WHO MURDERED ISH-BOSHETH, KING OF ISRAEL, AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM?

When Ish-Bosheth heard that Abner had been killed, he lost courage. And so too did all Israel.

Two of Ish-Bosheth’s men, Baanah and Recab, went into his house when he was resting at noon. They made their way into the inner part of the house pretending that they were going for wheat. While they were there, they stabbed him in the stomach which resulted in his death. They cut off his head. Taking the head with them, they slipped away and traveled all night. They took the head to David at Hebron.

They said to him, Here is the head of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, your enemy, who tried to take your life. This day the Lord has avenged my lord the king against Saul and his offspring (2 Samuel 4: 8).

David answered them, As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of all trouble, when a man told me, ‘Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news! How much more—when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed—should I not now demand his blood from your hand and rid the earth of you (2 Samuel 4: 9-11).

David gave an order to his men and they killed Baanah and Recab. They cut off their hands and feet and hung their bodies by the pool in Hebron.

David’s men took Ish-Bosheth’s head and buried it in Abner’s tomb at Hebron.

WHAT CAUSED ABNER, THE COMMANDER OF SAUL’S ARMY, TO GO OVER TO DAVID?

Ish-Bosheth, king of Israel, accused the commander of his army with sleeping with his father’s concubine. Abner became very angry and reminded Ish-Bosheth of his loyalty to him.

Abner said, May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised him on oath and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba (2 Samuel 3: 9-10).

Ish-Bosheth did not respond because he was afraid of Abner.

Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you (2 Samuel 3: 12).

David made an agreement with Abner.

HOW DID DAVID RESPOND TO ABNER’S DEATH?

When David learned about Abner’s death he was saddened. He said, I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. May his blood fall upon the head of Joab and upon all his father’s house! May Joab’s house never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food (2 Samuel 3: 28-29).

David said to Joab and all the people with him, Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and walk in mourning in front of Abner (2 Samuel 3: 31).

King David walked behind the coffin.

Abner was buried in Hebron and David wept aloud at his tomb.

WHY DID JOAB, THE COMMANDER OF DAVID’S MEN, KILL ABNER?

When Joab and David’s men returned from a raid, he learned that Abner came to David and was sent away in peace. Joab said to David, What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing (2 Samuel 3: 24-25).

Joab left David and sent messengers after Abner. They found him and brought him back. David was not aware of this. Joab took Abner aside into the gateway, pretending that he wished to speak with him privately. But Joab stabbed him in the stomach and he died.

Joab killed Abner to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, whom Abner had killed with his spear.

We read, But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot (2 Samuel 2: 23).

WHAT CAUSED WAR BETWEEN THE HOUSES OF DAVID AND SAUL?

After Saul’s death, Abner, the commander of Saul’s army made Saul’s son, IshBosheth, king over all Israel (2 Samuel 2: 9). But David was anointed king over Judah (2 Samuel 2: 4).

The commander of IshBosheth’s army, Abner, and the commander of David’s army, Joab, met at Gibeon.

Then Abner said to Joab, ‘Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us’ (2 Samuel 2: 14). Joab agreed.

Twelve men were selected to fight for IshBosheth and twelve men were selected to fight for David. Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his dagger into his opponent’s side, and they fell down together (2 Samuel 2: 16).

Fighting continued. The battle was very fierce. The men of Israel were defeated by David’s men.

The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker (2 Samuel 3: 1).

HOW DID DAVID DEFEAT THE PHILISTINES AFTER HE WAS ANOINTED KING OF ALL ISEAEL?

When the Philistines learned that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up with all their men to search for him. But David heard about what they were doing and he went down to the stronghold.

David inquired of the Lord, Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me (2 Samuel 5: 19)?

God answered him, Go, for I will surely hand the Philistines over to you (2 Samuel 5: 19).

David and his men attacked the Philistines and defeated them.

He said, As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me (2 Samuel 5: 20).

The Philistines regrouped and once more went to the valley of Rephaim. So David inquired of the Lord.

God answered, Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the balsam trees. As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army (2 Samuel 5: 23-24).

David did as the Lord commanded him and he struck down the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer.

WHAT CAUSED DAVID TO BECOME ANGRY?

The Israelites were transporting the ark of God on a new cart. Two men, Uzzah and Ahio, were guiding the cart. Ahio was walking in front of it. On the way the oxen stumbled and Uzzah took hold of the ark. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God (2 Samuel 6: 7).

David was angry because the Lord had poured out his wrath on Uzzah.

