My husband and I lived in a farming district in Zimbabwe where we thought we would retire - the school was set in a game farm with a small dam stocked with fish where we spent many happy hours with our two sons.
Then things collapsed politically. Farmers were chased off their farms by mobs using intimidation and violence. They lost all they had worked and planned for and had to start again, many in foreign countries. Workable for younger peolple but difficult for retired folk who, as you say, no longer have the same reserves of resilience or energy.
My family had to evacuate twice for a period of weeks. Each time we mentally said goodbye to all our things as there was the possibility that in our absence our home would be trashed. We learnt to put a low value on things, and a high value on the safety of our family members and the wonderful friendships that we had.
Fortunately we never lost our goods, but many of our friends did. We now live in Zambia with no certain plans for the future but a sure knowledge that God is with us and all is well, and somehow, all will be well too.
