devised a scheme. They got their father drunk and the older daughter had sex with him that night. The following night they got their father drunk and the younger daughter had sex with him.

Both daughters became pregnant. The older daughter’s son was named Moab. He became the father of the Moabites. The younger daughter also had a son and she named him Ben-Ammi. He became the father of the Ammonites.

The Scripture informs us that Lot was not aware of what his daughters had done (Gen. 19: 33, 35).

Why did Lot's wife become a pillar of salt?

The two angels who overnighted in Lot's house led him, his wife and his two daughters safely out of the city. When they got out of the city, one of the angels said, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back, and don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!" (Gen. 19:17). Lot obtained the angel's permission to flee to a nearby town instead of going to the mountains (Gen. 19: 18-22).

Lot's wife was destroyed (became a pillar of salt) because she was disobedient to the angel's command (Gen. 19:26).

Obedience to God is absolutely necessary in our walk with God.

We read: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3: 5-6).

What was the significance of the mark that Cain received and what will be the significance of the mark that the righteous will receive?

We learn from Scripture that during the Tribulation people will have identifying marks on their bodies. The righteous will have the seal of God on their foreheads (Revelation 7: 3; Revelation 9: 4) and the unrighteous will have the mark of the beast on their right hands or on their foreheads (Revelation 13: 16).

But very early in the history of God’s creation , in fact shortly after man was created Cain killed his brother Abel. Abel was righteous and Cain was unrighteous (Genesis 4: 1-8). As a consequence of his behaviour, God drove Cain away from where he was living and curses were pronounced on him (Genesis 4: 9-12). Cain cried out to the Lord saying, My punishment is more than I could bear (Genesis 4: 13). Cain was afraid that someone would kill him (Genesis 4: 14). So God promised him protection by putting a mark on him (Genesis 4: 15). This was the first mark that a person received from God.

During the Tribulation, God will put a seal on the foreheads of the righteous (Rev. 9: 4). When Jesus appears believers will appear with him in glory (Colossians 3: 4). We read concerning the righteous: No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city; and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads (Revelation 22: 3-4).

Who was the second murderer in the Bible?

We learn from the Bible that Cain killed his brother Abel. Now Cain said to his brother Abel, ‘Let’s go out to the field.’ And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him (Genesis 3: 8).

Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. … Lamech said to his wives, ‘Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me (Genesis 4: 19, 23).
