Hi Stuart, Yes, there's POWER in simplicity, that's why I try to keep it simple. Thank you for your post. God Bless You.

Simple is often best. Why then do I search for the deeper meanings? Hmmm...

you know I'm finding if I skip the commentaries I spend so much time in and focus on what the scripture says It is much easier to understand the more I rely on other men or even myself the more the possibility of getting it all messed up. The studies are however going well. By the way Stuart how are you?

Thanks one & all, yes it is so simple, BUT!!!
Ross it is good to study, getting the background to events & history gives us a greater understanding of why certain things were done as they are. The background to complaints received by Paul from Corinth, led to the Cornithian letter. for example.
The exegesis of a passage gives the overview, often enlightening us in easier understanding of scriptures.
Keep up the good work, learning is not often easy, but it can be fun
    Love in His Name Stuart

Iread commentaries also, but get more insight from the Bible. We have to remember that the histories were written by man they are not God breathed so there may be inconsistanies in them. We know if we ask God for understanding He will provide t. God bless you.

I agree Pam, but there are many passages which can be understood better, with the background being known. To fully understand what Jesus said is easier if your background is 1st. Century & is centered in the country of origin. Therefore get reading about the history of the land & the peoples. The knowledge of the topography makes it easier to understand why "A man went DOWN from Jerusalem to Jericho"
Not to mislead the disciple, but to enhance knowledge, the average person living in the Holy land at that time would have taken all these things for granted.
Please do not get caught up in the debate of scripture versus commentary. It is totally misleading & does no justice to those who dedicated Christians who take time to write, that the bible might be understood more easier. It is not a watering down of the Word of God.

Though I currently am struggling with commentaries I still find them to be important because unless i see what others have taken th scriptures to say I can't really apply my learning to them with full truthfulness. yes they cause me to look into what I believe but unless I do that am I giving the scriptures a real chance
    Discern the truth
