Hi Eve. And Yes it was.
Your experience is your own, and not far from what most of have had here or there at times.
Disicpline comes from without if not from within. If I follow my own wisdom (disregarding God's) I follow a fool! There is even another subtle point beyond that: Follow others at your own peril! Not to say not to follow others, but be willing to examine even what the Apostle Paul would say. Being willing to examine what he says against God's Word is a good thing. Paul himself commended those who did this.
So when you see a self help book here or there, or you get what sounds like good advice from a loving brother or sister, do you bounce it up against the ultimate self help book?
I fail in this so often, it is sad. But I get up and learn again. (hopefully I am not too pig headed to teach eventually, LOL)
I give you one further scripture:
1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
1 John 4:1-3 (New International Version)
I think a key in understanding this verse is that you cannot acknowledge Jesus in Truth if you reject his Word. To Call him Lord but refuse to Accept God's Word as truth is at best an empty testimony and lacks what is needed to be a true testimony. I think we all fail here in ther in this, so I do not say to judge yourself as anything other than the way a doctor would, a sick person needing healing here and there.
