I don't have a problem with the death penalty 'per se'. After all, the verse you quoted (and many others) support the idea that the state has the right and responsibility to punish murderers.
HOWEVER ... I don't believe Scripture teaches that we should lock people up for decades, while they await their punishment. Nor do I believe Scripture teaches that people should be convicted without eyewitness testimony. In fact God requires at least two witnesses.
I'd rather see some guilty go free than see "innocents" punished. Though I admit that endangers our unarmed populace. But I consider that part of the price we pay for being free from wrongful punishment. And if we arm ourselves, we can still protect our loved ones.
