Personally, I have always had problems with that one. First, I'm not comfortable with claiming things out of context. Second, I read it as a not particularly sound prayer that God answered anyway, because of His grace on someone who didn't know better.
But I guess it made a good little book.

Bruce Wilkerson has a good little book on this one called "The Prayer of Jabez." I think that is what Jon is refering to. I think that taking it in context, you notice that it falls out of the norm, and that alone bears it special attention. So in this case the in context leads us to take and examine it on its own. Just my opinion.

Who was he? I don't know.

Maybe he was put in there for someone like Bruce Wilkinson to point out to the rest of us that we should all be asking for more territory so as to make known the Good News to more people?

To be put onto the list of "Things to ask God one day"

I kind of agree with the comments already made.. The Prayer Of Jabez kind of falls into the prosperity gospel that is so popular today and the real danger to me is the false connotations that have been taken by people who have read the book..

It is ok to ask God to expand our territories when it comes to walking with Him but to expect Him to bless us because we ask Him to as we want to be blessed is making God this cosmic Santa Claus which He is NOT.

I personally think this short inclusion has been glroified and popularized to feed the greed of a lot of folks.

We dont know anything about this guy as has already been stated.

Well Ross, trust you to come up with this one! Fragmentary genealogies of Judah, is what it says in my commentary on 1 Chron. Was looked on as a person having almost magical powers. His faith was triumphant over his name.
Just another bit of local history as recorded in the Chronichles of Judah
