I would say the message, but this is somehwat of a loaded question there dear sister. I'd rather ask, who is causing whom to stumble and how? Or, whos faith is strong, and who should bear their weaker brethren? Or, who should not be passing on judgement on matters of faith?

I know this is serious business for you. I'd advise taking a step back and asking the Lord what is plesing to him in this. It may be that making the service more comfortable is what he desires. It may be the passion of these young upstarts is the flame he wishes to fan. I cannot say one way or the other. However, you who are there certainly do have scriptural references to deal with these things. If the majority of the congregation is stronger in their faith than these exhuberant and maybe somewhat disrespectful youths, what should their response be? I see an opportunity for the speaker in the pulpit to address this straight on. If people were to seek another body to gather with because of this, what does it say about the true basis of their faith?

I suspect that the true solution is in a compromise along the lines of some of their musical desires and expressions and some of the more traditional in the view of the general body.

And since we could sing of God's Glory without the need for words, maybe the music and the passion within is just as important.

This is indeed a struggle, I'd say.

My advice would be to have everyone read Romans 14 and on and ask themselves: "who am I in this context, and what is my responsibility to the Lord, for the sake of my brother's and sisters in this?" Maybe then the answer will be clear.

    In Christ,

I think Music is pretty-much neutral if it contains a godly message. It all seems a matter of personal taste as opposed to right and wrong. I think people tend to like whatever they grew up around and with, which would make for musical generation gaps, especially when a church is reluctant to incorporate new styles of music as they come along.

Maybe a happy compromise of both styles would be acceptable as long as the words were pre-printed out on sheets and handed out to the congregation ahead of time or shown on a screen.

New songs have to be introduced and taught to a congregation not familiar with them and eventually they will build a list of current songs which will become known favorites over time. That should also help to close the generation gap by making the younger crowd feel welcomed while still maintaining the favorites of the older generation.

    Blessings!

Just a reminder-you should be pleased that you can even ask these questions. In our church we're lucky to even sneak in a chorus from the 80's once in a while.

I think Mel answered it best. Although the truth is compromise worship styles usually means no one is happy.

Its important that everyone remember Who they are worshiping. Its crazy to walk away from adoring and praising someone thinking about how it felt for you. Matt Redmon's "Heart of Worship" says it well.
    When the music fades
    And all is stripped away
    And I simply come
    Longing just to bring
    Something that's of worth
    That will bless your heart

I'll bring You more than a song
    For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
    You search much deeper within
    Through the ways things appear
    You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
    And it's all about You
    All about You, Jesus
I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it
    When it's all about You
    It's all about You Jesus

    King of endless worth
    No one could express
    How much You deserve
    Though I'm weak and poor
    All I have is Yours
    Every single breath

I too like Mel's comments. People do not sit well with change... kind of ironic isnt it!

I would not like to hear Amazing Grace changed at all... and some of the older songs that we sing dont convey much of a message because the words we use today do not fit the words they used back then.

I think we need to keep looking for new ways to change the means without changing the message... we need to adapt... to some degree...

Now there is also the idea in the scriptures that we are to be a seperate people.... different from the world.. but we also have to keep in mind... even Amazing Grace was a new song to someone at one time...

Make things a patter of prayer and then mix some new in with the old and I am confident that people will adapt and the Lord will be blessed!
