Do not let the language fool you... God does NOT want us to fear Him as you feared the devil. Fear of the Lord has nothing to do with "afraid" with the possible exception related to His judgment or correcting Hand...

When God tells us that the "fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" we could better use words like "faith in the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" or "our relationship with the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" or a little more literal rendition might be, "reverence for the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."

God does not want you and me as His children to fear Him as in being afraid. He wants us to revere Him and honor Him in our decisions one decision at a time... because how I live my life says more about my faith in Him than anything else that I can do.

Teri, did you have a monster under your bed when you were little? That's cute. I would say for sure fear the Lord if He is not with you.On your own you would end up in a world of hurt
    Be blessed

Bob, the language did not fool me. The point was and is that I should have been taught to fear the Lord above the devil. And if God is not my personal God, I should fear Him...I should be afraid of Him.

Amen sis! The devil gets more credit sometimes than he is due! God is all-powerful over every evil he can try to inflict. We merely need to call out the Name of Jesus and the devil has no power at all.
(PS..my mother was a horror show fanatic so, I had more visions of what the devil looked like in my head, than any child should. If only I had twice as many beautiful images of Jesus in my head instead).

    Hi Teri,

I agree with Bob, it's a different "fear"

    God Bless You!

These words are mine & are not definitive! Words & their evolving usage really attract me. I find that being full of AWE is AWFUL, yet it has come to mean something that is not good, something that is worse than third rate. So it is with fear of the Lord, a reverent, respectful fear is how we should take it, not as in being afraid. It is worth remembering however that the Lord can take away, not just life in this world, but life with him in eternity! The youth today, here in the UK, talk of things being Awesome, I think that it is being used in the manner that its meant to be, Some AWE, some fear, some respect, some reverence. Words do evolve & original meanings are lost in the passage of time, I find it fascinating. In retirement I have time to think on different things. Some would tell me to get a life!!!

I do not mean to sound pompous, but the words of scripture must be seen in the day of being written as to what the world perceives their meaning today. Hence updated translations of the ORIGINAL texts.
Hope this sheds a little light on the subject. of fear as used in scriprures towards wisdom I think Bob has it right.
    Is Not GOD'S word Awesome
    Love in His Name Stuart