It was unlawful for anyone to touch the ark. When the ark was transported poles were used. Only Levites had anything to do with the ark and the tabernacle. The ark was kept in the tabernacle during the Exodus.

HOW DID DAVID BECOME KING OVER ALL ISRAEL?

After Ish-Bosheth’s death all the tribes of Israel went to David at Hebron. They said, We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler’ (2 Samuel 5: 1-2).

When the elders went to David, he made an agreement with them before the Lord.

The elders anointed David king over all Israel. David was thirty years old when he became king and he reigned for forty years. For seven of those forty years, David reigned over Judah.

WHO WAS GOD’S CHOICE TO REPLACE DAVID AS KING?

When David was old, his son Adonijah with the assistance of others set himself up as king.

Nathan, the prophet, encouraged Bathsheba to go to David and tell him what had happened. Nathan followed Bathsheba. Bathsheba spoke with David first and then went out. Then Nathan spoke with him. When Nathan was finished speaking, David asked that Bathsheba be brought in.

When she came in, the king took an oath: As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, I will surely carry out today what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel; Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place (1 Kings 1: 29-30).

After the oath, David called in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah. He said to them, Take your lord’s servants with you and set Solomon my son on my own mule and take him down to Gihon. There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, ‘Long live king Solomon!’ Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah (1 King 1: 33-35).

    So Solomon was anointed king.

    HOW DID ABSALOM DIE?

Absalom was able to get many of the men of Israel on his side by being kind and considerate. So David encouraged his officials to flee with him from Jerusalem. David said, Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin upon us and put the city to the sword (2 Samuel 15: 14). So they all left.

When David left Jerusalem, Absalom and all his supporters went to Jerusalem. Some time later, David and all his men decided to go after Absalom. He said to his men, Be gentle with the young man Absalom for my sake (2 Samuel 18: 5). They marched into battle and Absalom and his men were defeated.

As Absalom was riding his mule, the mule went under the thick branches of an oak tree. His head got caught in the tree while the mule kept on going. Joab, the commander of David’s men, took three javelins and plunged them into Absalom’s heart. Absalom was buried in the forest.

When David received the news about Absalom’s death he wept. He said, O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son (2 Samuel 18: 33).

    WHY DID ABSALOM KILL AMNON?

Amnon, son of David, fell in love with his half-sister, Tamar. So he devised a scheme and pretended to be ill. When David, his father, came to see him he asked him to send Tamar to make some special food for him. Tamar went and made the food for him but when she took the food to him, he grabbed and raped her.

This caused Absalom, Tamar’s brother, to hate Amnon, his half-brother. So he planned to kill him. Absalom urged his father to send all his brothers to a certain place. When they were there Absalom ordered his men, ‘Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Have not I given you this order? Be strong and brave.’ So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules and fled (2 Samuel 13: 28-29).

HOW DID DAVID SHOW KINDNESS TO MEPHIBOSHETH, THE SON OF JONATHAN AND GRANDSON OF KING SAUL?

David and Jonathan were very close friends. In fact, Jonathan protected David from his father, king Saul. Saul was desirous of killing David because he considered him a threat to his kingdom. But Saul was fighting against God in his desire to kill David. You would recall that Samuel, the prophet, anointed David as the future king of Israel because Saul had disobeyed God.

After David was anointed king over all Israel, he did what was just and right for all the people. David asked, Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake (2 Samuel 9: 1). David found out that Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, was alive and crippled in both feet.

David sent for him. When he arrived, David said to him, Don’t be afraid for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table (2 Samuel 9: 7).

David kept his promise. Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem with his family and servants.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN DAVID WISHED TO BUILD A PROPER DWELLING FOR THE ARK?

When David brought the ark to Jerusalem it was housed in a tent. So when David was settled in his palace after the Lord had granted him victories over all his enemies, he said to the prophet Nathan. Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent (2 Samuel 7: 2).

The prophet told David that he should do what he had in mind. But that very night God instructed Nathan to tell David that he was not the one to build a structure for the ark.

Nathan was given this message for David. Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says:  … When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. ...' (2 Samuel 7: 12-13).

WHAT WAS GOD’S PROMISE TO DAVID?

David committed adultery with Bathsheba and a son was born to them. The Lord struck the child and the child became ill and died.

But after this affair, David took Bathsheba to be his wife. From their marriage a son was born. They named him Solomon. The Lord loved him; and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah (2 Samuel 12: 24-25).

Jedidiah means loved by the Lord.

This was God’s promise to David concerning Solomon before the Bathsheba affair. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men (2 Samuel 7: 13-14).

