    Proverbs 8 (NIV) (read the whole of it)
    1 Does not wisdom call out?
    Does not understanding raise her voice?
    2 On the heights along the way,
    where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

    3 beside the gates leading into the city,
    at the entrances, she cries aloud:

    For those worried about the femminine reference, read this whole chapter and tell me who wisdom is?

    Morning Jon,
    I too am reading this particular chapter in my quiet time, God equates our wandering away from Him as divorce, see Mal. 2:16. I think the family is a great way to illustrate how we are to regard out relationship with God. Are we not Brothers & Sisters in Christ?
    The bride of Christ is God's way of reminding us that we ARE family & should behave as such!

    Mel, there long has been a school of thought that thinks God is Female as in "Mother God". This because wisdom, "GK 'sophia', is female". The Septaguant, that part of the OT was translated from Hebrew to Greek in Alexandria Circa:285 - 247 BC
    Wisdom is a female word.
    Hope this helps
    Love in His Name Stuart

    Good Question! What kind of bride are we? The day will reveal it.

    A thought-provoking post, Jon. Your comment about men being offended by the term "bride of Christ" reminded me of an incident that occurred in a church I attended several years ago. Our pastor was preaching on this very passage, and he mentioned that just as women in the body of Christ are part of that group called "kings and priests" (or "a kingdom of priests," depending on the version you were reading), so also are men in the body of Christ part of the bride of Christ. A man actually walked out at this point in the message, muttering something to the effect of, "I ain't listenin' to this! I ain't no bride!"

    As for the rest of your comments, I heartily agree that we need to think more about what kind of bride we're making ourselves ready to be, and less about what our Bridegroom can do for us or how many jewels might be sewn onto our wedding dress.

    As a single, never-married woman "of a certain age," I can tell you that I find myself praying often that the Lord will prepare me to be the kind of bride who will be a blessing to my earthly husband when we finally meet. Sometimes I wonder if I'll make a decent wife, having lived my entire adult life as a single woman.

    I used to have all these elaborate plans about where I wanted to be married, what color scheme I wanted, what food I'd have at the reception. The longer I remain unmarried, the less all those trappings matter to me. Now, I just want to meet the man God has for me, get to know him, and marry him. Who cares about the wedding? It's the marriage that counts.
