Good post, Marsha. There are so many messages you could preach/teach in that one short passage; don't get me started, or I'll be here all day expounding! :-)

One tidbit, though: Did you know that when someone was invited up to read a portion of the Torah or Tanakh in synagogue, they didn't choose what was read? According to the teachings I've heard on this, the man was handed a scroll, which he then read and gave back, just as Jesus did in this passage.

Do you get the importance of that? We're used to our pastors bringing forth a message that they chose and researched. Even in churches where the readings are scheduled according to a liturgical calendar, the pastor/priest usually still has some control over his sermon/homily/message.

In those days in the synagogue, that wasn't the case. Jesus didn't go up there and say, "Hand me the portion of Isaiah where it talks about the lame walking and captives going free; I want to read and discuss that part today." It was given to him to read, because God the Father wanted Jesus to be able to read that scroll and make that declaration that day in that town. As my pastor would say, the whole incident was "a God thing."

That's all I'll say about it, or I'll end up preaching a sermon on the matter. :-)

    Thanks for the post, Marsha!

I think it is true a man cannot be a prophet in his own town, people who know me rememberwhat I was as a young man, not a man called by God. In Scotland we have a saying, "I kent his Faither". I remember him & who he is.

I agree, Stuart; that's why we often find it hard to witness within our own family. They know what we were like "B.C." and they tend to be skeptical of our conversion.

Then, once they accept the conversion, they buttonhole us as "the religious one" in the family, and every Christian thing that crosses their path ends up being given to us. I say that because my brother just walked in and handed me a two-CD set he received while in Atlanta last weekend. He only knew it was a Christian thing; he didn't know that Promise Keepers is a men's ministry. I told him I'll pass it along to one of the guys at church, since I'm husbandless.

So, we have to pray for God to send workers across our family members' path to witness to them. Obviously, God answers those prayers; otherwise, I wouldn't have received this Promise Keepers CD set. We also have to pray that our family members' eyes, ears and hearts will be open to receive the Gospel message from those workers they encounter.

Marsha, I'm not sure I can remember what that sermon would say; otherwise I'd have at it. If I remember, I'll come back and post it. :-)