HOW DID GOD PUNISH DAVID FOR HIS SINS CONCERNING BATHSHEBA AND URIAH?

David sinned against Bathsheba and Uriah as well as against God by committing adultery with Bathsheba and by having her husband killed in battle.

God sent the prophet Nathan to David to accuse him of his sin. Nathan told David a parable about a rich man and a poor man. The rich man had taken advantage of the poor man. The parable was to illustrate what David had done. But David was not aware that the prophet was speaking about him. As he was told the parable, David burned with anger. He said, As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die! He must pay for that lamb four time over, because he did such a thing and had no pity (2 Samuel 12: 5-6).

When the prophet told David that he was the man who took advantage, he was worried. After Nathan told David all that the Lord had done for him, he confessed. He said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord (2 Samuel 12: 13).

Nathan told David what his punishment would be as spoken by the Lord. … Now therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own (2 Samuel 12: 10).

The Lord also struck the child that Bathsheba had borne to David. The child became ill and died.

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT SOLOMON’S WISDOM?

We read in Scripture, God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the men of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than any other man, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Calcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. He described plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also taught about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. Men of all nations came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom (1 Kings 4: 29-34).

Solomon was visited by the queen of Sheba. When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relation to the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions (1 Kings 10: 1).

… she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her (1 Kings 10: 2-3).

She said to the king,The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king, to maintain justice and righteousness’ (1 King 10: 6-9).

King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart (1 Kings 10: 23-24).

WHY DID SOLOMON SERVE OTHER GODS?

God had warned the Israelites about intermarrying foreign women. But we learn from the Bible that Solomon loved many of them - Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. He was also married to Pharaoh’s daughter.

God said to the Israelites, You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods (1 Kings 11: 2). This was exactly what happened to Solomon.

Solomon had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines.

As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done (1 Kings 11: 4-6).

Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab and for Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods (1 Kings 11: 8).

HOW DID GOD SHOWER GRACE ON SOLOMON?

Solomon showed his love for the Lord by living according to the statutes of his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.

The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices for that was the most important high place. We are informed that Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

While he was at Gibeon, the Lord appeared to him during the night in a dream. God said to Solomon, Ask for whatever you want me to give you (1 Kings 3: 5).

Solomon answered, … So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours (1 Kings 3: 9).

God was pleased with Solomon’s response and said, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both riches and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life (1 Kings 3: 12-14).

DID GOD ESTABLISH SOLOMON’S ROYAL THRONE OVER ISRAEL UNCONDITIONALLY?

When Solomon was finished building the temple and the royal palace, the Lord appeared to him a second time.

God said to him, As for you, if you walk before me in integrity of heart and uprightness, as David your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws, I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel’ (1 King 9: 4-5).

God became angry with Solomon because Solomon had turned away from Him. Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command. So the Lord said to Solomon, ‘Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son (1 Kings 11: 10-12).

WHAT WAS DAVID’S CHARGE TO SOLOMON?

God said to David, Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father (1 Chronicles 28: 6).

David said to Solomon, So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever. And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a temple as a sanctuary. Be strong and do the work (1 Chronicles 28: 9-10).

    WHY DID GOD PUNISH ISRAEL?

Whenever Israel gained a victory it was not because of the strength of Israel’s army but because of God’s guidance and blessing. So the size of the army was not significant. Do you remember the victory that God brought about through Gideon with only three hundred men?

God did not want Israel to count its fighting men. But Satan incited David to take a census of Israel. So he instructed Joab and the commanders of the troops to count the Israelites.

In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah (1 Chronicles 21: 5).

But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the census because the king’s command was repulsive to him. This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel (1 Chronicles 21: 7).

FALSE TEACHING OF THE SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH

The Seventh Day Adventist Church teaches soul sleep, that is, the soul (spirit) remains in the grave until the resurrection.

The Bible teaches that the soul (spirit) when a person dies goes to heaven or hell (hades). The spirit of a believer goes to heaven (Phil.1:23, Luke 16:22; Eccl. 12:6-7; 1 Thess. 4: 13-14) and the spirit of an unbeliever goes to hell (hades) (Luke 16:23).

The Seventh Day Adventist Church observes the Sabbath.

The Sabbath law was given to the Israelites under the first covenant (Exod. 31:12-17) but the first covenant became obsolete (Heb. 8:7-13).

The Seventh Day Adventist Church teaches that after the judgment at the Second Coming of Jesus the earth will remain desolate for a thousand years.

The Bible teaches that God will create a new heaven and a new earth on the day of judgment (2 Pet. 3:3-13).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).
