First of all, pragmatic advice. When putting in html tags, you need to edit again, and after doing so, it seems to interprete the tags and take them from being visible.
Step by step:
1.) Post your message with html tags.
2.) After saving the post, hit the edit edit button for that post.
3.) When it comes up in the edit mode, (making sure you are in html mode and not text mode) hit the Save Message button at the bottom.
It is quite alright to delete this comment. I just mean it to help you post what you seem to want to do with the formatting...

I agree with you right down the line on this one. However, I would ask for practical guidance as well as identifying the problem. We may not agree on the severity of certain aspects of this problem, but I think it is there just as you say. What do you see in a practical way for the average person to seek to get to an acceptable solution?
Oh, and as a side note, the word is 'Feldercarb'. (heh)
