You wonder if Peter was trying to impress Jesus by showing off how much faith he had, but it's not so much about how much faith we have, but who we have faith in that is important. We need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

As long as Peter kept his eyes on the Lord he was ok... when he looked at the waves he began to sink and all he had to do was look back at Jesus! Peter found himself away from the Lord again outside teh courtyard when he denied Jesus... maybe there is a lesson here for us all!
