Luke 6
Luke 6
A disciple even loves his enemies.
27“But I say to you
who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who
curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29“Whoever hits you
on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do
not withhold your shirt from him either. 30“Give to everyone
who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back
(NASB)
A disciple treats
others the way that he wants to be treated.
31“Treat others the
same way you want them to treat you. 32“If you love those who love you, what credit is
that to
you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33“If you do good to
those who do good to you, what credit is that to
you? For even sinners do the same. 34“If you lend to
those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners
in order to receive back the same amount. 35“But love your
enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward
will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to
ungrateful and evil men. 36“Be merciful, just
as your Father is merciful. (NASB)
A disciple does not
judge and condemn others instead he instead he forgives others.
37“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you
will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed
down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the
measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
39He also told them a
parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is
fully trained will be like his teacher. 41Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but
do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out
the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in
your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then
you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
(ESV)
A
disciple is a person who has made Christ his Lord and obeys Him and his life is
built on the foundation of Christ the Rock.
46“Why do you call me ‘Lord,
Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47Everyone who comes to me and
hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48he is like a man building a
house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood
arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it
had been well built. 49But the one who hears and does
not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.
When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that
house was great.” (ESV)

Mark 10
Mark 10
A disciple honors marriage how God has defined it.
2Some Pharisees
came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful
for a man to divorce a wife. 3And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command
you?” 4They said, “Moses permitted a man TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY.” 5But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of
heart he wrote you this commandment. 6“But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. 7“FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, 8AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer
two, but one flesh. 9“What therefore God has joined together, let no man
separate.”
10In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again. 11And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and
marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12and if she herself divorces her husband and marries
another man, she is committing adultery.” (NASB)
A disciple doesn’t let anything hold him back from
following Christ.
17As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him
and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit
eternal life?” 18And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one
is good except God alone.19“You know the commandments, ‘DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL,
DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.’” 20And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these
things from my youth up.”21Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to
him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving,
for he was one who owned much property.
23And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, “How
hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!” 24The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus
answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom
of God! 25“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26They were even more astonished and said to Him, “Then who
can be saved?” 27Looking at them, Jesus said, “With people it is
impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”
28Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left
everything and followed You.” 29Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has
left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for
My sake and for the gospel’s sake,30but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in
the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and
farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life. 31“But many who
are first will be last, and
the last, first.” (NASB)
A disciple is a servant.
42Calling them to
Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers
of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over
them. 43“But it is not this
way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your
servant; 44and whoever wishes
to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45“For even the Son
of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom
for many.” (NASB)

Mark 9
Mark 9
A disciple is a servant.
35Sitting down, He
called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be
last of all and servant of all.” (NASB)
A disciple does not
cause others to sin.
42“Whoever causes one
of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if,
with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea.
(NASB)
A disciple puts
whatever in his life that causes him to sin out of his life.
43“If your hand
causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled,
than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, 44[where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND
THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.] 45“If your foot
causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame,
than, having your two feet, to be cast into hell, 46[where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND
THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.] 47“If your eye causes
you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God
with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell, 48where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED. (NASB)

Matthew 25
Matthew 25
A disciple is alert and is ready for the coming of
the Lord.
1“Then the kingdom
of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out
to meet the bridegroom.2“Five of them were
foolish, and five were prudent. 3“For when the
foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4but the prudent
took oil in flasks along with their lamps. 5“Now while the
bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. 6“But at midnight
there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7“Then all those
virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8“The foolish said
to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9“But the prudent
answered, ‘No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ 10“And while they
were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were
ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. 11“Later the other
virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open up for us.’ 12“But he answered,
‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13“Be on the alert then,
for you do not know the day nor the hour. (NASB)
A disciple uses all
that God has given him to do God’s will and bring glory to God.
14“For it will be like a man
going on a journey, who called his servantsand entrusted to them his property. 15To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each
according to his ability. Then he went away. 16He who had received the five
talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17So also he who had the two
talents made two talents more. 18But he who had received the
one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19Now after a long time the
master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20And he who had received the
five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you
delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ 21His master said to him, ‘Well
done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will
set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22And he also who had the two
talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I
have made two talents more.’ 23His master said to him, ‘Well
done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will
set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24He also who had received the
one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping
where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25so I was afraid, and I went
and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ 26But his master answered him,
‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown
and gather where I scattered no seed? 27Then you ought to have
invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received
what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him
and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29For to everyone who has will
more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not,
even what he has will be taken away.30And cast the worthless servant
into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.’ (ESV)
