I sincerely think that this test was for Abraham and us, not for God, as the text may seem to imply here to some of us.
"...for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."
That seems to imply that He (God) did not know that beforehand about Abraham, doesn't it? I take the boy's name and I laugh with God myself! How foolish we can be! Abraham had a choice, but God knew his heart better than Abraham himself knew.
22Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." 23Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"John 21:22-24 (NIV)
Our understanding is always tested. If we try to see it in our own understanding, we will fail a lot more than we have to!
