WHAT WAS THE FIRST MIRACLE THROUGH WHICH GOD BEGAN TO EXALT JOSHUA?

Before the Israelites crossed the Jordan, God said to Joshua, ‘Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river’ (Joshua 3: 7-9).

Joshua said to the people, Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, the water flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap’ (Joshua 3: 12-13).

When the people were ready to cross the Jordan, the priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them.  As soon as their feet touched the edge of the water, the water that was coming down stopped flowing. Upstream some distance away the water piled up in a heap in a town called Adam. The water that was flowing  downstream to the Dead Sea was completely cut off. So the people were able to cross over the Jordan on dry ground.

WHAT DID RAHAB DO FOR THE ISRAELITES THAT BROUGHT BLESSINGS TO HER FAMILY AND HERSELF?

Before the Israelites crossed the Jordan, Joshua, the newly appointed leader, secretly sent two spies from Shittim to look over the land. He said, ‘Go, look over the land, especially Jericho' (Joshua 2: 1). The spies went and entered the house  of a prostitute and stayed there. Her name was Rahab.

The king of Jericho was told about the spies so he sent a message to Rahab. ‘Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land' (Joshua 2: 3).

But Rahab had hidden the men. She said to the messengers, ‘Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, the men left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them' (Joshua 2: 4-5).

But Rahab had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under stalks of flax that she had put on the roof. So the messengers went after the two spies.

After they left, Rahab went up on the roof and told the spies that she knew the Lord had given them the land and there was great fear among the inhabitants. She also mentioned to the spies that the people had heard about the miracles the Lord had performed for them.

She asked the spies to swear to her that they would show kindness to he family because of her kindness to them. They said to her, ‘If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land'  (Joshua 2: 14).

Rahab let the spies down by a rope through the window, since her house was part of the city wall. She asked the spies to go to the hills and hide themselves for three days until the messengers had returned. After three days they should go on their way.

The spies said that the oath they swore to her  would only be valid if she brought all her family into her house and tied a scarlet cord in the window through which they were let  down.

The spies kept their oath. Rahab and her family were safe when the Israelites possessed the land. Rahab through her marriage to an Israelite became the great grandmother of King David (Matt. 1: 5; Ruth 4: 18-21). As such, Rahab is listed in the ancestry of Jesus. What blessings!

WHY WAS MOSES REPLACED BY JOSHUA?

After the Israelites had traveled for some time they arrived in the Desert of Zin. Miriam died there and was buried. There was no water for the people and they gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.

Moses and Aaron appealed to God and He said to Moses,Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink (Num. 20: 7-8).

The whole Israelite community traveled from there to Mount Hor. There God said to Moses and Aaron, Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you

rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah (Num. 20: 24). Aaron died on the top of Mount Hor as God had informed them.

Moses spoke the following words to all Israel: I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’ The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. … Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their forefathers to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged’ (Deut. 31: 2-3, 7-8).

Because of disobedience Moses and Aaron did not enter the promised land.

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

WHAT WAS THE CONSEQUENCE OF OBEDIENCE AND DISOBEDIENCE WHEN THE ISRAELITES ENTERED THE PROMISED LAND?

God commanded Moses to say to the Israelites.

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Deut. 30: 15-20).

God allowed the Israelites to go into captivity, at the hands of unbelievers, because of disobedience. The northern tribes went into Assyrian captivity in 722 B.C. and Judah went into Babylonian captivity in 587/586 B.C.

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

WHAT WAS GOD’S PROMISE TO THE ISRAELITES WHEN THEY TURNED TO HIM IN THEIR CAPTIVITY?

When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come upon you and you take them to heart wherever the Lord your God disperses you among the nations, and when you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the Lord your God will gather you and bring you back. He will bring you to the land that belonged to your fathers, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live (Deut. 30: 1-6).

God brought the faithful Israelites back to the land as He had promised (Ezra, chapters 1 and 2).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

I’ve strayed, O Lord, and turned aside,

    I’ve disobeyed Your voice;

But now with contrite heart I turn

And make Your will my choice.  —D. De Haan

WHY DID THE ISRAELITES GO INTO CAPTIVITY?

The Israelites were told that they should obey all the laws that were given to them. Failure to do so would have serious consequences.

If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name—the Lord your God—the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. He will bring upon you all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law until you are destroyed. You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left but few in number, because you did not obey the Lord your God.  Just as it pleased the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess (Deut. 28: 58-63).

Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known (Deut. 28: 64).

As it turned out, the Israelites were disobedient. The northern tribes went into Assyrian captivity (722 B.C) and Judah went into Babylonian captivity (587/586 B.C).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

WHAT WAS GOD’S ASSURANCE TO THE ISRAELITES WHEN THEY WENT TO BATTLE?

The Israelites were told that they should not be afraid when they went to war and saw horses and chariots and an army greater than theirs because God will be with them.

The priest was responsible to address the army and say, ‘Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be faint-hearted or afraid; do not be terrified or give way to panic before them. For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you the victory’ (Deut. 20: 3-4).

WHO WAS THE PROPHET THAT MOSES REFERRED TO?

Moses encouraged the Israelites that when they entered the promised land they should not to learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. He said to them, Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God (Deut. 18: 10-13).

God said to Moses, I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account (Deut. 18: 18-19).

Who was that prophet? We read, For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs …  (Rom. 15: 8).

Jesus said, Don’t  you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work (John 14: 10

WHY DID GOD WANT TO DESTROY THE ISRAELITES?

God instructed Moses to come up Mount Sinai to receive the ten commandments. Moses remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights. While he was on the mountain he did not eat or drink. The Lord gave him two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On the tablets were the ten commandments.

God informed Moses that the people have become corrupt. They have turned away from what He commanded them by making a cast idol.

God said to Moses, I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they (Deut. 9: 13-14).

WHY DID GOD ALLOW THE ISRAELITES TO TAKE POSSESSION OF THE PROMISED LAND?

After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourselves, ‘The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.’ No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your forefathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people (Deut. 9: 4-6).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

WHY DID GOD CALL ABRAHAM? WHY DID GOD CHOOSE THE ISRAELITES?

God chose Abraham because he wanted a man who would believe him. Consider Abraham: ‘He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness’ (Gal. 3: 6).

The Israelites were the physical descendants of Abraham. Abraham’s grandson was Jacob whose name God changed to Israel (Gen. 35: 10). The twelve tribes of Israel were the descendants of the twelve sons of Jacob (Genesis 49).

Why did God choose the Israelites? The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands (Deut. 7: 7-9).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

HOW DID GOD REVEAL HIMSELF TO THE ISRAELITES?

    1)    God spoke to the people.

    2)    God took the people out of Egypt by means of miracles through his great power.

    3)    God manifested himself in the pillar of cloud.

    4)    God manifested himself in the pillar of fire.

Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created man on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? Has any other people heard the voice of God speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by miraculous signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other. From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. Because he loved your forefathers and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today.

Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other (Deut. 4: 32-39).

God has a plan for your life. Surrender your life to him and trust him fully. God will accomplish his plan for your life. If you are not a born again believer, receive Jesus and become a child of God (John 1: 12; Rom. 10: 9-10).

        Give Him first place in your heart;

Give Him first place in your service,
